We are visiting Amsterdam next week-end with our 3 sons (12, 14 and 17 years old). Obviously, they want to see the RLD> Is this advisable? We are usually very open-minded and they know about most things sexual.(probably more than I do!) I'm just not sure how much is actually "on display" when you walk around. Any suggestions? Thanks, Roni
The girls are behind glass and wearing bikinis and such. The window displays of the sex shops leave nothing to the imagination - DVD covers, toys and everything else is openly displayed.
I think most of what they see will cause infinite giggling and elbow jabbing in boys that age.
Forgot to say the RLD is small so, to satisfy their curiosity, you could walk them up a couple of blocks and out into the rest of Amsterdam .
The girls are behind glass and not nude, so there shouldnt be a problem if you are an openminded person. i know people who walked with their 11 year old son through the redlight district and he turned out fine, so there is nothing to worry about
Take care! have a great time in Holland!!!
thanks all. I'm relieved at your suggestions, because I knew I wouldn't be able to talk them out of it anyway! Apart from the Anne Frank House (and we'll also do Van Gogh), any other suitable ideas for a weekend?
MellowD Sez: "I think most of what they see will cause infinite giggling and elbow jabbing in boys that age."
Experiencing all sorts of things is good for everyone.
Pala, I was trying to give you "older" boys a break. I myself laughed out loud at a few things I saw and I'm only young at heart.
"any other suitable ideas for a weekend?"
If the weather is good, I'd head down to one of the beaches. My favorite is Scheveningen near The Hague . Lots of things for young people to do. The fish and chips at the "Simonis" stand near the pier is very good.
If they know about most things sexual there wiil be no problem at all. if they do not you have to expain, I suppose. Just behave "normal".
Should think they´d be more embarrassed at being with the parents (as most teens are when sex is concerned) The girls are pretty and not obscene. Some of the bookshops with stuff in the window is a bit shocking but after the first time kids dont take a lot of notice anyway. There is also a big gay scene in and around RLD (and all over Amsterdam ) so their education will be complete. Have fun

Traditionally home to female and transgender prostitutes, activists hope the neighborhood's famous windows can be opened up to all sex workers. The equality campaign is part of Amsterdam's Gay Pride festival.
Several men on Saturday displayed their half-naked bodies in some of the tall windows that make up Amsterdam's Red Light District.
The protest is part of a call for equal rights in Europe's most liberal tourist destination, which is mostly inhabited by female and transgender female sex workers.
Prostitutes rent a room in the De Wallen neighborhood and use one of the 300 or so windows to advertise their services.
But despite making up 5% of the estimated 25,000 sex workers operating in the Netherlands, men are rarely seen.
The so-called occupation of the Red Light District organized by the non-profit campaign group My Red Light, which rents rooms to sex workers and advocates for improved rights and labor conditions.
Campaigners insist that male sex workers also need safe spaces to operate from, noting that many men experience violence, abuse and exploitation while carrying out their work.
Organizers said the men taking part in the photoshoot are models and not available for sex.
Saturday's protest forms part of Amsterdam's Gay Pride festival, which runs until Sunday, and which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
Amsterdam's first female mayor, Femke Halsema, recently announced plans to repair De Wallen's reputation as a dangerous part of the city, amid a rise in drunken tourists, bachelor parties, human trafficking and drug use.
She also noted a major increase in unlicensed, underground prostitution.
Amsterdam’s more than one hundred kilometers (more than 62 miles) of canals are the best way to get around the city. The canal system dates back to the 17th century when the Dutch capital was the richest city and one of the busiest ports in the world. Today these waterways are used for everything from daily commutes to sightseeing.
For those who prefer dry land, biking is the perfect option. With more than 800,000 on the road, bikes outnumber people in Amsterdam. Every summer it is one of the many cities that host the World Naked Bike Ride to raise awareness of toxic emissions and promote body positivity. But every day’s a good day to take in the sites on two wheels.
The gables decorating many houses are the quintessence of traditional Amsterdam. The various types of gables provide insight into the history of each of the buildings. Many fine examples can be seen along the banks of the city’s canals.
The sheer amount of art in Amsterdam is mind-boggling. The Rijksmuseum on Museum Square houses one of the world’s finest collections of works by the Dutch Masters, including Rembrandt, Hals, Vermeer, and Steen. It is here that Rembrandt’s ‘The Night Watch’ can be seen, having been returned in 2013 after a decade of renovations to the museum.
Vincent van Gogh is memorialized in the Museumplein as well. Along with more than 700 paintings and drawings, the Van Gogh Museum features the post-impressionist’s correspondence and the works of his contemporaries. For its re-opening in 2015, the museum was surrounded by mazes of his most recognizable motif — sunflowers.
It was on Prinsengracht in Amsterdam that Anne Frank and 7 others hid for over 2 years during World War II. Her diary, translated into 60 languages, is testimony to the human capacity for optimism in the face of evil. The main house is now a museum, but the Secret Annex has been preserved, allowing visitors to more fully comprehend the harsh reality of a life in hiding.
History, art, and joie de vivre can all be found in abundance in Amsterdam. This city celebrates hedonism and heroism, pleasure and enlightenment. On May 5, Liberation Day marks the end of World War II for the Netherlands. Festivities take place along the canals and alleys of the Netherlands’ changing, unpredictable, and lively capital.
The Red Light district in the inner city evokes Amsterdam’s historic reputation for vice. But it is far from just salacious. For the more academically inclined, the oldest sex museum in the world, the Venustempel, explores the history and culture of sex, while Red Light Secrets (pictured) is the world’s first museum of prostitution.
Amsterdam’s varied cultural treasures are not equally appreciated by everybody. The city is also (in)famous for its policy on marijuana. Smoking is both the norm and a draw for tourists, many of whom travel to the city explicitly to indulge. Easy access to the drug in coffee shops has contributed to the capital’s tolerant reputation as well as the heated debate with regard to drug tourism.
Ground-breaking modern architecture can be seen throughout the city, contrasting with the traditional Renaissance structures. Among the most popular are the Lex van Delden Bridge and the Woodlofts Buiksloterham. Renzo Piano’s NEMO Science Museum (pictured) pays tribute to Amsterdam’s maritime origins while pointing towards the future.

Amsterdam Red Light District Tours
Recent Traveller Reviews “Interesting and Safe Red-light District tour. Our...” “Like visiting a friend and shown around” “Great insight into the history behind the...” “MARTIN THE PIMP” “Very different!”
Shocking news today, which came from an official study done by the municipality of Amsterdam. This is the first time in the history of Amsterdam, that more male prostitutes are active in the red light district than female prostitutes. During our tours we’ve already noticed the increased number of male prostitutes, but we never thought the number of male prostitutes were growing so quickly.
Looking at the data of the research, currently 75% of the windows in the red light district are filled with male prostitutes, 5% are transgender and only 20% are female prostitutes. Previous research done in 2012 by the local government of Amsterdam showed that the red light district had just 5% male prostitutes and 93% were female. The same 2012 research indicated that human trafficking is involved in the red light district. The municipality of Amsterdam concluded that the percentage of human trafficking lies somewhere between the 8% and 90%.
It’s unclear what caused the complete turnaround in male and female prostitution. This will be investigated in the next research commissioned by the city of Amsterdam. It could be that the astonishing turnaround in male prostitution is caused by project 1012 (named after the zipcode of the Red Light District area). This project is focussed reducing crime in the district. To reduce the crime, the government of Amsterdam decided to buy out entrepreneurs and brothel/ window owners. This option was chosen because Amsterdam officials couldn’t proof whether the entrepreneurs were running a legal or illegal business.
Charles Geerts , one of Amsterdam’s biggest brothel owners received 25 million Euros from the municipality of Amsterdam. In total he sold 17 properties. The properties were appraised for approximately 12 million Euros. Since the acquisition by the government, most of the brothels went empty and had closed curtains behind the windows. Now, all those windows are filled with male prostitutes. It is very likely that the females prostitutes have left the business because of the disastrous policies by the government, caused by project 1012.
Not only did Amsterdam buyout entrepreneurs in red light district. They’ve also decided withdraw the permits of coffeeshops owners, which therefor needed to close their business. It is plausible that the closing of these coffeeshops and brothels decreased the number of male visitors. An anonymous person who works as an official for the government of Amsterdam stated that the male prostitutes are being subsidised by the municipality. In addition to the salary which they earn via their customers, male prostitutes also receive 1250 Euro per month. He also stated that around 350 male prostitutes will continue to receive this subsidy for the next three years.

2 gay bars.. Not busy on my last visit.. Reasonably priced.
Don’t listen to the bad press! It is what it is!! And I really don’t mind that. It has changed its name, twice that I know of, but it’s much the same that’s on offer.
The boys attitudes will be an exact reflection of your own, so be respectful! The drinks are no more expensive than any other club and it can get busy, but you can go and be the third one there and that’s including the barman! Tram stop 3min away and you could walk to the train station in 20!
I enjoyed it!
Rude staff, please don’t bring your money here.
Very nice new friendly bar&club. Day bar is good for an afternoon or early evening visit and when you are done with the drinks upstairs its very easy to move to the club downstairs. I really like the place, I am there almost every day :-) I can highly recommend this place.
I have known these two bars for several years and have experienced them under different owners. Under no circumstances has the quality under the current owner developed for the better!
Many times I heard from employees that they felt treated unfairly by the new boss. This also affects the atmosphere felt by the guest! No wonder then that the day bar and night bar are mostly very empty. Also at the weekend I met there only a few guests.
The surcharge of 100 CZK for "shows" I was charged several times even if the whole night no show took place!
Actually, it is not worthwhile to even get into these bars!
