Born around 1031, Matilda was the daughter of Baldwin V, Count of Flanders, and Adela of France, a daughter of King Robert II of France. Her lineage alone positioned her as a desirable bride, but it was her own strong will and intelligence that would define her reign. Her marriage to William, Duke of Normandy, in 1053 was a strategic alliance, but it was far from a love match initially. Legend has it that William, faced with Matilda's initial refusal (she reportedly deemed him too low-born, despite his own royal connections), took matters into his own hands and physically assaulted her. This dramatic, albeit apocryphal, tale speaks to the perceived forcefulness of both figures.

However, their union proved remarkably successful. Matilda bore William at least nine children, securing the succession for the ducal line. But her influence extended far beyond childbearing. While William was away campaigning, Matilda often governed Normandy with considerable authority. Historical records indicate she presided over court, issued charters, and managed the duchy's affairs with competence. This level of independent power for a medieval queen was unusual, demonstrating her capacity for leadership.

Her role in the lead-up to the Norman conquest of England in 1066 was also significant. She is credited with commissioning and possibly financing the famous Bayeux Tapestry, a masterful piece of embroidery that not only chronicles the events of the invasion but also serves as an invaluable historical document. This undertaking alone showcases her patronage of the arts and her understanding of propaganda, albeit of a visual nature.

Upon William's coronation as King of England, Matilda was also crowned Queen. She played a visible role in the new regime, even traveling to England on occasion. However, her primary base of power remained in Normandy. Her later years were marked by personal tragedy, including the death of her husband and several of her sons. Yet, she continued to act as regent for her son, Henry, in Normandy until her own death in 1083.

Reine Mathilde's legacy is that of a woman who defied the typical constraints of her era. She was a queen who exercised considerable political power, a patron of the arts, and a mother who secured a dynasty.
