The Human Genome Project (HGP) was one of the great feats of exploration in history. Rather than an outward exploration of the planet or the cosmos, the HGP was an inward voyage of discovery led by an international team of researchers looking to sequence and map all of the genes -- together known as the genome -- of members of our species, Homo sapiens.
Chimpanzees and humans share a common ancestor, and show evidence of this in their similar genetic sequences. In comparing the genomes of humans and those of other higher primates, it is seen that humans have a large pair we call Chromosome 2 among our 46 chromosomes, whereas chimpanzees have 48 chromosomes with two pairs of midsize chromosomes, but no large chromosome similar to our Chromosome 2.

The human genome contains approximately 3 billion of these base pairs, which reside in the 23 pairs of chromosomes within the nucleus of all our cells. Each chromosome contains hundreds to thousands of genes, which carry the instructions for making proteins. ... The Human Genome Project could not have been completed s quickly and as effectively ...
A look at the objectives, scale and the diversity of the project, ... The Human Genome Project (HGP) was an international programme that led to the decoding of the entire human genome. It has been described as "one of the great feats of exploration in history. Rather than an outward exploration of the planet or the cosmos, the HGP was an ...
The Human Genome Project was an international scientific collaboration that successfully mapped, sequenced and made publicly available the genetic content of human chromosomes - or all human DNA. Taking place between 1990 and 2003, the project caused many to speculate about the future of medicine.
The finished sequence produced by the Human Genome Project covers about 99 percent of the human genome's gene-containing regions, and it has been sequenced to an accuracy of 99.99 percent. In addition, to help researchers better understand the meaning of the human genetic instruction book, the project took on a wide range of other goals, from ...
