When it comes to a show like Resident Evil , you can have the greatest actors and writing in the world. But if the zombies look fake, it’s all for nothing. That’s one of the many elements that makes this new iteration of Resident Evil such a blast. The Netflix original nods to some of the most iconic creatures from its titular video game series while still always feeling original and cool as hell.
Highlighting creepy monsters is baked into the DNA of this series. Nearly every episode sees the 2036 version of Jade (Ella Balinska) or her 2022 counterpart (Tamara Smart) facing off a monster-of-the-week. For anyone who’s played the games, these creatures often feel akin to classic battles. Yet thanks to this series’ phenomenal VFX team, every encounter still looks unique.
For example, Resident Evil ‘s first episode sees the 2022 version of Jade and Billie (Siena Agudong) face off against an infected Doberman. It’s a clear homage to the first game , which featured a Doberman breaking through a window in a scene that haunted ’90s gamers. These dogs have also appeared in the 2002 Resident Evil movie and 2021’s Welcome to Raccoon City . Though we’ve seen this enemy before, the TV version is different. It looks less infected, infusing an already nerve-racking scene with even more tension. Are Jade and Billie running from a regular dog, a rabies-infected dog, or something worse? The creature even acts more dog-like than other iterations, taking breaks to sniff around rather than immediately attacking. These notes of normalcy in such a corrupted foe are jarring.
“These are characters that are of Resident Evil, but aren’t necessarily the exact same monsters from the game,” series showrunner Andrew Dabb explained to Decider. “Those monsters have come and gone. So how do we live in that world and make it our own?”
Dabb joked that his job was “very easy.” “I write like, ‘cool, giant caterpillar,’ and my job’s done. For the visual effects department, they get angry at me for writing that, and then they have to go out and figure it out. We were very lucky to work with a lot of incredibly talented visual effects artists and directors and actors,” Dabb said. That extensive team was led by Kevin Lingenfelser, the visual effects supervisor for Season 1. Prior to Resident Evil, Lingenfelser has worked on projects such as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Loki, and Shadow and Bone.
“It’s one of those things where you watch it on screen, and it’s there for 30 seconds or a minute. You’re like, ‘Oh, my god, that was amazing.’ But a lot of work went into building that moment at every single level,” Dabb said. “From the writing and the pacing and when do we see it, when don’t we see it, to the acting to the visual effects to the editing. There’s not one person that is the person that can take all the credit. It’s a very much group effort, and the group really came together and executed these things incredibly well.”
“It’s very much a visual effects show,” Lingenfelser said in a behind-the-scenes interview . You can see the care and attention to detail from this team in every frame.
In some cases, the monsters in the show have felt like a way to elevate some classic moments from the games. For example, “Welcome to New Raccoon City” follows the 2036 version of Jade as she faces off against a monstrous caterpillar. Though there has yet to be an infected caterpillar in the games, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis did feature the disturbingly large Grave Digger, a worm-like monster. This terrifying monstrosity was cut from the Resident Evil 3 remake, so now thanks to the show, we know what a giant, well-rendered, high-definition version of the Grave Digger would look like. And it’s awesome.
The franchise’s giant spiders get the same treatment. These infected spiders were a common enemy in the first three Resident Evil games . They even appeared in the third game’s remaster . But because the games have to give players time to react, these encounters often felt creepy rather than the full-blown terror a real giant spider would inspire. Not the spider in “The Light.” It’s fast, bloodthirsty, and absolutely massive. This is what phobias are made of.
But no monster gets a better makeover than the zombie crocodile. The zombie croc first appeared in Resident Evil 2 as part of one of the franchise’s most stressful chase scenes. It’s since appeared in that game’s remake. After teasing this particular beast for three episodes, “Revelations” finally unveils a super-duper sized version of the zombie crocodile. And it’s marvelous.
Do you know what people want? A hilariously large monster that causes massive amounts of cathartic destruction while reminding us all how insignificant and stupid we are for daring to mess with Mother Nature. That’s precisely what zombidile delivers. Jurassic World never understood the simple joy of watching a big monster go chomp, but R esident Evil sure does.
But when it comes to Resident Evil’ s monsters, the show is never content with delivering the bare minimum. No, this show is absolutely a straight A student. The show could have hidden its zombie crocodile in shadows, saving time and energy for the team. Instead, most of the zombie croc’s scenes happen in open fields in the middle of the day, a choice that really showcases how huge and scary this creature is. And when zombicroc isn’t shown on land, its other scenes take place in the ever-alarming depths of the ocean. Excellent.
It even does a classic croc death roll. Inspired.
It’s not just that Resident Evil ‘s monsters look fantastic, though they certainly do. Most of the designs walk the line between disturbing and cool. You’d never want to encounter any of them at the end of a dark hallway, but, god, it sure is fun to watch them in action. No, what sets these designs apart is that they always understand the assignment. The experience of playing Resident Evil can often be summed up as screaming “Oh shit!” before laughing manically, either in a warped response to terror or triumphantly as you mow down more baddies. That’s exactly the vibes this show’s creepy crawlies inspire episode after episode. Team Resident Evil, we see how hard you worked, and we salute you. Now excuse us while we rewatch the Licker battle.
