Here a Rigger (me) has tied his sub with a Shinju chest harness. This rope bondage pattern can be used in suspension, but I like it as a decorative piece. Add a collar and lead and you’ve got a great kinky party outfit!

The Hog Tie is a classic tie for a Rigger to learn. The Rope Bottom (and sub in this case) is restrained face down with ankles and wrists tied to a chest harness. It’s a great tie for discipline themed scenes, or for having her lie on a bed for forced oral (consensual non-consent style)

A Rigger is a BDSM term used to describe someone who enjoys restraining their partner with rope bondage (sometimes referred to as Shibari or Kinbachu). This might be for sexual stimulation, performance art, to help the Rope Bottom relax, or just as a hobby.
The counterpart to a Rigger is a Rope Bunny (who enjoys being tied up).
A Rigger is a role within BDSM, someone who enjoys tying other people up with rope.
A Rigger’s style varies from person to person.
Some are bondage Riggers, who enjoy using tight rope patterns and knots to completely restrict the movement of the Rope Bottom. The partner may be placed into an uncomfortable position, perhaps even as part of a predicament play scene where the Rope Bottom has to choose between two less than pleasant options.
Some are sexual Riggers, who reserve tying to the bedroom for use in sexual play.
In this scenario their partner is restrained in ways to heighten sexual arousal. It may be as simple as tying their wrists together with a simple double column tie and attaching the other end of the rope to the bedhead.
Or it may be an elaborate set of ties which hold the legs apart for teasing. (If this sounds like you, check out my rope bondage for sexual play course ).

Some Riggers simply enjoy rigging and rope bondage for the pure look or it. It is an artistic hobby to them, not necessarily sexual.
These types of riggers may perform suspension rigging, where the Rope Bottom is hoisten above the ground, suspended by rope to long bamboo poles or wooden rings suspended from the ceiling. (This requires lots of training, as suspension rope bondage is the most risky form of rope bondage).
A Top in BDSM, loosely speaking, refers to the person who is performing the action in that moment of time.
When a Rigger is restraining his or her Rope Bunny, they are the Top in the scene, their partner being the Rope Bottom.
They are in control of what ties they use and how their partner is restrained.
So yes, the Rigger is a Top in a rope bondage scene, and might be referred to as the Rope Top.
A Rigger doesn’t have to be a Dom. There are plenty of subs who enjoy tying others or even themselves up with rope.
You may also have a situation where the Dominant partner requests his sub tie him up. He would be the Rope Bottom, and his sub the Rope Top, yet he would still be the Dominant due to being in charge of the overall scene.
No. Just like a Dominant can be male or female, a Rigger can be male or female. Gender makes no difference.
I consider myself a sexual Rigger. I restrain my partners for two reasons primarily:
I don’t find rope bondage itself a turn on – as in the act of tying does not arouse me. But I do enjoy knowing I am able to give my partner what they want and make them feel amazing.
I do get turned on after my partner is restrained however, and I’m free to use them however I want 😉
Know you know what a Rigger is, you are probably wondering how you can learn to be one!
Well I have good news for you. First up, read my guide called Learn Rope Bondage: A Beginner’s Guide to Rope Bondage for Dom Sub Dynamics . It goes through all the terminology and basics you need to understand about rope bondage.
When you’re ready to take things to the next level, or want to be shown how to restrain your partner and use the ties to enhance sexual play, you need Sinful Shibari , my rope bonage course designed for Dom sub dynamics.
A Rigger is someone who enjoys restraining another person with rope, either for sexual pleasure or simply as an art form.
Anyone, can learn to be a Rigger regardless of whether you consider yourself Dominant or submissive (although it is more often the submissives who enjoy being restrained and the Dominants who enjoy doing the tying).
I consider learning rope bondage an essential skill for any Dominant, as it is such a versatile skill to have at your disposal, especially as so many subs enjoy being tied up.

What is a rigger in BDSM? Rigger is a non-sexist term that refers to someone who is bound to rope slavery, or who is a top slave of rope. The term, if applied to the man responsible for the ropes that regulated the sails, comes from sailing. This article gives you details on what is a rigger in BDSM? Keep reading this article to get to know more about them.
A rigger is a tyrant, who likes to use bondage and coercion to dominate a submissive. Rigger is a term commonly associated with a man who likes to tie up cords. But there are various methods a rigger can use to stop a sub.
You may like to fight or be punished with your sub, or you may be able to take advantage of it if a sub is sweet, because it stays motionless.
An installer can leverage other dominant activities. They will mix impact play with their slavery, when they have a sadistic streak. Waxing is something which installers will enjoy adding to their game of bondage.
For practical purposes installers who like rope should do this. The rope is fast and simple to use to secure a sub. This can be inexpensive and quick to buy too.
Yet some riggers can enjoy more techniques of creative bonding, such as shibari and kinbaku, the two Japanese modes of moderation. They may like to use a rope in suspension to lift a subject off the ground or they may be in bonds that leave the subject on the ground but fully immobilised. For using this you must know what is a rigger in BDSM.
There are different types of ropes that can be used by a rigger which will give the sub unique senses and may require specific approaches during attachment.
What is a rigger in BDSM ? If your only exposure to slavery riggers is from watching Vimeo’s videos of rope slavery, it’s easy to believe that many slavery riggers suit a certain mold.
If you were to ask the casual observer, they would probably describe gi hanging Waifish stockings to the riggers as older men, as Japanese folk music plays in the background.
Yeah, that clarifies some of the riggers but not all. Let’s take down those myths and learn more about riggers and what they’re doing.
Was anyone ever sexually attached? Well it really depends on what somebody feels about rigging and sex. Conventional kinbaku has a profound sexual component, and the practice of binding and manipulating the lower body is intended to create a sense of shame and sexual weakness.
Watching these scenes or engaging in them can be incredibly personal, and yes, exciting. Western slavery underlines the value of slavery, simply by holding back someone from doing evil and wonderful things to them. Bedroom bondage is almost a foreplay kind of thing.
Sex is not the primary intention of slavery anyway. Careful rigging will potentially make sex absolutely impractical.
what is a rigger in BDSM? Rigging may be an imaginative or innovative process, a minute of spousal interaction or a ludicrous reunion. People are looking for a lot of different things from linked sales which have nothing to do with sex.
Manipulating the partner in a bed is simply a perfect warm-up for consensual sex. But riggers can also have a relationship moment without anticipating or wanting touch. Linking someone requires that you pay attention to what your partner communicates.
An intense rigging experience could be emotionally and physically exhausting, to the extent that a scene simply does not require penetrating sex. Often the string is a part of a sex scene, often the performance is the string itself.
It’s convenient to assume riggers are doing all the work because they are inhabiting the action in a scene. An observer will observe the installer pushing the rope onto the lower body applying it.
This takes a degree of ability to be a rigger, to firmly bind someone while making the interaction fun or even sensual. The contrast is striking, watching a rigger walk gracefully through a display that any relation he has to the bottom is totally destroyed by a rigger who hits his rope. Yeah, riggers do a lot but in one scene they don’t do anything.
Note my earlier comment that the rope is fundamentally collaborative. The funds can improve the physical, mental and emotional dimensions of a scene by obtaining a chain.
A great backdrop uplifts a rope scene, leaving your rig better. It is most evident when the string isn’t well received by an edge.
If a bottom fails to cooperate with the rest, the scene won’t be perfect regardless of the size of the rig. The appropriations are very significant.
This subject concerns what I discussed earlier about selling intentions. For several riggers, linking is a matter of dominance, the constraint they impose is part of the dynamics of power exchange. Think of a dominant man tying his sub before a spanking, the rope is an instrument and may be part of a bigger scene. Another example is the one of a specifically displayed rope harness, this little piece of rigging is an energy symbol. In such instances, in return for the effort of a consensually dominant operation, the dominant gets feedback.

Honestly, when you’re just starting to explore the wide world of BDSM, the sheer volume of options, terms, etiquette and BDSM gear can seem a little intimidating. That’s okay! You don’t need to (and can’t possibly!) know everything all at once. Take your time, explore, do some research and really try and understand why people like BDSM .
A great way to satisfy your curiosity about all things bondage is to read through reviews, articles and blog posts written by people who have been in and around the BDSM scene for a long while. Maybe you’ve done just that! If so, you may have come across the word ‘rigger’ and wondered what, exactly, a BDSM rigger is.
Wonder no more! We’re here to answer at least one of your questions about bondage play, and that’s: ‘what’s a rigger in BDSM?’ Once you have all the info, you can move on to deciding if it’s something you and your partner might be into trying when the mood strikes. No muss, no fuss!
Okay, let’s dive right in. From brat BDSM to primal BDSM , there are many types of roles in the BDSM community. But what is a BDSM rigger you ask? Simply put, a BDSM rigger is someone who enjoys tying rope as part of a BDSM scene. The term originates from sailing, and it’s in reference to the rigging (ropes) of ships and boats. Sailors have to learn a lot of complicated knots, and BDSM riggers do, too, if they want to keep practicing and perfecting their art.
Generally, rigging involves tying up a partner, but there are self-riggers, or people who practice self bondage as well. It’s more challenging to tie yourself up, especially in suspension-based rigging (when the person being tied up is ultimately hanging from the ceiling or a hook), but dedicated riggers have figured out all kinds of ways to satisfy their rope cravings.
There are some major myths about riggers in BDSM. For instance, people may assume that riggers must always be, or want to be, the dominant partner in a scene, that the best rigs are suspension-based, or that riggers have to ‘do all of the work’ by tying super complicated knots. Luckily, none of these are necessarily true. Anyone can be a rigger and use their tying skills when they’re with a partner. Simply put- anyone who enjoys the art form can be a rigger or a rope bunny.
Using rope in BDSM can be as simple as restricting some movement by fashioning a leash for your partner to something complex like a full-body harness. The experience that many riggers have when they’re tying translates to erotic thrills for both their partners. As a rigger becomes more skilled with their medium, they can move between knots and usages of rope as they and their partner decide is best. Just remember to always have a clear safe word, and to honor it at all times.
Just because you’re the one tying the knots doesn’t mean you have to be the dom. The dominant partner doesn’t have to lift a finger as long as they can still command you. While many doms enjoy manhandling their partners, others prefer to relax and let their subs gaze at them or fulfill their needs with just words to guide them.
If your dom looks especially alluring with ropes, they may command you to tie them up and then satisfy them or yourself while they watch to ensure that you follow their rules. There can be something very sexy about waiting on someone else hand and foot, especially when they couldn’t do anything even if they wanted to.
Just make sure to tie them down comfortably if you’re planning on playing for a while.
It might surprise you to learn that not all rigging in BDSM is sexual. In fact, not all of BDSM is sexual either. For many, the process of being tied down or up in various ways is inherently arousing and can lead to some pretty steamy scenes. However, some people enjoy the feel of the rope in their hands and perfecting knots for aesthetic pleasure, and it isn’t sexual at all for them.
Some riggers showcase their work at BDSM conventions or classes, and you can get a sense of the artistry involved. Plus, many of them are willing to teach you their methods, so you too can learn how to tie yourself or your partner like a true artist.
It’s always important to monitor your partner whenever you use a rope for rope bondage to ensure that they are getting proper circulation to any parts that are tied and that their airway is clear. Stay in constant communication with your partner to make sure that everyone is enjoying themselves.
