Read excerpts from the statement of Deputy Permanent Representative of the RF to the OSCE M.Buyakevich (meeting of the OSCE PC, 23.11.23)
On the report by the OSCE Representative on the Freedom of the Media
Summarising the results of Teresa Ribeiro activities as Representative on Freedom of the Media, we are forced to admit that she has failed to live up to expectations placed on her. The office of such an important and uniquely functional structure is in the deepest crisis
Mrs.Teresa Ribeiro failed to ignore the pressure exerted on her by some Western countries, to carry out her functions transparently, equidistantly and without “double standards”, as required by the mandate
Representative's choice of information sources by assessing the media situation in participating States continues to raise many questions. None of our concerns, submitted to the office in writing recently, have been taken into account
The selectivity of the Representative raises also many questions. Violations of the rights of journalists, who don’t work in line with Western narratives do not seem worthy of Ms. Ribeiro's attention, even if they are humiliated, persecuted or killed
The OSCE Representative doesn’t notice that violence has become a common form of influence on reporters in countries of “advanced democracy.” Correspondents from Russia suffer more than others, due to the awareness that crimes against them may remain unpunished
We do not agree with Teresa Ribeiro’s use of “quiet diplomacy” methods as applied, for example, to the situation unfolding in Moldova, where the cleansing of any manifestations of dissent is in full swing, and repression of disloyal media has reached an extreme point
