Marla and Kasha Slavner have seen every Gilmore Girls episode six times together.
Do you hear that? That's the sound of mothers and daughters everywhere pouring cups of coffee and ripping open packets of junk food to prepare for the four brand-new episodes of Gilmore Girls hitting Netflix soon. But one mother-daughter pair is even more excited than the rest: That's Marla and Kasha Slavner, the real-life Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Marla is a single mom to 17-year-old Kasha, but they behave more like best friends than family. 
"Having a best friend who's also your mother is pretty sweet," Kasha, 17, told Seventeen.com. 
The Toronto-based family lives about an hour from Unionville, Ontario, which serves as the backdrop for Stars Hollow in the series' pilot. Marla watched the series every week on The WB when it premiered in 2000. Kasha was just a toddler back then, but at 14, she began watching the series with her mom. Their rule was that they had to watch every episode together. In the three years since, they've seen the entire series six times. 
"I was secretly thinking, this is my life because I'm a single mother," Marla said. "But it wasn't until other people started to tell us we were like the Gilmore Girls that I started looking at it deeper. You know what? There are a lot of similarities. It's uncanny how similar we are."
Like Rory, Kasha is a voracious reader with a big heart. Her mom calls her "detail-oriented," "a list-maker," "methodical," and "thoughtful." She even has her own Lane — a super-close, artistic best friend. Rory grows up to become a reporter, and Kasha is an aspiring journalist, photojournalist, and filmmaker. 
"She's sensible," Marla said. "I don't have to worry about her, just like Lorelai didn't have to worry about Rory until, well, she met Logan."
For the record, there's no Logan in her life right now, though Kasha says that she and her mom are so close, she'd confide in her mom about a boyfriend before telling anyone else. 
"We tell each other everything," she said. "There's nothing that's really off-limits with us."
Marla, like Lorelai, is free-spirited and spontaneous — the kind of mom who dances in the grocery store and breaks out into song without caring if she knows the right lyrics. 
"I'm always telling her to behave," Kasha joked.
Marla has worn long sweaters and scarves even before they became Lorelai's wardrobe staples, and used to work in publishing for a hospitality magazine, which is fitting since fictional counterpart worked in the hospitality industry, too.
"Lorelai is a fierce, loving mother who would go to the ends of the earth for her daughter, and I have to say 'check' on that," she said. 
She means that literally, too: Last year, Marla set off on a six-month trip around the world with Kasha, reaching multiple ends of the earth. Right before they set off on their adventure, they happened to stumble across the episode where Lorelai and Rory went backpacking. It was a perfect parallel.
They both drink coffee like it comes out of an IV drip and spend every Friday night marathoning movies together and snacking on Oreos, chips, licorice, and pizza. Like their on-screen counterparts, dinners with Grandma take place around a formal dining room table.
