Rebecca Northan will take the stage at The Grand theatre over the next three weeks for her show Blind Date.
But just who will be co-staring in the production isn't decided until minutes before show time.
Host of London Morning , Julianne Hazlewood, went to The Grand Theatre to speak with Northan about her one-of-a-kind show.
This interview has been edited for length, clarity and context.
Julianne Hazlewood: What's your game plan before the show starts?
Rebecca Northan: We start our show in the lobby unlike most performances. Myself and the rest of the cast and crew mingle with everybody to get an idea of who's in the audience, to get a sense of who might be willing to go on stage with us that night. And if they have a wife or girlfriend we find out if the partner is also willing to let their gentleman go for the evening.
JH: Is there anything you and your team look for when you are in the lobby beforehand?
RN: We look for someone you would want to hang out with. It's a really simple philosophy. We always say if that was a cocktail party, who would you want to spend time with? JH: That is simple. What happens from there?
RN: Well they don't know for sure if it's them until they hear their name called from the stage. And then the show starts. And then we're together for 90 minutes.
JH: How does that happen? Because the whole thing is improv.
RN: Well, there's a structure to the show so we can deliver a minimum amount of entertainment and it can be repeatable in a certain sense. The other thing the structure does is it lets me really be in the moment with that person. As opposed to the world of pure improvisation where we're always thinking where are we going with this. That can make it hard to be in the moment, so the structure helps.
But in a lot of ways, it's no different from a regular blind date. How does anybody have a blind date? You don't know what you're going to talk about or you don't know what will happen. You hope it goes well. That's basically how blind date the show works as well.
JH: Have there been any times when someone has zigged and you didn't know quite which way to zag? It was totally unexpected?
RN: Oh there have been many times, many many times. But I delight in those moments. I love being surprised by people. It happens a lot actually. But that's the thing that keeps us coming back and doing the show over and over again. We're getting close to having done over 700 performances. If it was the same every time, I think we would have quit a long time ago.
RN: I don't know if the approach has changed so much as it's become more refined and a little more crystallized. So I think we'd been doing the show for four or five months when our stage manager at the time asked, what are we doing? What's the underpinning philosophy? We had a lot of discussion, at the end of it we kind of settled on our core belief of everyone is lovable. And what we do in Blind Date is we sit with that stranger until we figure out what it is about that person that is lovable. They usually reveal it themselves pretty quickly because everyone is fascinating.
JH: You've had so many dates by this point.
RN: So many dates. All of them professional though (laughs). I've never been on a blind date in my own personal life.
JH: You've never been on a blind date?!
RN: No, I don't think I could handle it in real life!
JH: I feel like you have good practice though now (laughs).
RN: I do, I have great practice! But it's a lot different when I'm not wearing a clown nose.
JH: So you're wearing a clown nose, what's that about?
RN: Well the clown nose does a bunch of things. It's the constant reminder that we're here to play and it also gives permission for the play. So the clown can say and do things that Rebecca maybe wouldn't do. And it's a constant reminder for whoever the guest is that night that don't worry, this lady's not going to try to come home with you at any point.
JH: Going back to the beginning, how did you come up with the concept?
RN: I don't really feel like I can take full credit, because the ideas arrived fully formed and it kind of thunked into my head. So I don't really know where it came from to be honest. I was asked to create a 10-minute piece. I didn't know what to do, then I had one of those light bulb moments.
RN: It did. And because of my training as an improvisor, I didn't really question it. I just said yes, I think I know what we'll do and we'll try it. That was the 10-minute version and I did that for the whole summer and then was left with the question of what if we really take the time to get to know this person. And I think that's part of its success. It's kind of fun to get to learn about a stranger.
JH: What are some of the interesting things you've learned about people?
RN: I was surprised to discover a deep well of empathy for the male experience that came out of blind date that I hadn't really considered before. But I've sat across the table from so many men. You can see that they're nervous. The audience can't tell. It made me realize how much pressure there is on men on a regular basis to appear like they're okay and that they're not phased by things and they're not nervous and that they've got it all going on. I think we've got a little more room as women to say oh I'm so nervous right now or I'm not sure how to proceed. We have that space. So my heart kind of broke. Just admit that you're nervous. It's not going to kill you. In fact, it takes great strength to be vulnerable. But that's not necessarily what we teach men. But anyway, we work very hard to take stress off the guys.
RN: We're kind to them. We're not the kind of improv show that pulls them up on stage, makes fun of them for five minutes and has them sit back down. We're really interested in getting to know this person.
JH: The nature of performance is that everyone will have a different experience. But what do you hope people take away from it — the feeling that they have walking out the door at the end of the night?
RN: I hope that they see another human from a place of empathy and curiosity. I also hope that they walk away asking themselves I wonder if I could do something like that or am I capable. If that guy, if that accountant who's never been on stage before could do that, what could I do? We also hear that from the dates themselves. We've seen single guys be given phone numbers by women in the audience who say I've been so enraptured by you, and you're just so fun and wonderful. And we just want everyone to feel good and fall in love with a stranger.
