Re-cognizize

Re·cog·ni·zance can be defined as a bond by which a person undertakes, as in legal context, to observe some condition.

As such, one may be said to be released from detainment of some kind "on one's own recognizance," the condition being that one is basically on one's own.

Such a definition might play out as such: one undertakes (commences to endeavor... to try...) to make one's own way in life, to go one's own course, essentially without overt fetter or support beyond such as is normative for anyone, facing whatever eventualities may arise.
