Comparing Two Dreamers: The Onceler (The Lorax) and Remy (Ratatouille)

So, I was rewatching some old theories--as you do--when I came across a comment on MatPat's video about The Lorax, made by YouTube account "HELLO":
MatPat: "I'm sorry, but I can't fault a guy with a dream, that overcomes adversity to get tremendous success as the bad guy here"
Also MatPat: "Remy is the villain of ratatouille"
This is meant to say that Mat is giving double standards--calling the Onceler a villain for doing the same thing Remy does. But, I'd have to disagree with that. So, I decided to write an essay that would make my 10th grade English teacher proud--comparing two dreamers in animated movies to see why the hero is the villain and the villain is the hero. It's time to make MatPat proud!
First off, let's compare the motivations of the Onceler and Remy. The Onceler is, like the commenter says, a guy with a dream. He wants to make money, which is something I can't fault him or anyone else for. We all want to make money--hell, we all need to make money in order to survive. So, the Onceler is not a bad person or a villain for wanting to make money.
Next, we have Remy. Remy's goal is to be a master chef at Gusteau's restaurant. Again, I can't fault him for this. It's not evil to have dreams. So, so far, it seems like our intrepid commenter is right. But then, we get to how they go about achieving their dreams.
The Onceler uses the... leaves? They're not really leaves, but they're not turned into thneeds until they're processed. So... tops? Sure, let's go with tops. The Onceler uses the tops of the trees to make thneeds because he believes that the thneed will be the next big thing. And, turns out, he's right. Everyone wants thneeds. So, the Onceler and his family get to work making thneeds. But, the Onceler is not doing anything wrong. The tops of the trees regrow, so there's no harm being done to the environment, and he's making people happy. That's not a villain; that's just a successful and conscious businessman.
Now, back to Remy. Like I said, Remy's goal is not a bad thing. But, the problem arises when you consider who--or rather what --Remy is. Remy is a rat. And rats are most definitely not allowed in fine-dining restaurants like Gusteau's. And we can't attribute this to it being in another world. The movie of Ratatouille clearly takes place is a recreation of France in the mid-to-late 2000's. Rats are certainly not allowed in restaurants, especially in the kitchens. So, while Remy wanting to be a chef isn't bad in its own right, it's like a spider wanting to be a therapist--it's just not gonna happen. And yet, Remy doesn't care that he's not allowed in the kitchen. He doesn't even care that the restaurant may get closed down if health inspectors find a rat in the kitchens. He just wants to cook. At least the Onceler is doing something because others want it. Remy is only doing things for himself.
Now, I know what you might be thinking: "But the Onceler ends up cutting down the trees!" And I hear you, but that's not his idea. The Onceler is not a bad person--his mother is.
The Onceler's mother is the one who suggests they cut down the trees since they aren't making enough thneeds to satisfy demand. The Onceler gives in because his mother has looked down on him his whole life, so getting her approval means everything to him. As someone who had an overbearing parent with high expectations that never seemed to be met, I can attest to that fact.
Remy, on the other hand, actively puts others' lives in danger for his own goals. And it's not because someone else coerces him into doing so--he just feels like it. He leaves his rat colony without the ability to test food for rat poison, potentially bringing the deaths of all of his friends. He also threatens the reataurant with closing down, and ties up the health inspector and throws him in the food cupboard so he and his colony won't get caught.
Remy is a sociopath--he is unable to feel empathy for others, acting only out of self interest. The Onceler, on the other hand, is, like MatPat said, "a guy with a dream who overcomes adversity to get tremendous success."

I highly recommend you give Ratatouille a rewatch before you go around parroting Matpat's bad rhetoric. You say that Remy left his rat colony without a food tester, but that's not what the movie shows. He was forcibly separated after the old lady living in the house tries to shoot them all away. He didn't mean to leave them. And he only stayed in Paris to pursue becoming a chef because he believed he had no hope of finding his family again. Sure, he does find them again, but at that point, he has already made a commitment to Linguini to help him fake being a chef. Would it really be less villainous to leave Linguini high and dry at that point? You also claim that Remy is a sociopath, which is again, just Matpat's misinterpretation of events, based mostly on a comedic moment of Remy taking his brother on a rooftop to get struck by lightning. Not that Remy had any way of knowing that would happen, since the storm only started coming in as he was already cooking the mushroom. Your entire paragraph about Remy not being allowed to be a cook because he's a rat reads a whole lot like a white slave owner trying to justify why black people shouldn't be allowed to read. And I hope you can understand why that's not a good thing. Remy is very clearly shown to be very conscious about his hygiene, washing his hands and the other rats before they start handling food. There's no real reason Remy shouldn't become a chef other than a close-minded belief that rats are disease carrying vermin. Remy is not a villain for trying to change a bad system. If we listened to society everytime they said that people of a certain group shouldn't be allowed to do certain things, we'd be living in a very different and very backwards world. Also, giving the Onceler a pass because it wasn't initially his idea to chop down the trees isn't very fair. It may not have been his idea, but he's still the one that did it. And blaming your parents for your choices isn't good either. We are all responsible for our own choices. We have the ability to stand up to our parents, especially as adults, if we think that's the right thing to do. Remy may have been responsible for shutting down a restaurant (And only because of Skinner's actions and as I said before, a close-minded belief that rats are filthy) but the Onceler is responsible for destroying an entire ecosystem. I mean, he could cut down some of the trees, sure, but he could've stopped before cutting ALL of them. And while you're right that it's not necessarily a bad thing to want to make money, I would argue that at some point, pursuing too much money is absolutely evil. And doing evil things to make money doesn't suddenly become good. We need money to live, but the Onceler appeared to be living just fine, and at one point, wasn't just making a decent living, but had become obscenely wealthy. And then he kept trying to make more money. He became blinded to the fact that his quest to become wealthy and successful was destroying the homes of countless other lives and robbing them of their precious food source. He also made the air unbreathable for the people living in the town nearby, and even shut down his own business by wastefully destroying all of his own supply without thinking about ways in which he can replenish them, which also would've been a good thing for the surrounding ecosystem. And it wasn't like he wasn't warned. That's what the Lorax was trying to do the whole time. He chose not to listen. Both of Matpat's videos on Ratatouille and the Lorax are bad revisionist interpretations of the characters that seem to be warped to present a pro-capitalist message. Both the Onceler and Chef Skinner are praised in his videos, despite their clearly villainous actions, because they are capitalists and business owners, which Matpat seems to believe makes you good no matter what else you do. Remy, on the other hand, is bad, because he never made a cent and ended causing a business to get shut down. Even though Skinner was really the one responsible for that, and the Onceler also mismanaged his business and caused it to go out of business. But sweep those under the rug, I guess. At least they made more money than a rat, I suppose.
