Although they lived 160 kilometres apart, fate brought James and Maura to the same nightclub.
They experienced an instant attraction that soon grew deeper.
‘I’d been in relationships before, but I just knew this was different,’ James told the Irish Mail. ‘After a week it felt like we’d known each other forever.’
Two years later, James and Maura welcomed their son Mark into the world. But the couple were about to discover a shocking secret.
James hadn’t seen his father Vincent since he was 10, and his relationship with his mother Carmel was so strained, Maura hadn’t even met her.
It was Christmas 2009 when James decided to try and mend fences with his mother. He visited Carmel and told her how he’d fallen in love with Maura, and they had a son. ‘She asked me who my girlfriend’s parents were – what their names were,’ James remembers. But then she got hysterical.‘She went upstairs, closed the door and wouldn’t come out,’ James explained.
A few days later, Carmel called James and broke the news that Maura’s father, Tom, was also his biological father.
Carmel and Tom had dated briefly in the 1980s. When they broke up, Carmel didn’t tell Tom she was pregnant and when James was born, she put Vincent’s name on the birth certificate. Tom found out that he had a son when James was four but they never met. By this time, he’d married and was a father to Maura.
A DNA test confirmed their worst fears – James and Maura were half brother and sister. ‘We were devastated,’ said James. ‘If someone had said to me that they were in a relationship like this, I would have said they were sickos.’
After the shock, the couple decided to stay together and share their story anonymously to warn others about putting the wrong father’s name on birth certificates.

For almost 30 years, incest dad Robin Price thought he had got away with starting a family with his own sister.
But one day, in early 2015, that all changed, as his past finally caught up with him in the most devastating manner, with a knock on the door from the police.
Price learned that his own daughter had reported him to the authorities in disgust after learning that the people she called mom and dad were half-brother and sister.
Speaking to The Sun Online, the 62-year-old admitted he never thought that day would come.
Price said: “I can’t understand why it’s all being brought up now.”
“We separated and moved on, I thought everything was fine.”
Daughter Donna Price told The Sun how the revelation ruined her memories of her childhood – and to add insult to injury she learned in the course of the court case that Robin wasn’t even her biological father.
But Donna’s two sisters and brother, who tragically died when he was just 7 years old, were all the products of the incestuous pairing.
Robin today claimed he didn’t know Donna’s mother, who we are choosing not to identify to protect her young children from a subsequent relationship, was his sister when they met.
Having grown up not knowing his mother, or even that he had a sister, he said he was raised by his father.
But his life changed when he met a young woman in a pub in the 1980s, saying the pair just “hit it off.”
He said: “When we met, we just fell in love and it snowballed from there.”
“How can you not fall in love with someone, if you meet someone and get along, you’re going to fall for them.”
“Looking at it now, then yes, it was wrong.”
“At the time, to us, that was it, we were happy, we didn’t give a monkey about what anybody else thought.”
As he spoke about the past relationship with his sister, Price’s confession of the sordid relationship came tumbling out.
Bowing his head as he tried to remember details about the sordid relationship, he said: “We met one of my aunties and she kept looking at both of us.
“She said, ‘you know something? You two are brother and sister.’
“I said, ‘oh yeah of course we are.’
Shaking his head, he added: “I felt like somebody stabbed me.
“I just couldn’t believe it when we found out.”
The pair then confronted his estranged mother, who confirmed their worst fears.
Faced with the choice of breaking off the relationship, Price claimed he decided to stay in the relationship because his sister had just learned that she was pregnant, with Donna.
Pushing the truth to the back of his mind, he said the couple then went on to have three more children together.
He said: “It went through our minds once or twice to tell the kids, but by that time, we had said ‘that’s it.’”
The strain of having his family’s murky history examined for the past two years by police before going through the courts has taken its toll on Price.
The currently unemployed warehouse worker now lives with his new partner in a small apartment in southern England.
The apartment is decorated with photographs of his new partner, with the only hint at his former life a photograph of his youngest child Steven.
The boy was only 7 years old when he died in 2001, having suffered from severe epilepsy throughout his life.
Holding up the only photograph he has of his son, Price said he had done everything to help his sister raise their child, even after they separated in 1994.
But after Steven’s death, the pair went their separate ways – only seeing each other again as they faced court over incest charges last month.
The pair, who had been reported by police by their eldest Donna, both pleaded guilty to the charges.
Robin had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, explaining: “I suppose in one respect we thought what we had done wasn’t wrong.”
But changing the plea to guilty, he said he had been “absolutely dreading” the sentencing, with fears he could be jailed for seven years.
Instead, the judge handed down five and three month suspended sentences for Price and his half-sister respectively.
Now estranged from Donna, Robin said he hoped to one day rekindle his relationship with them.
He said: “I don’t think about the relationship anymore, but I do miss the kids.”

A man is opening up about a 20 year relationship with his sister. VICE writer Jennifer Tillman interviewed a man she calls “Tom” about his romantic involvement with his sibling “Lena” over Skype. He says that Austrian authorities would take away their daughter if they found out the truth. Tillman says she changed the names of the people she interviewed to protect their identities.
Tom was introduced to Tillmann through psychotherapist Rotraud Perner . She says that being attracted to your sibling isn’t all that odd.
“From my professional experience, it’s not true that people don’t find their siblings attractive,” said psychotherapist Rotraud Perner. “Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. More importantly, relationships between siblings are defined by envy, rivalry, and admiration, along with the need to cuddle or have secrets from the rest of the world. All those things are linked to certain fantasies—some of them induced by pop culture and the media, others by their upbringing and family situation. Whether or not you make those fantasies a reality, depends on how good you are at evaluating that reality. People in incestuous relationships often lack that skill.”
Perner has been working on incest cases since 1975. She says that her patients are typically shy towards strangers. They were not allowed to meet up with other people as children because their parents are jealous or stern.
Tom and Lena grew up in a small Austrian village to what VICE describes as a normal family. Their mom was a housewife and their father a civil servant. Tom says he started to develop feelings for his sister during puberty.
Lena had her first real boyfriend at 17-years-old. Her boyfriend cheated on her after a three year relationship. She went to Tom’s room sobbing in the middle of the night. He was sleeping and woke to find her crying. He tried to console her. After a few glasses of wine Lena cuddled up to his shoulder.
The VICE article describes the scene:
In the case of Tom and Lena, their fantasy soon came to life: “I can still remember it like it happened yesterday,” says Tom. “She looked up at me and asked why other men can’t be more like me.” That’s when it happened; Tom felt sure that he and Lena were not just siblings. But before he could make a move, Lena leaned in and kissed him. Tom pushed his sister away. “What the hell are we doing?” he screamed. Lena started to cry.
A romantic relationship eventually developed between the two. They kept it secret for several years. At one point Tom became depressed and tried to kill himself. Something had to change.
They moved out of their parents’ home. They now share an apartment in Germany. Their new friends think they’re married.
In Austria, incest between siblings is punishable by up to six months in prison. Read more about the repercussions for “Tom” in this article.
