The story begins when Pip is taken in by an old and poor man named Joe Gargery. Then Pip meets a girl, Miss Havisham. She had been left by her father when she was very young. After this Pip learns that he was never meant to belong to the world of his childhood. He is forced to live a life of crime and poverty.

The story is set in London in the 1840s and focuses on the lives of three young men and the effects of the social changes that swept through the country at the time.
The three main characters are:
- Charles Peacock (a young man who has just left school and is hoping to make his way in life)
- John Peacock, Charles' brother, who is a lawyer and a member of Parliament
- Thomas Peacock, John's brother and a wealthy landowner
The book starts off with Charles Peacock at his sister's wedding.
