I'm curious what do yon guys think should we see Sonja naked instead of the cheesy ways they hidden her ? One of the main reasons why I think we never see her nude is due to Luke. I look at their other leading ladies they have no issues. Why do you guys think this is ?
She's had rear nudity in some books. And let's be real, when a character wears a thong there's not much difference anyway.
As for other, more graphic nude depictions, what would the point be? People already accuse Red Sonja, Vampirella etc. of being jerk-off comics, which I think is really misguided and disregards the difference between fantasy titillation and full-on pornography. If Red Sonja starts to have nude depictions, it would be harder to argue that it's the former rather than the latter.
Fair point. I dislike that argument because what about the male characters who just where nothing but underwear or Nightwing
I guess it depends on the circumstances. I kinda liked how Amy Chu presented Sonja as somebody for whom nudity was no big deal. When Max took her back to his apartment and left the room for a sec, he came back in and she's just there stark naked and trying to work the TV. I thought that was hilarious. Same as when she just blithely changed out of her armour in Spike's bar in front of everyone.
I would be interested to see what exact criteria are needed to be met to increase the maturity rating of a comic. From what I can see, most or all of my Red Sonja issues are labeled as “Teen+”, including what I would consider my most ‘racy’ issue, Red Sonja 1984. That issue includes a “full frontal” of Sonja sleeping in the nude, turned and positioned in such a way that we do not see her crotch or nipples but plenty of surrounding skin. I don’t know the context of what you’ve referenced in Invincible Red Sonja #7, but if the case is as blatant as that then my guess would be anything fully revealing would require a Mature/Adult rating, and would thus be less marketable / comic-book stores might have a harder time selling it.
It’s the same reason movie studios go “can we lose that F-bomb here, that suggestive joke there…” A PG-13 movie casts a wider net than R, and can make more money.
I definitely recall seeing Sonja's butt in all its glory in a bathing scene in 'Red Sonja vs Thulsa Doom', which was co-written by Lieberman, so I doubt he's all that opposed.
Like I said below, it depends on the circumstances. Amy Chu threw in a few scenes that showed that basically Sonja didn't care about nudity and that was hilarious when you saw the reactions from the natives of 21st century New York City. They were aghast but Sonja herself just felt more comfortable that way. Same with 'Red Sonja 1982' when she went back to the woman's department and was seen blithely sleeping stark naked in a stranger's bed.
There's been a couple of times when Sonja's been bathing in a pool and has been attacked - I'm relatively fine with that because it shows that somebody's going after the She-Devil when she's unarmed and is at her most vulnerable. It happened in 'Red Sonja vs Thulsa Doom', early in Eric Trautmann's run and most recently in 'Invincible Red Sonja', although as Moktira pointed out, it was a bit of a head-scratcher why she felt she had time to bathe then when her friends needed rescuing.
The odd scene here and there with her privates covered up by conveniently-positioned rubble or vases or whatever is funny but I do think it's starting to get a bit overdone in 'Invincible Red Sonja.' It's funny to see how wound up some people get about it though.
Above all, I wouldn't want Red Sonja to turn into something like 'Axa', where the creative team are always looking for an exuse to get her kit off for no reason. It's an action and adventure comic at the end of the day
When I want to see full nudity in comics I am picking Drunna. I don't need porno Sonja, thank you very much.

Nudity should be shown if it's available and not out of nowhere. If not, oh well. It's funny when they censor Sonja in certain panels depending on the artist but it won't keep me awake at night.
Yeah, it's funny when it's done occasionally. Jimmy and Amanda have chucked in an obscured nude scene in virtually every issue but I think they're known for doing that and there's a lot of humour in their series. I wouldn't want 'Red Sonja' to end up like 'Belladonna' or those other low-budget sexploitation-type comics.
I can only think of two instances of Sonja "nudity" (inverted commas as they're barely anything), the first is in Marvel's "Ring of Ikribu" (Savage Sword of Conan #230 ) but it could be torn cloth covering her exposed breast ( coloured in Classic Red Sonja Remastered #1 and also collected again in the Further Adventures of Red Sonja). The second is in Dynamite's Red Sonja V1 #3 where you can see the outline of her nipple.
We see Sonja have sex a few times (eg. V1 #33, Queen Sonja #13) but it doesn't show anything. Unfortunately Dynamite give stupid cheesecake bath scenes with surprising frequency, not just Invincible Red Sonja #7 (and maybe #3), Amy Chu's run had one in maybe issue 2, there's one in V1 at some stage and "Thulsa Doom" has a stupidly long one involving a fight while bathing between her and Thulsa Doom, Queen Sonja has one I think and I'm sure there's many many more I've forgotten.
As to whether there should be nudity is a different question. Those bath scenes are usually unnecessary, even if it didn't bother covering her nipples. If it is a sex scene however, I don't think it's necessary to not show anything but again, the scene should be important for the plot and not just ham-fisted in.
No, we shouldn't. Sonja is a warrior goddess beyond reach of ordinary male. That is why she is so special and magnificent. Sonja is that kind of woman whom you adore, desire, dream of being with, or just to see her naked, but you simply can’t. Never. She is a teаse. Stripping her completely would kill the magic.
Rather have a superbly drawn book/ great story than T&A.
Nude Red Sonja would be great! Especially if drawn by a great artist, like Carlos Gomez!
Do any Dynamite books show nudity? I noticed the vampirella valentines special had a panel where Vampirella was clearly drawn nude but had the same terrible edit to try to hide her lady bits as the most recent issue of invincible Red Sonja.
Not full on but we clearly don't have the same situation going on like Invincible Red Sonja 7.
Ye i thought that issue was too cheesy, kinda of made the issue its self feel more childish. Like they were trying to tell a joke that missed the landing.
I think only Dejah Thoris has shown nudity under Dynamite, and that was on the covers. But that seems to have stopped with her more recent runs.
Vampirella showed some nudity in her very early issues before Dynamite owned her but once she joined Dynamite that stopped.
As for Purgatori and Chaos i dont think they ever showed nudity.
Same for Sonja, she's gone near nude sometimes but never crossing the line.
Not sure why when most of them all wear skimpy outfits in the first place. I'm not saying all of a sudden they should start throwing nudity around all over the place.
But i don't see the harm of maybe having an alt nude cover like Dejah had or nudity in the stories if it's genuinely called for.
I've read other comics in the past with the same age rating as these comics and they have from time to time shown nudity thay includes breasts, so i don't think they avoid it due to age.
Maybe it's this like you mentioned that prevents it with Sonja, but not sure why the other characters can't.
A lot of the appropriateness depends on how we even classify nudity in comic books, i.e. subject portrayal being pornographic vice erotica. The demarcation wasn't all that clear in the age of underground comic books, direct sale magazines and even those comics that did not require the comics code back in the day. I'm thinking of a One-Shot that John Byrne did back in the 70s. It was tasteful and probably set the precedent for the rest of his career. The title escapes me.
Honestly, I think Sonja would lose something if there was full force nudity in her depictions, as expectations would change and story quality might drift. It's a slippery slope for sure.
Byrne did a racy She-Hulk graphic novel ... I'm not sure if that's the one you're thinking of. There was one panel of Shulkie's bare backside and in another, her nipples were showing through a shirt shredded by machine gun fire. However, there was a panel at the end with Jen lying in bed with her boyfriend Wyatte Wingfoot and I think Byrne had to change it. No nipples or anything in that panel but a lot of side-boob.
I don't mean I want it but I notice many claiming invincible 7 is way too Cheesy and we could have gotten more
