Renault's hands free card was a pioneering piece of technology when it first came out 20 years ago. The exterior design is the same but the technology has been upgraded to make it easier to use and more difficult to hack.
It can't be used to unlock the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle unless it is activated by the driver. This is because radio signal antennas "around" the car are configured to detect whether the key is located outside or inside the car. The key can still function from a distance to start the ignition of your car, but it won't be able to unlock the doors, and that's to protect you.
Second, the wireless remote control transmissions of the system use the rolling-code. This lowers the likelihood of the security being breached by someone intercepting and retransmitting the control message in order to gain access, but isn't a guarantee of avoiding the possibility completely. [1]
