Blizzard's  Overwatch  is almost here, having recently wrapped up the biggest open beta of all time  and swimming in positive pre-launch buzz. If you've enjoyed your time with the game so far and are looking forward to the official launch, you might also want to consider a peripheral upgrade to go along with the game. In that case, Razer has you covered.
The Razer Overwatc h BlackWidow keyboard and Overwatch  DeathAdder Chroma mouse  release on May 22, just in time to get into your hands when the game launches on the 24th (the extra-large Overwatch- branded Goliathus mousepad  comes out a little later, on May 31). We took the whole setup for a spin during the recent open beta, and found that the products offer a lot to like for  Overwatch  fanatics.

In terms of construction and performance, Razer's Overwatch  keyboard is a reskinned version of the BlackWidow Chroma , a keyboard that currently has four out of five eggs with 130 reviews on Newegg. The BlackWidow Chroma is full RGB (that's what "Chroma" means in Razer product names), includes anti-ghosting and macro programming along with other standard gaming keyboard features, and is built using the "Razer Mechanical Switch," which isn't a Cherry MX or other highly-regarded switch type but performed very well during my testing of the keyboard.
The Razer switch requires 50g of force to actuate, and for a sample of how the keys sound (a very important consideration when purchasing a gaming keyboard) you can check out the video above.

What the video above also shows is one of the most interesting forms of integration between this keyboard (or other modern Razer Chroma boards) and  Overwatch  itself. Along with a selection of other games ,  Overwatch  works with the lighting on your board to allow for more specialized functions that the standard rainbow color shifting that you might be used to. In practice, what this means is that the WASD keys automatically light up in  Overwatch  orange, the three ability keys (Q, E, and Shift by default) illuminate in a different color that fades when the ability is on cooldown, and your Ultimate ability causes a keyboard-wide illumination splash when it's fully charged.
It'll be up to you how useful the Ultimate animation on the keyboard actually is. I personally found that  Overwatch  did such a good job in-game of letting me know when my Ultimate was ready that the keyboard rarely had a chance to make its "voice" heard. It's an undeniably cool effect though, and if you play enough  Overwatch  there are bound to be times the flickers from your keyboard make the difference between a timely Ultimate and a missed opportunity.
A few minor complaints about the keyboard that came up during my testing were just matters of aesthetics. The board was a fingerprint magnet, as many gaming keyboards are, and I found myself wanting to wipe the smudges off frequently so I could properly admire it. I'm also not a big fan of the font on the board, since it's very compact and hard to read. Thicker, blockier letters would have done a better job of showing off the board's illumination as well.
Probably the coolest bit of  Overwatch  integration with Razer's Chroma keyboards is the fact that the keyboard lighting color changes on the fly as you switch between the game's different characters. Each of the 21 different characters in the game has their own color, and the board changes instantly even on the game's character selection menu.
As with the cooldown timer effect, this color shifting feature is probably more cool than it is useful, but if you're paying $180 for a keyboard packed full of RGB lights you probably know that you're paying for the cool factor as much as anything else. And switching between Zarya's pink/purple hue, Pharah's bold orange, and Reaper's deep red just feels awesome.
The keyboard enhances the  Overwatch  experience a bit by bringing the game's vibrant colors and characters into the real world, in a fashion, and if something like this lighting effect could be extended to monitor or desk lighting, it could really make for a fantastic experience. A room bathed in LED lighting in a color corresponding to our  Overwatch  character of the moment is just a dream for now, but a keyboard that does exactly that is a real thing that you can actually buy.
And of course this  Overwatch  integration works with Razer's other Chroma boards , in case you don't want to be bound to a product with single-game branding, but if you're already in love with  Overwatch  there's no better keyboard available to use to show that love.
There's less going on with the Overwatch  DeathAdder than the keyboard, but given the popularity and simplicity of the DeathAdder design (lots of positive  reviews on Newegg) it's probably wise they didn't tweak too much. The mouse features a sensor capable of up to 10,000 DPI (more than you'll ever need, and certainly plenty for  Overwatch ), on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment (more useful in  Overwatch  than in many other games, thanks to the diverse cast of characters), and an extremely comfortable shape.
When I first started using the  Overwatch  DeathAdder I was a little surprised by how few buttons it has, but in practice it feels like the two side buttons are just about right for  Overwatch . With these buttons mapped to Q and E and your Shift ability remaining on the keyboard (or mapped to the mouse wheel click if you're one of  those  people) you should be all set.
The DeathAdder doesn't do the neat color-changing tricks the keyboard does, which is kind of a shame because it would be nice to have the light in the scroll wheel match the dominant tone of your keyboard. Other than that, though, the  Overwatch  DeathAdder is a slick piece of tech, and it has the added bonus of using the  Overwatch  symbol rather than the wordmark, which gives the mouse a bit more stylistic versatility than the keyboard, in my eyes.
Peripherals tied in to specific games are always a tricky purchase, because games come and go. In contrast to a lot of other game-branded gear though, this keyboard and mouse set is solidly constructed and based on peripherals with strong reputations for performance. This isn't cheap garbage with an  Overwatch  sticker on it, this is the BlackWidow and DeathAdder,  Overwatch -style.
It's also wonderful that Razer's Chroma game integration also offers some  Overwatch -specific benefits for this keyboard. Though the bells and whistles and flashing lights are of debatable utility, they at least attempt to offer functionality and flavor that fits the game.
Everything we know about Blizzard tells us that  Overwatch  is likely to be a game that makes a big splash and sticks around for a long time, so there's less risk of buying into branding that's forgotten in a month with these products than similar ones in the past (can I interest anyone in a  Titanfall  keyboard ?). If you're itching for more  Overwatch  and it's time for a keyboard and mouse upgrade, Razer's official gear is worth your consideration.
