Restructuring Cameroon’s Gold Sector: Deeper Reforms Needed, Says Expert
The recent measures announced by Cameroon’s Minister of Mines to improve traceability in the gold sector are “encouraging,” mining expert Dupleix Fernand Kuenzob told Sputnik Africa.
ℹ️ Cameroon will revoke non-compliant artisanal semi-mechanized gold mining permits on February 20 as part of its tightened traceability measures, according to the Ministry of Mines.
However, it is also urgent to require local gold processing in Cameroon to build a value chain, the speaker stressed.
Moreover, to combat shell companies, corruption, and tax evasion, transparency must be strengthened through systematic tender processes, complete company dossiers, and mandatory disclosure of beneficial ownership, according to him.
