Sherry Birkin is a key part of Resident Evil 2's narrative. Here are some key facts fans need to know about her.
Resident Evil 2 is one of the most beloved entries in the highly popular survival horror series. Resident Evil has had its ups and downs over the years, but many of the staples in Resident Evil 2 have become trademarks of the games. The title’s recent remake has only reignited interest in the game and reminded audiences why it’s regarded as one of Capcom’s finest titles .
The Resident Evil games are exciting and scary, but they also feature many unique characters who have become synonymous with the franchise in some cases. Resident Evil 2’s Sherry Birkin is a very important individual, but she’ s also someone with a much deeper past than it seems.
Sherry’s relationship with her parents is very frayed, but an item that Sherry really cherishes during Resident Evil 2 is a golden locket pendant that she wears around her neck. The pendant becomes a defining element of Sherry and it’s a gift that she received from her mother, Annette, on her 11 th birthday. It turns out that the pendant actually contains a G-Virus sample inside and it’s for this reason that the deadly tyrant, Mr. X continues to pursue Sherry. It’s another example of Sherry’s parents abusing their child’s love.
Sherry Birkin survives Resident Evil 2 and lives to see another day, but not without getting both infected and provided with the antidote for the dangerous G-Virus . Claire cures Sherry of her symptoms before she loses control of herself, but the residual side effects leave Sherry with a heightened ability to heal her wounds. It’s a detail that’s not taken advantage of in the game and the same is true during her Resident Evil 6 return, but it’s still a trait that she possess. Perhaps zombie’s hurt her a little less due to her G-Virus diagnosis.
Sherry's relationship is primarily with Claire throughout Resident Evil 2 , but the game's ending show that Claire has to keep on moving forward to find her own family. This leaves Sherry with Leon S. Kennedy , which is not what either of them expected, but they find a comfortable kinship in one another.
Leon acts as Sherry's guardian in the immediate aftermath of Resident Evil 2 , but it's the interference of the government and bioterrorism affairs that leads to their separation. Their time together is brief, but it's likely that Sherry still internalized some important values from her time with Leon.
Sherry is a well-developed character Resident Evil character with a rough history. Claire's need to protect Sherry may sometimes be a nuisance, but there's a strange perk that accompanies Sherry's character that's exclusive to her. Sherry is so short that the zombies that are near her won't be able to land any bites on her . It can add an interesting strategy to the player's approach. However, the zombies' projectile acid vomit attack can still hurt Sherry, so it's not as if the zombies aren't without methods of hurting Sherry.
One of the most endearing aspects of Resident Evil 2 is the very sisterly bond that's formed between Sherry Birkin and Claire Redfield. They're both characters who are separated from their biological family. Claire leaves in search of her brother, Chris, but the character-based epilogues in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis , provide a little context on what happens next with Sherry. When the military tries to figure out what to do with the orphaned Sherry, she voices her resolve in how Claire will return for her. It's bittersweet that this reunion doesn't play out as Sherry has hoped.
Sherry Birkin has brilliant parents, but that very brilliance is used against her when she's turned into a test subject and incubator for the G-Virus. It seems like Sherry is about to incur a deadly fate that's similar to that of her father, however Claire is able to cure her.
Sherry's life is saved, but the G-Virus remains in her on some level and as a result of its effects her aging process is slowed down. Sherry remains very youthful, which is consistent when the character re-emerges in Resident Evil 6 (although she has she still aged).
Many of the Resident Evil titles feature a mechanic where one of the protagonists has to help a supporting character safely gain passage to somewhere and avoid harm. Claire Redfield becomes Sherry's source of safety during the game, but if Claire gets too far ahead of Sherry then she'll just go into flight mode. Sherry will crouch down and cower in fear until Claire returns by her side. Resident Evil 2 is an advanced game for its time, but it still has certain limitations, which is likely why Sherry is tethered to Claire like this.
Sherry Birkin is only 12 during the events of Resident Evil 2 , but she manages to do a commendable job at surviving a zombie outbreak on her own. Sherry is separated from her parents and effectively takes up refuge in the Raccoon City Police Department . She survives a lot longer than most characters and this resilience is seen again in one of the Resident Evil novelizations, City of the Dead , which makes Sherry a major character and continues to show her ability to survive on her own in Raccoon City around the same time period.
The events of Resident Evil 2 conclude with Sherry temporarily alongside Leon S. Kennedy, but it seems clear to both of them that this unfortunately can't be a permanent solution to Sherry's problem. Claire's absence leads to Sherry being taken into the custody of the government since she not only has no other place to go, but they're also interested in how she houses the G-Virus. It leads to a grim childhood for Sherry, but it does ultimately give structure to her future when she becomes a government agent herself later in life.
The Resident Evil games are no strangers to partner characters that are saddled to the protagonists , but Resident Evil 2's Sherry Birkin is also playable during brief portions of the game. Sometimes characters like Sherry have rudimentary means of defense, but Sherry has no weapons or retaliatory tools and she's also slower than the standard character. Sherry does have a First Aid Spray that she's able to use to heal herself if she takes too much damage, but that's her only asset. Ironically, when Sherry Birkin returns in Resident Evil 6 she's actually quite the powerful and well-armed character.

Resident Evil 2: How to Solve the Sherry Puzzle

The Resident Evil 2 remake puts us back in the shoes of Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield, along with the two other supporting characters, Ada Wong and Sherry Birkin. Here’s how to solve the main puzzle you’ll come across in Sherry’s segment in Resident Evil 2 .
You’ll only take control of Sherry when playing through Claire’s campaign. About halfway through, you’ll take control of the young girl in the orphanage. Your first order of business is to get out of the room.
Once you regain control of your character, check the room for a doll, then examine it to find a puzzle block. On the table nearby, you should see a wooden box puzzle that you can use the block on.
The tricky thing about the Sherry puzzle in Resident Evil 2 is that the block order seems to be randomized every time you play through this segment. Because of that, it’s not possible to provide an exact solution or a series of steps that you can follow to solve it each time.
The good news is that the final solution will always be the same, with the rightmost block pattern forming a triangle and a star. With that in mind, just look for the blocks with that same pattern and then line them up accordingly. Once all the top and front-facing patterns are matching, you’ll solve the puzzle.
If you’re trying to go for the Young Escapee achievement in Resident Evil 2, you need to solve the Sherry puzzle and get out of the room in 60 seconds.
As we mentioned before, the block order is randomized for each playthrough. However, it will not change between auto-saves. This means that you can solve the puzzle once, write down the solution and exact steps, then reload the auto-save to attempt it within 60 seconds.
And that’s all you need to know about how to solve the Sherry puzzle in Resident Evil 2 . Be sure to check our Resident Evil 2 guide wiki for more tips and information on the game.
Question: How do you solve the Sherry puzzle in Resident Evil 2?
Answer: All you have to do is line up the blocks so that the patterns match on both the top and front-facing sides. The block order is randomized, but the final solution will always remain the same.
