“A gem of a historical novel…I found myself wishing the story didn’t have to end…recommended for fans of early 20th-century history, and for those who wonder what followed the fall of the Romanovs.” ―Historical Novel Society “Elizabeth Blackwell’s fascinating Red Mistress is the story of Nadia Shulkina, who must reinvent herself in the wake of the Russian Revolution when her family loses everything. With breathtaking historical detail and vividly drawn characters, Red Mistress is a compelling tale, a perfect blend of daring, intrigue, and romance. I loved this story!” ―Jane Healey, author of The Beantown Girls and The Saturday Evening Girls Club “This story of loss and survival, romance and danger, is absolutely captivating.” ―Megan Chance, author of A Drop of Ink and Inamorata

I am so glad I found this book in Kindle Unlimited with the audio included. Sara Zimmerman is one of my favorite narrators. Her ability to bring the characters to life is astounding and added to my enjoyment. I was fascinated by this tale set in Russia during the revolution there. If you enjoy historical fiction as much as I do, then you'll love Red Mistress Happy reading and listening!

This heart wrenching tale about pre-revolutionary Russia and the subsequent rise of the cold-war follows the members of a wealthy noble family who suffered greatly. Their extreme losses during the Russian Revolution and the tragedies of their country and of their family are portrayed in such detail that readers can feel their suffering. Memories are described such that a reader can understand compassionately what happens when families are torn apart by an ideological, a political and an economic uprising. Lives requiring deceit by spies who must lie to survive became real in this grim yet hopeful tale.

I like historical fiction and have not read much about the Russian revolution, therefore, I found this book interesting. This book was easy to read before Falling asleep at night because it did not have a long list of characters nor a very complicated plot. Still, it held my interest and I think will be an easy book to discuss in our book group.

I was not very familiar with the events leading up to the Russian Revolution, so this book caught my eye. I enjoyed hearing the story from a young girl's point of view. The complexities of life during that time were described well. Overall, I enjoyed the read. The only thing I didn't like was the title. I feel like the author could have been so much more creative with that.

I enjoyed reading this book and also liked the fact that the author took from history regarding the elite of Russia and their downfall. It must have been an incredibly awful time for the aristocracy to at one time be revered and at another being less than mongrels. Those in power could snuff you out on a whim. A tragic time. But the book kept my interest and moved along at a good pace.

What happens after the revolution, when the world is turned upside down? Nadia survives. Not a heroine, not a villain, but something in between - she's a human being and a character that the reader cares about, as we see her make tremendously difficult choices. Great setting too - Russia pre- and post revolution, and Paris of the 1920s. Totally convincing historical fiction.

I found this book so interesting. My grandparents came to the United States from Russia. Both of them had passed away before I was born. It was great to have a glimpse of why they left Russia. They had gone to England and boarded a ship from there to the United States. They lived in New York.

The historical perspective was enlightening and the characters kept me engaged! I am glad that I read it will definitely read additional books by Elizabeth Blackwell!

A fictional story based on historical facts: brilliantly created and credibly intriguing.

A novel to hold one's attention to the last page. Loved it. it opens up a world of reversal through the tide of changing values and revolution. Tears at the heart and yet brings reality to the value of equality against hierarchy through birth and a reordering of the pecking order that Russia's Revolution, at the time of the murder of the last Tzar and Tzarine of Russia and their children, the Bolsheviks, Lenin and Stalin through the birth of a new establishment of the State. Great novel.

Probably been too generous with four A good read slightly different storyline Characters where good Story was unusual for that era

Found it intriguing from start to finish really enjoyed

In the wake of the Russian Revolution, a determined young woman breaks with her past to become a spy in 1920s Paris, where shadowy intrigues and a dangerous romance put her loyalty to the test.
In the spring of 1914, Nadia Shulkina, the daughter of Russian aristocrats, looks toward a bright future. She has no premonitions of war, let alone the revolution that is about to destroy her comfortable world.
Her once-noble family is stripped of every possession, and more terrible losses soon follow. To save what’s left of her family and future, Nadia marries a zealous Bolshevik in an act of calculated reinvention.
When she agrees to work undercover for the Soviets in 1920s Paris, Nadia is drawn into a beautiful yet treacherous world of secrets and deceit. Beset by conflicting loyalties and tested by a forbidden love affair, she becomes embroiled in a conspiracy that ends with a shocking murder. What chances will she take to determine her own fate?
