The rear naked choke is a crucial attack, it involves the term ‘rear’ because it is applied from behind of the opponent and the word naked comes from the fact that unlike other techniques it does not include a training uniform or an object to apply it. If it is executed correctly, it is the ending point in a fight.
This choke is also referred to as the “King of all chokes”. Many of the UFC submission triumphs have been rear naked chokes . This hold is one of the best submissive holds in the jiu-jitsu arsenal due to the positions that it can be applied. For an instance, suppose that the rear chokehold has been applied on an opponent, at that very moment, the opponent has no position or moves to attack. Only in the extremely rare case is it possible to break the lock after a couple of hard fought tries. However, it gets even harder on an experienced grappler.
The rear naked choke has been around since the early years of Jiu-Jitsu. The Hadaka jime translates for ‘naked choke’ as to explain this choke does not require the use of GI-kimono. The popularity of the rear naked choke in MMA and Jiu-Jitsu is attributed to the Gracie family , who popularized the choke in no holds barred fights. The association between the choke and the lion killing capabilities can be dated back to as far as the early 1500’s. It seems as though the name was mata-leao only started being used in Jiu-Jitsu and vale-to-do in 1960’s decades.
This variant is also considered as the blood choke because it stops the blood flow to the brain through the carotid arteries. When executed correctly it can cause unconsciousness in a few seconds. The following is the description to perform it perfectly:
A variation that involves clasping of the hands, this is also known by “Palm to Palm”. It allows more pressure to be applied to the neck. It modifies the original move but the idea is to put pressure on airway and stop opponents breathing.
This choke is done from back control and leg placement has two variations, standard back control with hooks or body lock. The body lock is executed by placing one of your legs on the opponent’s chest. Then place the leg on his own shin creating a figure four with legs. This allows you to limit opponent’s movement and stay close to him.
The rear choke hold effectively trips the jugular vein, the greatly stops the flow of blood from the head or brain to the heart. This causes unconsciousness sooner and the opponent begins to fade.
When pressure is applied to the opponent’s neck, the heart will gradually reduce the heartbeat speed which will cause lesser blood flow from the heart. This choke could lead to a malfunction of the flowing of the blood towards the heart that may or may not be fixed ever. The time of the pressure is proportional to the damage of cerebral anoxia, which means cutting off the oxygen supply to the brain.
The more the pressure applied, the lesser the oxygen supplied to the brain. Significant anatomic differences exist between the healthy participants of these studies and children, the elderly and those with Down syndrome, differences that dramatically after the safety of the choke. A rear naked choke is a type of attack found in many martial arts disciplines. It is executed from behind, where the attacker uses his arms to cut off the blood flowing through an opponent’s carotid artery . Combat disciplines that teach versions of the rear naked choke include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu , Judo , MMA, professional wrestling , and U.S. Army Combatives. Other names for the technique include hadaka jime, lateral vascular neck restraint, mata leao, and sleeper hold.
There are two ways to execute a rear naked choke. In both, the attacker is positioned behind the opponent. In the first method, the attacking arm is placed around an opponent’s neck so that the bicep pushes against one artery and the forearm pushes against the other. The hand of the attacking arm is then placed against the bicep of the non-attacking arm. The non-attacking arm’s hand is then placed behind the opponent’s head or neck. To complete the choke, the elbows are pressed together and the opponent’s head or neck is pushed forward.
The second method of executing a rear naked choke has many similarities to the first. The attacking arm is placed around the opponent’s neck with the bicep against one artery. The attacking arm’s radius bone or wrist bones are then pressed against the artery on the other side. The non-attacking arm then clasps the attacking arm’s hand. The choke is completed when the attacker simultaneously pulls his attacking arm together and also pushes and twists with the non-attacking arm.
The rear naked choke is a type of blood choke. Blood chokes work by cutting off the blood flow to the brain . When the brain in deprived of oxygen -rich blood by such a technique, a person quickly passes out. This occurs in roughly eight seconds when the blood choke is properly applied, but can be faster or slower depending on the individual.
The rear naked choke is generally considered safe when applied in controlled settings and for extremely short amounts of time; the technique, however, can still be lethal. If applied for too long, the recipient will die due to lack of blood flow to the brain. If applied improperly, the blood choke can become an airway choke, possibly resulting in a crushed trachea. Still, the rear naked choke is used daily in martial arts schools around the world; serious injuries caused by it are rare.
The rear naked choke came to mainstream notice from three primary sources. The sleeper hold became a staple of professional wrestling early in its televised history, and was easily noticed by fans of the sport. IN addition, police officers are often trained in the use of the lateral vascular neck restraint. Finally, Royce Gracie used the rear naked choke in the first UFC, and it has been known to MMA fighters and fans of the sport ever since.
When I took some Brazilian jiu jitsu classes a few years ago, the instructor showed us the rear naked choke. I think he actually called it hidaka jime. Anyway, he used me as a "victim" for the demonstration. He got his arm around my neck from behind, but I could still breathe. I felt him tighten up his bicep on one side, and I started to panic a little. I got very dizzy, but I felt like I could still step out of it if I kicked him in the right place.

Then he pressed his fist into the other side of my neck and it was like someone turned out the lights. I was conscious one second and gone the next. I don't know how long I was actually out, but the next thing I remember was my instructor slapping the side of my face and pulling me up to my feet. I was still woozy, but not out of commission.
I saw a wrestler use a rear naked choke, or sleeper hold, on another wrestler when I was a kid. It scared me to death, because the victim just fell over like he was dead. He didn't wake up for a while, and the announcer said the winning wrestler would have to do some kind of move to snap him out of it. I think he rubbed his hands on the victim's sternum or something. Supposedly if he didn't do it, the other wrestler could have died. I'm not sure if that was true or just wrestling hype.

All I know is I would hate to have a choke hold like that done to me. Just the idea of passing out would scare me to death.

The rear naked choke (Mata Leao in Portuguese) is one of the the most popular chokes used in grappling. It is an incredibly powerful technique that has the potential to render an opponent unconscious within a few seconds. As a technique it is taught in a number of different martial arts such as Jiu Jitsu , Judo, Sambo, and Catch wrestling. It is also consistently the most popular submission used in MMA.
The word “naked” refers to the fact that the hold does not require the use of a Kimono or Gi training uniform.
The Rear Naked Choke is a blood choke. This means that it works by restricting bloodflow to the brain.
When the attacker has the choke secured and they begin to apply pressure, the opponents jugular vein is compressed. In addition the carotid arteries on either side of the neck begin to narrow. As this happens blood begins to fall which may result in the opponent feeling flushed in the face. As the bloodflow falls below critical level the opponent will starts lose consciousness.
Blood levels rise again as soon as the choke is released which usually results in regaining of consciousness after a few seconds.
There are a number of different ways to set up and finish a rear naked choke. The choke has two main variations. In one version the attacker’s arm encircles the opponent’s neck and they then grab their own bicep to tighten the choke. In the second version, the attacker joins their hands together and squeezes as opposed to grabbing their own bicep.
The first version is the most common form of the choke. Apart from the final grip many of the other details are the same for every variation of the choke. Once back control has been secured these are the main general steps of the RNC:
When applied properly, unconsciousness occurs in less than 10 seconds and recovery from the choke is just as quick.
As already mentioned there are many variations of the RNC. The effectiveness of the choke often depends on how you adapt the technique for your own body shape and size. Jiu Jitsu practitioners such as Marcelo Garcia and Andre Galvao have both mastered the choke and have their own way of applying it. By studying these athletes and their interpretation of the choke we can increase our own understanding of the technique.
Another method he does is gripping the shoulder blade. Once you get the choke hand in you grab the shoulder blade like a bird perching on your shoulder. It’s very hard to remove the arm after it’s set in and you lock the choke behind their head to finish it. We can see Marcelo going through these steps in this video.
There is always little tweaks you can make in your technique to improve how you apply the rear naked choke no matter which grip you use.
Below is a detailed list of important tips that will make your rear naked choke game more effective and give you a near hundred percent finish rate when you get their back go for this choke.
The steps to do the choke are very simple to the point where people with no grappling training know how to perform the submission hold. However even the most skilled and experienced grapplers still make errors when applying this choke. In many ways it is a simple choke but their are many little intricacies to learn if you want it to pull it off against a high level opponent. The little details of the choke can help you to perfect it over time . Before we get into set-ups and tips to make the RNC better, here are some of the most common errors that are made when applying the choke.
