Jennifer Lawrence felt empowered by the nude scenes in her upcoming spy thriller “ Red Sparrow .”
The actress said, at Monday night’s New York premiere of the film, that the challenging role helped her overcome insecurities, including those surrounding her 2014 photo hack.
“The insecurity and fear of being judged for getting nude, what I went through, should that dictate decisions I make for the rest of my life? This movie changed that and I didn’t even realize how important changing that mentality was until it was done,” she said at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. “But I also really challenged myself in ways that I never really had before. The foreign accent. The dancing. It was really taking on a very different leaf.”
Lawrence said she was also mentally prepared for the violent, sexually charged film because director Francis Lawrence had warned her in advance about the tough scenes.
“We talked about it extensively, which was really important for showing up on the day and there being no surprises,” Jennifer Lawrence said. “I knew exactly what was going on and also there was one moment he came out to give me a note and just looked at me like I had clothes, and then I just felt like I had clothes on. I was surrounded by professionals and everybody was completely professional.”
Francis Lawrence said he gave Jennifer Lawrence artist freedom. She was “the first person to see the movie as a whole with those scenes to be able to say ‘I’m with it’ or ‘we need to talk and make some changes.’ And she was totally with it. She didn’t have me pull anything.”
“Look, I wasn’t sure she was going to want to do the movie. And I pitched her the idea in general, but I didn’t tell her much about the content,” Francis Lawrence said. “She liked the idea of the character in general, and I sort of filled her in a little bit along the way, but I wanted her to wait for the script. She thought about it, because clearly she knew what the content was going to be. And as soon as she said, ‘I want to do it,’ I said, ‘OK, I’m coming over to your house and we’re having a really frank conversation.’”
The movie, Jennifer Lawrence’s last before her yearlong sabbatical, tackles everything from Russian-American relations and espionage to sex as power — themes that continue to make headlines in the daily news cycle.
Jason Matthews , a former CIA officer with 33 years of service under his belt and author of the “Red Sparrow” novel, said he is not surprised by our current state of affairs.
“I think the Cold War never ended. We’re going through a new Cold War. A second Cold War,” Matthews said. “All the squabbling in Washington — it doesn’t matter if you’re Republican or Democrat — all the squabbling, all the partisanship plays right into the hand of the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin. If we can’t get together, if we can’t make our government run smoothly, the Russians are just clapping their hands.”
While the plot of “Red Sparrow” is fictionalized, it’s based on “the things I did in the CIA, the people I knew” Matthews says. He met with Joel Edgerton to help him wrap his head around what it means to handle a clandestine source.
One of Edgerton’s takeaways was how difficult it would be to date within the field.
“[My biggest takeaway] was just how complicated it would be to have an interpersonal dating-style relationship with somebody if you were in the field. That fact that you would have to report any of those kinds of interactions with your bosses,” Edgerton said. “That seems antithetical to the process of meeting another human being — bringing a third party involved. Right? Like if you’re dating someone, you don’t introduce them to your parents for a while. So when you’re dating and you have to report it to your bosses, it just sounds weird to me.”

But she was more worried about her accent.
Jennifer Lawrence has revealed she's no longer afraid to take on risky roles, after playing a sexy Russian spy in Red Sparrow .
During the premiere of the thriller, she spoke to Entertainment Tonight about no longer having the fear or insecurity that she once had.
She said that the whole crew on set made her feel very comfortable and because of that, she probably got too relaxed and made everyone else feel awkward.
"Everybody made me feel so comfortable that I probably at a certain point started making everybody else uncomfortable. Because I'd be like 'I don't want the robe. I'm hot. I'm eating.' Everybody's like, 'She needs to cover up.'"
During the film, there is one scene in which Lawrence is completely naked. It's a nightmare sequence which finds her nude in front of a classroom full of people. But Lawrence has insisted she'll now take on any role where the character speaks to her personally and won't avoid them because of nudity.
She said: "So you know I'm always gonna take on roles for the same reason, you know, the character speaks to me and the director and the story. But I'm no longer gonna let that be a factor in my decision making."
She even added that it wasn't the nudity that scared her the most during filming, but the Russian accent she had to learn.
Red Sparrow , directed by Hunger Games ' Francis Lawrence, is in cinemas on March 1 in the UK and March 2 in the US.

Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about one of her biggest concerns about doing her first nude scene: the appearance of her nipples.
The 27-year-old actress made the candid confession during an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres's talk show on Friday, admitting that she was so focused on how her nipples might look that she actually berated the crew after they made the set too warm.
After the 60-year-old TV host asked why Jennifer had chosen to take the plunge and do her first nude scene after vowing never to go naked on camera, the actress not only explained her motivation, but shared why she was so concerned about her 'nipples looking huge' as a result of the hot temperatures.
Scene: Jennifer Lawrence appeared on the Ellen Show on Friday where she opened up about her first ever naked scene in new movie, Red Sparrow
First: Despite saying that she would never go naked in a movie, the 27-year-old actress got fully nude in the action-packed movie, and revealed she was worried about how her nipples looked
Ellen opened up the conversation by gushing about Jen's new action-packed spy movie Red Sparrow, which was officially released on March 2, noting that she and her wife Portia de Rossi loved the thriller.
She then questioned Jennifer about her nude scene, asking what it was that had made the actress decide to strip down on camera for the very first time, after she previously insisted that she would never go naked in a movie.
'I think I finally just got hot,' Jennifer laughed, while sipping on a rum cocktail and laughing.
Then, more serious this time Jen shared, 'To me it was really just an amazing script and story.
'I loved the character and I just didn't want to miss out on it because of like my weird insecurities so I did it and it was really lovely.'
Cold: Jennifer (pictured) said the weather was freezing in Hungary and she was always complaining about being cold so the crew made the room of the sex scene warm and toasty
Amazing: Even though they were trying to be nice, Jen recalls walking into the warm room and screaming, 'What are you doing with this heat! My nipples are going to be huge!'
Jennifer continued saying what made her feel much more comfortable was the fact that the entire crew was from Hunger Games which she thinks made it better.
She explained the scenario of the day she had to film her naked sex scene saying the crew were all really nice and they all went in at three in the morning to set up heaters.
Pointing out the fact that the weather was freezing 'because it was a very Hungarian winter' she admitted that she was always complaining about being cold.
So, the day of she finally gets to the set and walks into the room and said it was so warm and toasty when all of a sudden she started screaming in an aggressive manner, 'What are you doing with this heat! My nipples are going to be huge!'
Her an Ellen started hysterically laughing and Jen said that that everyone started freaking out when she was yelling and they didn't know what she wanted.
She joked that the crew said, 'Jen you can't diet anymore.'
While the actress was able to joke around with Ellen, the fact that she went naked for the movie was a much bigger deal to her than anyone else realizes.
Jen shared in the March issue of Vanity Fair that because going nude was her choice and not someone else's, she felt 'empowered.'
All smiles: JLaw sat down with Ellen DeGeneres as she sipped on a rum cocktails and answered all of the talk show host's questions
Not only did she speak up recently, saying being nude 'empowered' her, she also addressed all of the backlash she received when she chose to wear her gorgeous black Versace dress with no coat in the cold.
People were bashing JLaw for stepping out in her black gown which showed off a ton of cleavage and she had some choice words for those people on a recent radio interview on The Howard Stern Show .
She said of taking pictures without a coat at the London photocall, 'I saw the cameras for the photo call and I walked my bare a** out there for the photos nobody took a coat from me.'
Continuing her amazing rant she said, 'It was a fabulous dress I wasn't going to cover it up in a f*****g coat.
'Also, I shoot in below freezing weather in record-breaking winters, I can stand outside for 90 seconds in a dress.'
The actress even went so far to say, 'All these people trying to be feminist, you're not you're loud, you're annoying, you have no point and what you also do, you make people hate a movement.'

Haters: Jen had some choice words for those people who bashed her outfit even though she walked in wearing a coat (pictured) on a recent radio interview on The Howard Stern Show
Aside from Jennifer talking about her nipples, she also hilariously brought up that she has an alter ego named Gail that only comes out when drinking rum so Ellen brought out a full tray of cocktails after hearing that.
Jennifer pretended not to be phased by the plethora of alcoholic beverages but quickly picked up the pink rum punch and gulped it down.
Jennifer laughed and told Ellen, 'I'm really not this big of a drinker. But when I'm on a press tour I drink a lot.'
The actress went on to reveal that Gail enjoys putting her life in danger and explained a time she jumped in shark-infested waters while on vacation with friends.
Jennifer said, 'Gail is lovely. She has a heart of gold.'
Ellen then showed the audience a picture of a bikini-clad Jennifer in her alter ego form smiling awkwardly at the camera and JLaw joked, 'There she is. There's my girl.'
Explaining why her face looked like that she said, 'Look I was trying to look cute I was getting photographed with all my girlfriends on the beach.'
