A six-year-old boy has been fatally shot in a road-rage incident Friday in Orange, California, as the killer remains at large.
While speaking to KNSD-TV on Sunday, Joanna Cloonan — the mother of the late Aiden Leos — said she was driving her son to kindergarten in Yorba Linda on Friday when an alleged white Volkswagen station wagon cut her off on State Route 55.
“As I was merging away from the carpool lane, I heard a loud noise and I heard my son say 'ow' and I pulled the car over as soon as possible, and he had been shot,” Cloonan said, adding that the bullet went through the trunk and struck her son, who was strapped into his booster seat in the rear passenger side.
“I tried to save him by calling 911, but he was losing a lot of blood... He just didn't deserve that. No one deserves that.”
She added to ABC News that she “tried to put my hand on his wounds while calling 911.”
Aiden was transported to Children's Hospital of Orange County, where he was pronounced dead.
His family told ABC News that the young boy celebrated his sixth birthday just last week.
Reported by KABC, Aiden's older sister, Alexis Cloonan, said Aiden's reported last words were, “Mommy, my tummy hurts.'”
As reported by The Associated Press, Reyes Valdivia, who along with his wife pulled over to help, said Cloonan told them she reportedly “flipped off” the car before the shooting. Reportedly, when Cloonan began transitioning to the right, the vehicle in question went behind her before one of the occupants fired the shot.
Both investigators and Cloonan believe a man and a woman were inside the Volkswagen at the time of the shooting.
In a video posted by KCAL 9, Aiden's uncle believes the man fired the shot.
When asked what she would like to say to the person who killed her son, Joanna told ABC News' Zohreen Shah on Sunday, “They took my son's life away. He was beautiful and he was kind and he was precious, and you killed him for no reason. And I want to find them and I want there to be justice to be served for my son.”
She continued, “He meant the world to me, and it feels like my life is over. That was my baby. I've never, never thought pain like this could exist.”
Cloonan was uninjured in the shooting and was the only other person in the car.
At a press conference Friday, California Highway Patrol Officer Florentino Olivera is asking anyone who drove on the freeway at the time of the incident to call the CHP's Santa Ana office at 714-567-6000.
Highway Patrol added that this incident is not connected to a string of recent BB gun shootings at cars mostly along the 91 freeway in Riverside and Orange counties.
As of this writing, a GoFundMe page created to raise funds for Aiden's funeral has amassed over $192K out of its $100K goal.
Per TooFab, the family is putting $50k of the raised amount as a reward for information on the killer.
