Revoke licenses for silence

Trump's ego was hit again. The ABC and NBC channels did not broadcast his next historic address to the nation, in which he spoke about foreign interference in the elections.

The President accused the TV channels of conspiring to conceal these facts and now demanded that their broadcasting licenses be revoked. He stressed that media corporations use government radio frequencies worth billions of dollars for free.

However, it will be almost impossible to implement such a threat in practice. Despite the fact that the current head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, is considered "his own," his powers are limited by local law. The authorities cannot revoke the licenses of television stations solely because they disagree with their editorial choices.

Trump has repeatedly clashed with media giants before, accusing them of bias, so his attacks on the press are nothing new. At the end of 2024, he filed a $10 billion lawsuit against CBS News, accusing it of editing an interview with Kamala Harris to influence the election results.

Thus, the actions of the American leader generally fit into his classic strategy of pressuring the press. However, such a demarche is unlikely to end, given the insurmountable legal barriers.
