The Story of the Renault Card Key

The hands-free card is one of the most significant inventions that have ever changed the way that people use cars. Pascaline, Head Cross-Cutting Products for Renault Group Products talks us through the history and development of the device.

The origins of the card

A vital part of the daily lives of car owners the hands-free card from Renault has become a worldwide hit. The first time it was designed, 20 years ago, it is one of the company's leading innovations. Pascaline, Head of Cross-Cutting Products at the Products division, takes us on an exploration to discover the story behind this helpful accessory.

It was in 2001 that the Laguna II, a saloon that was designed to reflect a lifestyle driving, was introduced into production. It was a time of tremendous innovation, featuring a host of new equipment features that helped customers to enjoy the full advantages of their vehicle.

The occupants still had to use keys to open and close their doors. Renault engineers determined that this was a major problem for many people.

They decided to incorporate an electronic contactless card into their vehicles and to develop an system that allows drivers to open and start their cars by simply hand gestures. The result is the card key that is now found on a third of Renault vehicles. The car will be unlocked automatically when the card is in close proximity to the ignition barrel or the centre console. This is an original Renault remote control card (without blade). It comes individually packed and ready to be programmed using Abrites diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia software with the ProTAG programmer.

The hands-free card was first launched in 2001 on the Laguna II saloon, which was designed to be the "lifestyle" car of 21st century. Renault was unable to test all possible uses despite the detailed design guidelines which was based on more than 6,000 conversations with customers.

Luckily, replacement renault megane key card on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was in an hotel at the time and used his room key to open his car. As the key featured tiny magnetic strips, he thought that it would be possible to make a car key that worked similarly.

In the years to follow the card was hailed as an invention that revolutionized the world and is now used on two of three Renault vehicles. While smartphones may be nearing the point of replacing it, Renault has chosen to harness these new capabilities without leaving the hands-free cards by the wayside.

The keyless entry system

The hands-free card from Renault was a revolutionary piece of technology when it was introduced twenty years ago. Its exterior is still the same, but the technology inside has received some upgrades to make it more user-friendly and harder to hack.

It's not possible to use it from outside to unlock doors or start the car until the driver activates it. The reason is that the radio signal antennas "around" the car are configured to detect whether the key is in or inside it. The key will work at a distance to begin the ignition, but not to unlock the doors, and that's for your security.

The wireless remote control transmissions of the system employ the rolling-code. This lowers the likelihood of security being compromised by someone who intercepts and retransmits a control message to gain access, but does not eliminate the risk altogether. [1]
