Cast shake-ups are as common as vacations and cocktails on Bravo's Real Housewives. Here's are some ways the cast is selected by producers.
Loyal fans of the Real Housewives franchise have been watching for years, seeing what new fights crop up each season and which new friendships have come up. There are some smart one-liners on the franchise and every housewife adds something.
Cast shake-ups are as common as vacations and cocktails on this Bravo franchise, and it's interesting to hear more about the casting process, as there are some women who have been on their show since the very first episode. Whether they appear for a season or several, the cast members are each very memorable, especially if they don't get along with the existing friend group.
While of course the franchise has the word "housewives" in the title, it's true that single women can be cast on the show.
Andy Cohen was talking about this on his show Watch What Happens Live and he brought up Jo de la Rosa who fans will remember from season one of Real Housewives of Orange County . He also mentioned how Bethenny Frankel wasn't married when she started on Real Housewives of New York , either. He said, "I think Housewives is the name and I think it's a little bit of a wink because housewives is an old fashion term and we're turning it on its head because a housewife now, it's a modern woman and it's something totally different."
It's interesting to think of people auditioning to appear on a reality show, as fans tend to think of that happening for fictional pop culture.
But it turns out that the women who appear on Real Housewives will audition . According to Cheat Sheet , Ryan Flynn, an executive at Bravo, explained that the Bravo team also wants to see "a slice of life" and will get to know how the person lives before making a decision.
The Real Housewives franchise is considered a "guilty pleasure" by many as it's just so much fun. And it turns out those in charge of casting make sure that the cast members will deliver entertainment.
Andy Cohen said that new cast members should be funny, he also wants women who are unique and really stand out. He was interviewed by Attitude in 2015 and he said,  " We cast very highly volatile, emotional, driven, opinionated women ."
It's helpful when someone knows the cast and that's one way that the show finds their new cast members. According to Bustle , Dorinda Medley knew the women on the Real Housewives of New York and so she was a perfect choice when it came time to find a new housewife. Fans loved watching Dorinda on the series, whether she was hosting at her Berkshires home or attending a party.
This is also true of the current season of The Real Housewives of Orange County , as newcomer Elizabeth Vargas knows Kelly Dodd.
Sometimes Andy Cohen and the cast members will have some bad blood between them, like when RHOC 's Tamra Judge said Cohen is "ageist." But he will sometimes go to his own social circle when casting the shows.
When Carole Radziwill was cast on RHONY , Andy Cohen asked her if she wanted to be on the show. According to an interview with Daily Beast, they're pals who were at a dinner party and he started talking to her about the opportunity.
If people are trying out for this franchise, they need to share a lot, Andy Cohen said in an interview with Nene Leakes on Watch What Happens Live! . They should be "open" and they need to have strong thoughts and feelings about the situations that they find themselves in.
They also have to "participate" and that includes going on the vacations that tend to take place each season. Fame 10 mentions that former RHONY cast member Aviva Drescher didn't go on one of those vacays.
Crystal Kung Minkoff has been cast for RHOBH and according to Variety , the franchise is now thinking about diversity when they go through the casting process.
As Shari Levine, an executive at Bravo, told Variety , “We are looking to increase the diversity of our shows. We are mindful of what the moment is. And we all feel the same in terms of intolerance, and in terms of being part of a culture that doesn’t inflict pain on people.”
Fans are used to seeing "friends" of the cast each season and it's true that sometimes, a pal of a main cast member will be hired.
When that happens, friends will still audition , according to Women's Health . That makes sense as Ryan Flynn appeared on The Daily Dish Podcast and explained  "It's always like, 'Who do you know that we should know?'"
How do Bravo excutives know that it's time for someone to leave the show? When they wouldn't have much to share on the series. Kemar Bassaragh, who is an exec producer on the Real Housewives of Potomac , said that it's all about the things that are going on in someone's life .
According to Bravo TV , Bassaragh explained that if someone said, "I’m married. I have a child. Like, there’s nothing new that I can show you," then the team wouldn't want them to return. This makes sense as there needs to be material to film as well as some dramatic arguments .
There are some cast members who have lasted a long time and it's tough for fans to let them go, but it's definitely true that sometimes, things don't work out and a new person has to come on board.
While it seems like there would be many people excited to join this popular Bravo franchise, a casting agent explained to Page Six that it's tough. They said, “We are lucky if we interview six to 10 people a season. Nobody with integrity is going to go on a reality show like that where you are flaunting your lifestyle and flashing cash.”

Shakeup alert! Real Housewives shows are ditching longtime cast members for fresh blood. Is your favorite lady returning to her reality series? Get the scoop on who's in and who's out and whether we think they'll return for another season.
Chances she'll return: 100 percent. Why: Teresa came out of the slammer and returned to life in front of the cameras. Season eight of RHONJ is wrapped, but you can expect Teresa to return for another go when the show does.
Chances she'll return: 100 percent. Why: Newcomer Margaret was a welcome addition to the series. Her no nonsense vibe and penchant for zingers endeared her to fans.
Chances she'll return: Siggy is NOT returning. Why: RHONJ newcomer Siggy fit right in with the ladies of the Garden State when she joined in season seven, but after a rocky season eight, Siggy announced she would not return for another year.
Chances she'll return: 90 percent. Why: Dolores and Siggy were the new blood in the Garden State and have deep ties to the other women, but Dolores hitched her wagon to Siggy in season eight, making her future a little less certain. However, should she want to come back, she'll be back.
Chances she'll return: 100 percent. Why: Melissa's story has been so tied to her sister-in-law Teresa Giudice that she will be around as long as—if not longer—than Teresa.
Chances she'll return: 90 percent. Why: After several years off the RHONJ playing field, Danielle reemerged and did yoga with Teresa—off-camera—and there she was back in front of the cameras. Danielle was a "friend" to the ladies, but with Siggy's departure and the relative low drama level of season eight, Danielle will be back in some capacity for season nine.
Chances she'll return: Too soon to tell. Why: Charisse was involved in all seasons of Potomac , but it's too soon to tell about season four.
Chances she'll return: Too soon to tell. Why: Word on the street is Gizelle was one of the breakout stars of the series, so she'll likely be back for season four.
Chances she'll return: Too soon to tell. Why: Karen thinks she's the grand dame of Potomac , she'll be back if the show lets her.
Chances she'll return: Too soon to tell. Why: Real Housewives of Potomac is still a fresh series, but much of the cast will probably be back.
Chances she'll return: Too soon to tell. Why: Robyn seemed to be the least interested in having her life on display on the show, but she was involved in all three seasons.
Chances she'll return: Too soon to tell. Why: Monique joined the cast in season two and wasted no time in getting down for some drama.
Chances she'll return: Kim is NOT returning. Why: Kim made her return to The Real Housewives of Atlanta with a guest appearance in season nine and as a "friend" in season 10, but after the dramatic season 10 reunion it's safe to say Kim's done with the series. In fact, she said she's never returning .
Chances she'll return: 100 percent. Why: Porsha returned for RHOA season 10 and will probably be around for as long as she wants to.
Chances She'll Return: 95 percent. Why: Cynthia returned for season 10 and will be back for season 11 unless something changes drastically.
Chances she'll return: 95 percent. Why: Kandi's back for another round of Atlanta drama in season 10, and will likely be back for season 11.
Chances she'll return: 85 percent. Why: NeNe announced she will not be back on the Bravo reality series after seven seasons as a main cast member, but surprised the ladies in the Bahamas in season eight. She sat out of season nine and returned as a full-time cast member in season 10. Season 11? That remains to be seen, but very strong probability.
Chances she'll return: Sheree is NOT returning. Why: After sitting several seasons out and returning to the fold as a friend, Sheree eventually reclaimed her peach...and then said she wouldn't return for season 11 .
Chances she'll return: Kenya is (probably) NOT returning. Why: Kenya returned for season 10, but she didn't go on the group trip and she's been reluctant to share her married life on screen...now it seems like she's done.
Chances she'll return: 100 percent. Why: LeeAnne, and the fights about charity and whether or not she pooped in her pants, were central to season one. Her meltdowns during season two were the gifts that kept on giving and she's back for season three.
Chances she'll return: 100 percent. Why: Cary and her husband Mark didn't have a great season, so she'll be back for redemption.
Chances she'll return: 100 percent. Why: Brandi made for great TV, she's back and showcasing her road to adoption.
Chances she'll return: 100 percent. Why: D'Andra and her fabulous mother are back.

Bravo’s reality franchise known as the Real Housewives has been incredibly successful over the past ten years, and it’s all due to the cast of women who keep us reeled in for more drama and more drama. As with all reality shows, the Real Housewives has a revolving door of cast who come and go throughout the years, but there’s a few who’ve stuck around through thick and thin. So what does it take to be a ‘real housewife?’ This list takes a look at how Bravo picks the lucky women who are cast for the show!
A transcript of an interview with a former producer for The Real Housewives of New Jersey was released with exclusive behind the scenes details that only an insider could know! One of the things the producer said was that all of the housewives have to audition for their role on the show. We know some are selected because they are friends of current housewives, but even if they aren’t auditioning, there is always a ‘trial period’ when they begin filming to see if their personality will work well on camera. When asked about Melissa Gorga being invited on RHNJ, the producer said she wasn’t just given a golden ticket in, she had to go through the process. “They auditioned, as does everyone. Look, it’s not like just because she is Teresa’s sister-in-law we instantly cast her because we had heard of bad blood between them. Teresa’s brother and Melissa were filmed for a short period and that was edited into a small compilation to see if they were interesting enough to be on television. This happens on every single show.”
As most people know, Andy Cohen is an executive producer for all of the Real Housewives shows and he’s an integral part making the Real Housewives happen. He’s got relationships with all of the women on the show, acting as their ‘middle man’ when things go wrong. During an interview in 2013, Andy revealed that, not only as a host of the show, but as the executive producer of the show, all of the women who are cast must go through him first. He said, “I am involved in all of it. We have a team…we work with the production company to go over submissions for Housewives.” Not only does Andy have a say in who gets hired, he also has a say in who gets fired! When NeNe Leakes, housewife from The Real Housewives of Atlanta , found this out, she said, “So if anything ever happens to me, I need to come for you? What! Are you kidding me?”
Being on any kind of reality television show requires a larger than life personality. This is mainly because the cast isn’t given a script to follow or a production story line, they must carry the entire show on their own. Back in 2015 Cohen said, “We cast very highly volatile, emotional, driven, opinionated women, and because of that, they go to town! And you sit down with them at the end of the season and they all have it out with each other…It’s really fun.” It’s clear just from watching the show, there are no ‘plain Jane’s’ cast, and if a cast member turns out to be boring, they are quickly booted off the show. On Watch What Happens Live , NeNe Leakes asked Andy Cohen what he looks for when casting a housewife and he replied: “someone who has a sense of humor or at least, funny or humorous or different in some way.” It takes a special kind of person to put up with some of the nonsense that happens on the Real Housewives . These women must be capable of having a good time — for Ramona it’s some good old fashioned “turtle time” or in Vicki’s case, “whoop it up!”
One of the main constants we see with the women who are cast on the Real Housewives is that they are typically quite wealthy, but we’ve seen women cast who aren’t necessarily filthy rich, like Bethenny Frankel circa season one and two of The Real Housewives of New York City . In fact, more than once women on the show have claimed bankruptcy! Looking at you Teresa Giudice and Sonja Morgan…It’s clear that having a lot of money in the bank isn’t necessarily a requirement, but Andy Cohen said in an interview that you have to be living a certain lifestyle. There’s a reason women who are rich are cast, it’s because they live a particular lifestyle that is entertaining to watch or interesting to the average person.
It’s no secret that a lot of the women on the show aren’t necessarily friends outside of filming; they just come together for a series of weeks to film. The producers of the show like to keep the women they hire within a certain group. The shows that work the best like RHOBH, RHOOC, and RHONY have a strong cast made up of women who have known one another for many years. They aren’t all necessarily friends, but they run in the same circles which makes it easier for producers to create a show around them and get them to all film together. In an interview with Attitude , Andy Cohen said, “The show works so well because it’s all people who have long histories with each other. So it’s not just throwing people together in a Big Brother house and seeing what happens.”
In order to be on a reality show it requires a certain form of invasion of privacy because cast members have to allow cameras into their personal space and relationships which takes a lot of courage and openness. When housewives aren’t being real in front of the cameras it always comes out later when they are caught being double-sided. In the interview with NeNe Leakes about what the producers look for when casting women on the show, Cohen said, “Someone who is willing to be open, live their life fully in front of the camera. Someone with
