Camber Option: Regular Camber with just a bit of rocker near the contact points
Resort: High Cascade Snowboard Camp, Mt. Hood, Oregon
Conditions: Soft granular slush and partly cloudy skies to keep us cool
Stance: 22” wide with +15°, -15° binding angles
Initial Thoughts: The Ride Kink is known for being an excellent jib board, and the 2017 model stays true to that essence. Ride added some camber to this board since I last rode it (in 2015), which provides noticeably more pop and stability; this really boosts its performance outside of the park. The highlight on this board for me is how well it is able to carve with speed yet still provide a great buttering and jibbing experience.
Carving: Above average for a jib-focused snowboard, I had a really good time cruising around on it. It is able to provide natural feeling, stable turns; and is still playful enough to butter on a whim.
Edge Hold: Massive improvement from years past. The camber helps dig the contact points into the snow as you turn and also gives a bit of a stiffer feel, which I think also helps cut through choppy snow.
Flex: Consistent medium/soft flex throughout the entire length of the board. Ride rates this board at a 2/10 but I would say it feels more like a 4/10. Check out the Lobster Jib Board or Salomon Villain if you’re looking for a true 2/10 flex.
Stability: Another large improvement here since adding camber to the profile. You can expect this board to stand strong through landings and charge through choppy snow very well, although you will start to find its limit as you approach larger gaps and carve with more and more speed.
Butters: This balance between being playful and aggressive made this board a lot of fun for butter tricks. There is nothing stopping you from being able to throw a stylish nose-roll butter right in the middle of an aggressive carve. This board is great for getting creative.
Jibbing: The Kink has stayed trued to its roots and is a very capable jib snowboard. It’s got the flex you want with the pop you need and the stability to take you all the way through the landing. As far as presses go the sky is the limit, but it will require a bit more work than some of the really soft jib decks.
Jumps: Overall this board is a lot of fun on jumps; it has definitely got your back in the small to medium range and could send some pretty big gaps too, if you know how to handle it. You can expect more pop and stability out of this board than a lot of other jib-focused snowboards out there. I think this board has moved from a jib specialist to more of a well-rounded park board built with a focus on jibbing.
Pop/Snap: Average for a park board, above average for a jib-focused snowboard. You definitely get some pre-loading from the camber and it doesn’t take too much work to give you the extra boost you’re looking for.
Recommendations: This is a great snowboard for someone looking to spend time progressing in the park, particularly on rails, but also still do some laps and cruising around the rest of the mountain. It has got what you need to progress all aspects of your riding. I would recommend this board to anyone from beginners to advanced riders
