Camus' The Rebel is the first book of his that I had the great pleasure of reading. Eloquent and enlightening, The Rebel speaks to me in a way that no other 20th century philosophical work has, at least in its entirety. The Rebel is both an introduction of new ideas and a history of previous ideas and events: Camus' scholarship is unbelievable in the area of revolt.
But I mean this as no criticism. Judging Ayn Rand on her characterisation and prose style is a bit like judging Jane Austen on her sex scenes. It's completely missing the point, which with Ayn Rand is this: what you're reading is not so much a novel as a moral fable in the manner of Pilgrim's Progress.

The ambiguous nature of good and evil, the importance of duty, common themes in all of Conrad's novels, get an epic treatment in Nostromo (my Modern Library edition is 630 pages long). But for all of its length, the novel, after the first dense, foundation building 50 pages or so, reads quickly.
