Every rom-com needs its villain — and often, it's the significant other who is so obviously wrong for them compared to the hero or heroine they just met.
In the case of Love in the Villa, which hit Netflix on Thursday, that arrives in the form of Cassie (Laura Hopper), the status obsessed fiancée of Brit, Charlie ( Tom Hopper ). Despite a growing connection with Julia ( Kat Graham ), who accidentally double-booked a vacation in an Italian villa he is already staying in, Charlie has obligations elsewhere.
Will he realize Cassie is all wrong for him and Julia is the girl of his dreams? (If you've ever watched a rom-com before, you probably know the answer).
But this time the casting came with a fun twist because the woman behind Cassie, Laura Hopper, is star Tom Hopper's actual wife. In fact, it was Laura who found the script and encouraged Tom to do the project.
"She tends to go through a lot of the scripts that get sent my way," he tells EW. " She was like, 'I just read this really great script called Love in the Villa . It's a really sweet rom-com and you should read it.' I read it and I agreed; I thought it was really brilliant."
"Laura, also being an actress," he continues, "was like, 'Oh, I love one of these roles as well — the role of Cassie.'"
Once Hopper was signed onto the project, he mentioned to writer-director Mark Steven Johnson ( Christopher Robin ) that Laura was interested — Johnson gave her an audition, and she got the part.
"I love working with my wife," adds Hopper. "She's so funny. She's a very good comedic actress. What was very bizarre is I break up with her in the movie. As we were doing it I was like, 'This is really strange playing out this scene.' She's so different from that in real life, but she loves those character, comedic roles. It was such a blessing for us because we've never really done that before. We've acted in the same things, but we never actually acted opposite each other."
After quarantining with a bout of COVID-19 following their arrival in Verona (their own, less romantic version of Love in the Villa ), the first scene Hopper shot with his wife was the massive dinner scene where he realizes that Cassie is totally wrong for him.
It wasn't just a love-fest for the Hoppers either. Kat Graham, who stars as Julia, also adored working with Laura. "I don't know who I was more obsessed with, her or him," she laughs. I love Laura so much. She's got to be one of the funniest people I've ever met. Every time we had a scene together I would get giddy because she's a fierce female and so freaking funny without even trying. There were moments where I could not look at her in the scene."
Love in the Villa is now available on Netflix.

From Wife Swap and Seeking Sister Wife to My Five Wives, Trading Spouses, and more, find out which reality TV shows are on par with Sister Wives.
TLC's flagship reality TV series Sister Wives is set to premiere its 16th season on Nov. 21, 2021. As fans await an update on the current state of the Brown family, all eyes turn to the fragile relationship between Kody and his first wife, Meri, especially considering the former's recent medical diagnosis.
Of course, Sister Wives joins a rich reality TV show tradition of exploring legal polygamy in Utah, as well as free-spirited polyamorous romances and marriages outside of the beehive state. If such a subject happens to be appealing, do wise and tune into the various reality TV shows that boast a similar premise of polyamory.
Following the success of Sister Wives , TLC rolled out My Five Wives three years later. The show chronicles the lives of Brady Williams and his five spouses and a combined 24 children, all of whom live together under a single roof near Salt Lake City.
Just like Sister Wives , the Williams' invite viewers into their home to offer a candid look at their so-called controversial lifestyle, which slowly reveals their tradition-bucking progressivism. However, overwhelmed by the sheer number of children to care for, a host of marital and parental issues ensue in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.
Bearing a similar namesake, TLC's Seeking Sister Wife is a spinoff show that peers into the lives of three distinct families in various phases of the dating process. The goal for each couple is to prepare for and warmly welcome a new fiance into their household, often leading to jealousy, rage, mistrust, and heated rows among all three participants.
With three seasons so far and counting, the show has all the hallmarks of what makes Sister Wives appealing. It's cringy and fascinating at once, full of both scripted and natural drama, and tries to really capture the appeal of living in a committed polygamous kinship.
Produced by National Geographic with a very serious tone, Polygamy, USA takes an eye-opening look at Mormon fundamentalists living a polyamorous life in Centennial Park, Arizona. The 6-part series is a sobering account of the Cawleys, Hammons, and Thompsons, all of which struggle with various aspects of their religiously-informed lifestyle.
Praised for being far more educational than exploitive and entertaining than a TLC reality show, Polygamy, USA depicts the darker side of living with multiple spouses and how tenuous such living situations can really be.
Predating Sister Wives by six years, Wife Swap is a gimmicky popular reality dating show that allows two married female contestants to switch places with one another for one week. Hitched to a new husband far different from their own, they must live peaceably and acclimate themselves. After two weeks, all parties involve meet for the first time and talk out their experiences.
Somehow lasting nine seasons over 16 years, Wife Swap is an escapist fantasy that may not have the lasting consequences of some of the other polygamous reality TV series but it does manage to explore the domestic challenges of acclimating to a new environment with a new partner.
In a premise nearly identical to ABC's Wife Swap, Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy was produced by Fox in 2004. The series follows two families from different socioeconomic backgrounds with the wife trading places. The guest-mother in each family gets to decide how to spend the allocated $50,000 allowance.
With a more overtly kitschy and comedic tone than even Wife Swap, Trading Spouses is trashy reality TV at its finest, offering salacious glimpses into what goes on in the hearts and minds of philanderous lovers opened up by new experiences.
For a more harrowing cautionary tale relating to the seedier side of polygamy leaders in the church, tune in to A&E's reality TV series Escaping Polygamy . The show details the unfathomable experiences of Andrea, Jessica, and Shanell Christensen, three sisters who found the courage to flee a polygamist cult in Utah.
Praised for being authentic as can be without the need for scripted drama, the series chronicles how impressionable young minds can be psychologically manipulated in ways that seem healthy but are deeply detrimental, and how complicit the Mormon Fundamentalist and Apostolic United Brethren Church are in the process.
After Escaping Polygamy, try Escaping the Prophet . While far more scripted than the former, the latter takes the logical next step by attempting to legally bring down the cult leaders of the FLDS, the most well-organized Mormon religious organization.
The five-part TLC reality show tracks Flora Jessop, a former member of the FLDS who breaks free of her brainwashed hold and makes a determined effort to end the church's reign of influence, particularly its polygamist dogma and its reach among young people.
Boasting the reverse premise of Sister Wives is Three Wives, One Husband , a six-part docuseries set in Rockland Ranch, a polygamist community in Moab, Utah. The series follows 14 polygamist families dwelling homes carved out of the rocky edifices.
In particular, two European families attempting to live in a plural marriage are followed in the Ranch for one year, detailing their lifestyle adjustments and evolving compatibility with each other. The taboo topics are handled with compassion and honesty, making it one of the better reality TV shows about having multiple partners
When dealing with TLC shows about wives, it's impossible to avoid including the massive runaway hit series 90 Day Fiance and its countless spinoffs. While it doesn't explore polygamy per se, the show does challenge the notion of marrying the right person for the right reasons and the monumental consequences of making the wrong decision.
The show follows couples who marry each other to gain a Visa to legally reside in the U.S. for 90 days. Once the time elapses, the couples must decide if their love is true or if the international party ought to return home alone. With no hotter reality show out there, 90 Day Fiance is quickly becoming one of TLC's best shows of all time thanks to its heartwarming couples.
Extreme Love is a reality TV show that chronicles all sorts of strange taboo romances, including several instances of polyamory and plural marriage. At its core, the show challenges the notion of traditional romantic relationships and celebrates those finding love where ever and with whomever they can.
One episode of Extreme Love chronicles a pair of sister wives welcoming a new addition to the family, while another features a couple adding a third wheel to their lives as circus performers. Sister Wives fans will have an absolute blast with this show.

Fox has given a series order to “ Farmer Wants a Wife ,” a dating series based on an unscripted format developed by Fremantle. The series will follow farmers across the nation looking for love with someone who will embrace their remote country lifestyle. They will be matched with single women who’ve given up on dating in big cities and are looking for a true connection with a farmer.

The news came ahead of the network’s presentation at the Television Critics Association’s virtual summer 2022 press tour.

The original “Farmer Wants a Wife” debuted in 20018 on the U.K.’s ITV, though different versions have aired in 32 countries including Australia, France and even the U.S. for a short run on the CW in 2008.

“This is a very different format in that the contestants put themselves forward to be with these individuals. It’s tailored for for each farmer, and we know that the women are interested in them specifically,” Fox Alternative Entertainment president Rob Wade said in an interview with Variety . Some previous versions of the show have had open casting calls, where women could apply online to be matched with certain farmers.

“But what I love about it most is that it’s been around for a while — it’s got a phenomenal track record internationally,” Wade continued. Fox calls the format “the world’s most successful dating sh
