In the US, new licenses take up two weeks to process. Longer if there is a federal holiday. Varies depending on sponsoring VEC (ARRL, Laurel)

Title says it all... I bought a used Icom IC-7000 from a sota buddy to get a step into HF and prepare to get my general license. On Saturday, I took the rig to a park with a local club and set it up in what I asssumed was the correct way to put together a modest 10m station.
Turns out, MFJ mast mounts are made for dipoles. They have a hot end and a shield end. It's not like a mag mount with two sockets. I even had a guy tune it and he didn't notice. Not sure exactly how he got resonance lol. The first few minutes didn't seem to do anything because I was running sideband. I even, somehow, managed to make a contact. Likely all through the feedline.
But then, I tried to hook my 2m magmount into the VHF socket. Popped immediately on FM. I wrongly assumed that it was just too much power for the battery, and dialed it back and stayed on SSB. The radio still turns on, but tonight I took it to a fellow ham's shack and we hooked it to a wattmeter. 100% power gives about 4W. RIP.
Triple check your setups, new hams. Don't cost yourself good money.
