Based upon the erotic drama series that broadcast on the U.S. Showtime cable television network, The Red Shoe Diaries - 1992 is a movie by filmmaker Zalman King, written by King and Patricia Louisianna Knop. The story follows Jake Winters, played by David Duchovny as a young architect and city planner and his fiancee, successful interior designer Alex, played by Brigitte Baiko. At first, the couple seem to reciprocate their love for each other by all accounts. Suddenly, however, Alex inexplicably commits suicide. The tragedy takes its toll on Jake, who has a very hard time adjusting without her. He finds her diary and as he reads it, discovers that his fiancee had been keeping a secret from him. She had been having a torrid affair with a construction worker named Tom. The story narrates through the eyes of Alex using the words in her diary as she describes her desperation being torn between her fiance and her lover. Alex chronicles each relationship in painful detail for Jake. He ultimately decides to go out in search of the macho mystery man, to try to ease some of his angst. He also believes that Tom, played by Billy Worth, may have had something to do with the ultimate demise of Alex. Drama ensues as Jake goes through a series of machinations to find Tom. Using Hitchcock-like suspense, the story presents a background using seductive red and black tones. Jake finds Tom through a pair of red shoes that he sold her. Jake becomes confused about Tom, as he had worked mostly as a construction worker. As it happens, Tom also moonlighted as a shoe salesman, which is when he met Alex. After he sold the red shoes to her she and Tom began their affair for an unspecified time period. Jake winds up having a violent altercation with Tom that leaves both men with no emotional resolution to the loss of Alex. In an effort to understand what happened in his love life and women in general, Jake places anonymous advertisements in newspapers, encouraging them to confess their innermost erotic secrets to through their letters. The movie was nominated for two CableACE Awards. Marc Reshovsky won in the category for Direction of Photography and Lighting Direction in a Dramatic or Theatrical Special, Movie or Miniseries. James Gavin Bedford and Heidi Scharfe were nominated in the category for Editing a Dramatic Special, Series or Theatrical Special, Movie or Mini-Series.
