A bondage rigger is a person of any gender who practices the art of tying bondage , usually with rope.

Bondage riggers may participate in bondage for many reasons. These may include: as a form of BDSM or D/s play for personal enjoyment; as an art form, such as with Shibari or kinbaku ; or as an enterprise for profit, by selling books, videos, or photographs.

Bondage riggers work with one or more rope bottoms or bondage models , or may tie themselves in a practice called self-rigging or self-suspension . Some rope bottoms and bondage models are bondage riggers themselves.

Responsible bondage riggers always follow the principles of risk-aware consensual kink (RACK) when rigging. [ citation needed ]

Honestly, when you’re just starting to explore the wide world of BDSM, the sheer volume of options, terms, etiquette and BDSM gear can seem a little intimidating. That’s okay! You don’t need to (and can’t possibly!) know everything all at once. Take your time, explore, do some research and really try and understand why people like BDSM .
A great way to satisfy your curiosity about all things bondage is to read through reviews, articles and blog posts written by people who have been in and around the BDSM scene for a long while. Maybe you’ve done just that! If so, you may have come across the word ‘rigger’ and wondered what, exactly, a BDSM rigger is.
Wonder no more! We’re here to answer at least one of your questions about bondage play, and that’s: ‘what’s a rigger in BDSM?’ Once you have all the info, you can move on to deciding if it’s something you and your partner might be into trying when the mood strikes. No muss, no fuss!
Okay, let’s dive right in. From brat BDSM to primal BDSM , there are many types of roles in the BDSM community. But what is a BDSM rigger you ask? Simply put, a BDSM rigger is someone who enjoys tying rope as part of a BDSM scene. The term originates from sailing, and it’s in reference to the rigging (ropes) of ships and boats. Sailors have to learn a lot of complicated knots, and BDSM riggers do, too, if they want to keep practicing and perfecting their art.
Generally, rigging involves tying up a partner, but there are self-riggers, or people who practice self bondage as well. It’s more challenging to tie yourself up, especially in suspension-based rigging (when the person being tied up is ultimately hanging from the ceiling or a hook), but dedicated riggers have figured out all kinds of ways to satisfy their rope cravings.
There are some major myths about riggers in BDSM. For instance, people may assume that riggers must always be, or want to be, the dominant partner in a scene, that the best rigs are suspension-based, or that riggers have to ‘do all of the work’ by tying super complicated knots. Luckily, none of these are necessarily true. Anyone can be a rigger and use their tying skills when they’re with a partner. Simply put- anyone who enjoys the art form can be a rigger or a rope bunny.
Using rope in BDSM can be as simple as restricting some movement by fashioning a leash for your partner to something complex like a full-body harness. The experience that many riggers have when they’re tying translates to erotic thrills for both their partners. As a rigger becomes more skilled with their medium, they can move between knots and usages of rope as they and their partner decide is best. Just remember to always have a clear safe word, and to honor it at all times.
Just because you’re the one tying the knots doesn’t mean you have to be the dom. The dominant partner doesn’t have to lift a finger as long as they can still command you. While many doms enjoy manhandling their partners, others prefer to relax and let their subs gaze at them or fulfill their needs with just words to guide them.
If your dom looks especially alluring with ropes, they may command you to tie them up and then satisfy them or yourself while they watch to ensure that you follow their rules. There can be something very sexy about waiting on someone else hand and foot, especially when they couldn’t do anything even if they wanted to.
Just make sure to tie them down comfortably if you’re planning on playing for a while.
It might surprise you to learn that not all rigging in BDSM is sexual. In fact, not all of BDSM is sexual either. For many, the process of being tied down or up in various ways is inherently arousing and can lead to some pretty steamy scenes. However, some people enjoy the feel of the rope in their hands and perfecting knots for aesthetic pleasure, and it isn’t sexual at all for them.
Some riggers showcase their work at BDSM conventions or classes, and you can get a sense of the artistry involved. Plus, many of them are willing to teach you their methods, so you too can learn how to tie yourself or your partner like a true artist.
It’s always important to monitor your partner whenever you use a rope for rope bondage to ensure that they are getting proper circulation to any parts that are tied and that their airway is clear. Stay in constant communication with your partner to make sure that everyone is enjoying themselves.

My boyfriend and I got into BDSM by accident a few years back. We were fooling around in bed when he tied me up with a t-shirt that I’ve previously taken off. It was spontaneous and a bit awkward at first, but since I trusted him, I decided to go with the flow.
As soon as he put my tied up hands above my head, I knew that he had opened a whole new world of possibilities.
Being inexperienced as we were, that was the only thing we did that day, but we were eager to know more. Since it was a couple of years back, we couldn’t find any good beginner guides to BDSM and we had to learn by practicing on each other.
That is why I’ve come up with this beginner-friendly guide that will tell you all you need to know for your first BDSM experience. Whether you are a beginner or a BDSM veteran, I think you will find something for yourself in this complete guide for starting your own BDSM adventures.-
Using rope during sex is a form of dominance. If you are the dominant one in a relationship, you will enjoy tying up your partner and doing with them as you please. If you are, by chance, on the other side of the spectrum, the feeling of restraint and loss of control will take you to new heights in pleasure.
I say spectrum because there are people who enjoy it both ways or don’t enjoy it at all. BDSM as we know it today, derived from the Japanese bondage art form of shibari. The western approach is more about restraining, but the Japanese focus more on the artistic side of the process.
⦁ The price – let’s face it, this has crossed every mind that wanted to get into bondage. Is it expensive? Well, it is and it isn’t. If you go to a verified sex shop you could end up spending much more than you need to. Usually, a good hardware store has the things you need for a starting kit.
⦁ The diameter – the diameter of the rope is very important. You do not want a small diameter rope, as it can lead to injuries such as skin burns, circulation problems, bruises or even scars. By small diameter, I mean anything below 5mm.
⦁ The braiding – braiding affects how tight or loose your knots get, and how difficult it will be to get them untied. It is not imperative since you can always cut the rope, but that can lead to more expenses – the remains might not be long enough for further use.
⦁ The tooth – the tooth of a rope refers to its friction, and therefore affects how well your knots will hold.
⦁ Cutting – don’t be afraid to cut your rope into smaller pieces. Usually, you will find long sets of ropes so you will have to cut them up to fill your needs.
⦁ Maintenance – every tool needs to be maintained and ropes are no exception. Try to wash it when necessary and keep it in a bag or case so it won’t get damaged. Trim loose fibers and break the rope down in the water before using it if it gets too stiff.
⦁ Fixing loose ends – try to use up all the rope when tying and if u can’t, just tuck it under another line of rope. This will prevent loose ends and make it more appealing to the eyes.
⦁ Try to relax – there is no right or wrong when doing BDSM. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your partner and find out what works best for you. Just keep an eye out for safety measures, which I will discuss later in this thread.
There are many types of bondage ropes, but mostly they are separated into two categories – Natural and Synthetic. Both sorts have their advantages and drawbacks and it all comes down to your personal preference.
HEMP – hemp is commonly used for Shibari and it is very traditional. It has a natural look, fantastic tooth, a variety of diameter ranges and lots of colors. It isn’t stretchy as some other types. Drawbacks are that washing it affects the durability, it will shed fibers and could cause allergic reactions. Hemp also needs a lot of work to break in, as it can be quite stiff before first use and is expensive both raw and treated.
JUTE – jute, like hemp, is also traditional and usually used for Shibari. It is more expensive though, washing or boiling it degrades fibers, and needs more time to break in. Jute is a bit slower to tie with because of the tooth and needs care and inspection. The upside of jute is that quality improves with every use, it has a natural smell, can be dyed in any color, and is easy to unknot.
COTTON – Cotton is a great material for ropes. It is strong but soft on the skin, has acceptable tooth and slight elasticity, which can have benefits. Cotton ropes are lightweight, leave no allergic reactions and almost no rope burns. It can be dyed in different colors. The downsides of cotton ropes are that they are easy to get dirty, can stretch over time and need working in after washing. Also, knots get very tight, so I would not recommend it to beginners.
SILK – Silk is similar to cotton in some ways, but better. It’s flexible and soft with moderate friction. Has a low stretch, okay durability and good tooth despite being soft. But, as you may have guessed, it is quite expensive.
LINEN/FLAX – linen rope is expensive and harder to clean, but that are pretty much the only cons. On the other side, it has a good tooth (which makes it easier to tie), good strength, flexibility, and moderate durability. It doesn’t need to be worked in before use, has no allergy problems, but be careful as it still can leave some marks.
BAMBOO – like silk, it is in the luxury range of ropes, so it can cost a bit more money, but it is definitely worth it. Flexible and soft with low stretch and moderate friction, the bamboo rope is one of the finest you can use. It has okay durability, less grip than silk and anti-bacterial properties.
MANILA, SISAL, COIR – last of the natural kind, and in my opinion the least. They are quite uncomfortable, less stable, and don’t have enough strength for suspension. Not easy to clean, with limited diameters. Pros are that it is cheaper than bamboo and silk ones, leaves better “rope marks” and has a harsh tooth which can be good or bad depending on your preferences.
NYLON, PARACORD, POLYESTER – mostly referred to as nylon rope, it is smooth and soft, easy to find and clean, great durability with no allergies. Cons of this kind of rope are that it is slippery, has a bad tooth, knots are pretty compact and rope burns are much more prominent. It is a non-traditional type of rope.
SYNTHETIC HEMP – synthetic hemp is similar to natural, as it sheds and doesn’t have color options. Not many diameters either, but it is cheaper and easier to keep clean. Other pros are that it has a good tooth, knots don’t get very compact, supports suspension and since it’s synthetic leaves no allergies.
MFP Multifilament Polypropylene – advantages of this kind of rope include: low friction, decent strength, softness and smoothness, easy to find, no allergies and lots of colors. Drawbacks are not so good tooth, no suitable for suspension and more rope burns.
After trying various types, I have to say that this bondage rope is my all-time favorite. It’s ideal for the sensational feel of rope against my skin. The bondage rope is 10 meters long and allows for a wide variety of knots and positions. I would recommend it to beginners and experts alike. You can check it out at this link.
My first time using rope in BDSM was shortly after the t-shirt “accident”. My boyfriend and I started going around the shops and asking all sorts of questions, to get more information on what we need and want.
We stumbled upon a hardware shop and went in. There was a wall full of different kinds of ropes and we started feeling and stretching one after another. When we settled for the one that was right for us we hurried back home.
It was a Saturday so we had all the time we wanted to experiment and try different things. After the t-shirt, the rope felt kinda weird on my skin at the start, but as my boyfriend continued to make loops and ties all over my body, I started to relax and enjoy.
After hours and hours of experimenting, I was aroused to the point of bursting. Every touch on my skin I felt with such intensity that I could orgasm at any moment. And I did. That was the first time I used a rope in BDSM, and I am hooked ever since.
Even though Bondage Boutique Soft Bondage Rope is my favorite, there are plenty that are pretty equal and comparable with that one. I will list a few in case you need some directions.
“I’d be more than happy to demonstrate what I can do with a rope.” ahh, the famous line in the movie from which this twin set of ropes comes. These particular ropes are made from triple-twisted silk and feature no elasticity, making it excellent for strong and safe restraint.
Coming in with two colors (red and black) and 2×5 meter silky, strong bondage, they guarantee progress in the seasoned bondage players BDSM fantasies. They are suitable for wrist and ankle restraint or fore more complicated full-body bondage and can be used by beginners or experts alike.
Fifty Shades Freed Want to Play? This silky rope is what every kinky girl needs in her arsenal. Like the one before, this one is also made from the triple-twisted finish of silky goodness. All you have to do is unwind it and it is ready to be used in any way you wish and on anyone you desire.
This extra-long exquisite piece of rope is excellent for artistic designs and full-body bondage. The soft and shiny finish feels great on your skin and looks even better with rose-gold metal tips at the ends. Perfect for beginners or advanced users.
Doc Johnson Japanese-style bondage rope is a bit cheaper than previous ones, but don’t let that distract you from the truth – it is as good as they get in the cotton department.
With 10 meters in length and fabric that is woven to lay flat against the skin, it is perfect for elaborate knots and various BDSM positions.
The soft finish makes it delicate for your skin and has almost no rope burn. You can use to tie wrists and ankles or make a beautiful body harness for your significant other, just make sure you have scissors near you if the knots get a bit tight. It is machine washable and usable for countless times. Give it a go!
There is not much I can write that will make you understand the intricacies involved in BDSM bondage without getting complicated. Luckily, we have lots of videos with tutorials for beginners and advanced users.
Here are some of the best video tutorials about different ways you can use bondage rope.
Update: YouTube age-restricted the videos, so you have to login to YouTube and then you can watch them all, if you’re already logged in this shouldn’t matter to you.
This is a basic show and tell tutorial about lots of different toys you can use. It is presented by a cute BDSM couple.
This guy is a bit awkward but knows his stuff. He is mostly showing full-body bondage but will explain any knot you want, just leave it as a comment. This is also some of his work
This is one of my favorite guides, it’s so simple and so effective, it also feels amazing if you use silky rope.
Once the above is complete you can move on to the more advanced bondage rope tutorials.
It takes a while to master the below, so go easy and remember that practice makes perfect.
This is amazing if you enjoy being suspended, it’s also amazing if you enjoy giving your partner full control of your cock/pussy.
Mix this with a good hand restraint and a magic wand and you have some of the best sex of your life.
This Hishi is such a seductive, beautiful restraint, once it’s masted it feels like bliss, the control you give up to your partner and the feeling of the rope against the skin is bliss.
Presented by the same guy from one of the previous vids, these are still pretty vanilla in my opinion but as youtube policy dictates, there can be no wild content. Feel free to investigate on your own.
This is a must-read, the above is all about techniques, this part is just about fun.
It’s how I took my rope skills to the next level of pleasure.
try to mix things up by restraining your partner to a chair, bed, a sturdy pole or anything that catches your attention and has the ability to hold a rope. But keep in mind that safety is first.
for this you will need some extra equipment (hooks, or poles with rings hanging from the ceiling) but it can be a lot of fun when done properly. Not everything has to be played out in bed.
you can use a rope with this Magic Wand Vibrator and have lots of fun! Tie a knot around yours
