The show is pretty intensely anti-capitalist and anti-rich. And unlike other comparable takes on the same theme, like Hunger Games, Squid Game is thoroughly grounded in reality. It is a much more effective critique for that reason. And I wonder if this plays to some extent into hesitance from major studios.

People don't watch it because of the message, they watch it to see poor people die.
People watch it because it's a well made, interesting, engaging story.
People generally love the poor characters (the leads) and hate the rich ones (VIPs)

Please do not look further into the competition, what Gi-hun had to do win, or his personal opinion on the matter. The beginning is more of a victim-glorification. "Look how stupid you are! You just got abducted, half of you got murdered, and you can't even file a police report without sounding like an idiot. Haha plebs amirite?"
It's hard to see how a show with such a stupid, cringey start can morph into a show worth watching but then again I watched all of The 100 so you definitely shouldn't listen to my opinion.
Actually, wait, yes you should. The 100 turned into a decent show despite the cringe. Not because of it. You don't need characters in the 40 IQ range just to create believable drama.
Instead of being useless to capitalism, entertain your fellow working class to keep them complacent.
