Renzo staking gives an ETH holder ezETH, a liquid restaking token, instead of leaving the deposit inside a validator. What does renzo staking actually do?

Renzo staking is liquid restaking: a user deposits ETH or a supported liquid staking token, and Renzo issues ezETH to represent the position. The underlying ETH is staked on Ethereum and used through EigenLayer to help secure additional services.

An AVS, or Actively Validated Service, is a decentralised service such as a bridge, oracle or data system that receives security from restakers and offers rewards in return. That extra layer is why Renzo is not the same as ordinary ETH staking.

ezETH is a reward-bearing token. Instead of increasing the number of tokens in the wallet, rewards are reflected through the exchange value of ezETH against its underlying assets. The token can remain in the wallet, move to a decentralised exchange or be supplied to a compatible DeFi market.

Why ezETH changes the size-and-speed decision

Renzo removes the 32 ETH requirement associated with running a solo Ethereum validator, but it adds protocol and restaking risk. Ethereum’s staking guide explains that pooled staking can accept much smaller deposits and issue liquid tokens, although third-party solutions carry their own risks.

That makes ezETH attractive to a small or medium holder who wants an ETH-denominated position with DeFi access. It is less attractive to someone whose first priority is the simplest possible risk profile. A solo validator has operational work, but it avoids handing the staking strategy to a liquid-restaking protocol.

Speed also needs careful interpretation. Minting ezETH can take only the time needed for wallet approval and blockchain confirmation. Exiting through Renzo is different: the position may enter a withdrawal queue, and selling ezETH on a decentralised exchange can expose the holder to slippage or a temporary discount.

Where the money goes, and what it costs

The visible cost is not just gas. Renzo’s ezETH FAQ states that it charges a 10% fee on rewards generated through restaking, with that fee split equally between protocol reserves and node operators. Ethereum staking rewards and EigenLayer rewards are therefore not the same as the user’s net return.

A deposit may also involve approval gas, the deposit transaction itself, a swap when the chosen asset is not accepted directly, and price impact. If ezETH is sold rather than redeemed, the market price, trading fee and available liquidity affect the result.

Instant withdrawal, where available, is a separate convenience product. It can bypass the normal queue but charges a variable fee based on the withdrawal buffer. A lower-cost exit generally requires more patience.

How to deposit without losing the plot

  1. Choose Ethereum mainnet or another supported route shown by the interface.
  2. Confirm that the wallet holds a supported asset and enough ETH for gas.
  3. Select ETH, stETH or the relevant supported token and enter the deposit amount.
  4. Review the quoted ezETH amount, exchange rate, fee, network and estimated gas cost.
  5. Approve the token if the wallet requests approval.
  6. Confirm the deposit transaction and wait for it to settle.
  7. Check that ezETH arrived at the intended wallet address before using it in DeFi.
  8. For an exit, compare a secondary-market sale with a queued withdrawal before submitting either transaction.

What can go wrong after the mint?

ezETH is not a claim on an instantly available pile of ETH. Renzo’s withdrawal documentation describes a WithdrawQueue contract that locks ezETH when a withdrawal begins and burns it when the underlying collateral is claimed.

The same documentation lists several delays: Ethereum validator exits, EigenLayer’s withdrawal delay and Renzo’s own buffer delay. It says the expected wait can be about seven days when the buffer has assets and between 10 and 15 days when it does not. The exact estimate can change with network conditions and queue liquidity.

Restaking also adds another layer of dependence. The user relies on Renzo’s contracts, operator selection, EigenLayer’s rules, the AVSs being secured and the liquidity of ezETH markets. Slashing, contract bugs, oracle failures, bridge problems and a falling ezETH market price can all matter. Diversification may reduce concentration, but it cannot remove protocol risk.

The practical rule is simple: do not use Renzo for money that must be available on a fixed date. Keep a separate liquidity reserve, avoid leverage until the withdrawal path is understood, and treat displayed APY as variable rather than promised.

Do I need 32 ETH for Renzo staking?

No. Renzo pools deposits, so the minimum depends on the interface and gas economics rather than the 32 ETH solo-validator requirement.

Is ezETH the same as ETH?

No. ezETH is a liquid restaking token whose value and liquidity depend on Renzo’s contracts, underlying assets and markets.

Does Renzo guarantee a fixed APY?
