Six people were arrested by police after a 16-year-old girl was paraded through the streets roped to her alleged rapist in Madhya Pradesh, India, while crowds chanted
A shocking video appearing to show a teenage girl tied to her alleged rapist has emerged from a village.
The clip, which was taken in Madhya Pradesh, India, captures a 16-year-old girl tied with a rope to a man.
As they walk along a rowdy crowd of people can be heard shouting and chanting 'long live Mother India'.
The girl's family were reportedly among those who insisted she be publicly shamed after the accusations of rape emerged.
Police arrived at the scene and freed the girl, who was reportedly attacked during the humiliating ritual.
Six people, including the alleged rapist, were arrested.
According to NDTV, police officer Dilip Singh Bilwal said: "One of the cases was filed against the 21-year-old man who is accused of rape.
"Another FIR (first information report) was filed against family members of the girl and villagers for parading her in the village and beating her."
India has come under the global spotlight in recent years for its record on sexual violence.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 32,033 rape cases were recorded in the country in 2019, or 88 a day on average.
While this gives India a significantly lower per-capita rate than other countries - and roughly a quarter of France's for example - it is widely accepted that a high proportion of rapes in the country are not reported.
This may be in part due to a cultural of victim blaming which can stretch from villages to the court system.
Last month Justice Krishna Dixit was widely criticised after he granted anticipatory bail -bail ahead of an arrest - to a man accused of rape in south Indian state Karnataka.
He suggested the victim's accusations were false and questioned why she had fallen asleep after the alleged attack.
He said her reasoning, "that she was tired," was "unbecoming of an Indian woman; that is not the way our women react when they are ravished", Nikkei reported.
In recent years several rape cases in India have garnered international attention due to their shocking natures.
The gang rape of a 23-year-old student on a public bus in Delhi in 2012 sparked large protests across the capital.
She was with a male friend who was severely beaten with an iron rod, which was then used to penetrate her so severely that the victim's intestines had to be surgically removed.
She died thirteen days after the attack.
Further widescale protests were called when a woman who was admitted to hospital in Delhi after an attack in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in September died.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 15-year-old Minnesota girl who thought she was helping a friend’s dad was instead kidnapped and held captive for 29 days during which she was repeatedly raped, tied up with zip ties and locked in a closet before escaping and swimming across a lake to safety, prosecutors said Thursday in announcing charges against three men.
Court documents detail instances in which the girl said she believed that the men were trying to kill her, including when she fought back as one of them tried to push her underwater in a bathtub, and another when a cord or rope was placed around her neck and she was forced to hang until she couldn’t breathe.
Weeks into her ordeal, police knocked on the door of the mobile home where she was being held to investigate a report of stolen property, but no one answered. After that, the men told the girl to get into a duffel bag, loaded her in the back of a truck, and moved her to an abandoned home.
The girl escaped from that home in rural, western Minnesota on Tuesday when the men left her alone for the first time in nearly a month as they went to get pizza. She knocked on nearby doors, then swam across part of a lake — losing her pants and shoes in the water — and flagged down a farmer for help.
The Associated Press generally does not name victims of sexual assault and is not naming the girl. She was reunited with her family Tuesday, and the family has asked for privacy.
Three men were charged Thursday with multiple counts. Thomas Barker, 32, of Carlos, Minnesota, and Steven Powers, 20, of Benson, were charged with kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct and false imprisonment. Joshua Holby, 31, of Carlos was charged with kidnapping and false imprisonment.
According to the criminal complaint, Barker kidnapped the girl from her home in Alexandria, about 133 miles (214 kilometers) northwest of Minneapolis, on Aug. 8 by tricking her into thinking he needed her to talk to his son, who was misbehaving. Barker was her friend’s dad, so she agreed to help, leaving her phone behind.
Prosecutors say Barker drove the girl to his mobile home in Carlos, about 9 miles away, restrained her and sexually assaulted her, brandishing a firearm and threatening to kill her.
The girl told police that shortly after her abduction, Barker, who has cerebral palsy and is physically-impaired, put her in a bathtub while she was restrained with zip ties “and she believes that he tried to drown her” but she fought back. In a second incident, the girl told police, she was put in a duffel bag that Holby and Barker put in the bathtub, but she stuck her head out of a hole in the bag. She told police that in another incident, a rope or cord was placed around her neck and she was required to stand on a bucket, the complaint said.
“She stated that Holby then forced her off of the bucket and she described a period in which she could not breathe,” the complaint said. She said Powers also forced her to snort a line of “white powder.”
The criminal complaint says Powers arrived at the home about two weeks into the girl’s abduction and was told not to go into Barker’s room when Barker and Holby left the residence. But Powers became curious, went into the bedroom and found the girl in the locked closet.
“Powers did not free (her), nor did he contact law enforcement,” the complaint said.
The complaint says the girl had a television set and fan in the closet, and food and water were brought to her.
The farmer who found told police he saw something moving in a field of tall grass about 300 yards away from him, then realized it was a female running toward him — wet and wearing no pants or shoes.
When she got closer, the farmer recognized her as the girl pictured in missing-person fliers in the area. The girl said she needed the cops “now” and he called 911 while she got into his truck and hid, the complaint said.
A message left with an attorney for Barker and Holby was not immediately returned. The name of Powers’ attorney was not immediately available.
According to the complaint, Barker told police that he had used methamphetamine and alcohol, but he denied knowing the girl or picking her up. Barker also said that Powers had been with the girl, but that he had not and he declined to answer more questions, the complaint said. WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON:

DISTURBING footage shows a 17-year-old girl tied up and gagged with her own underwear being rescued from a shipping container.
Nikitah Beadman was savagely beaten, kidnapped and sexually assaulted by her ex-boyfriend Robert Galleghan in south-east Queensland, Australia in 2012.
In an exclusive interview, the young victim has recounted her terrifying torture which included her twisted-ex raping her with wire in an attempt to make her infertile.
Speaking with A Current Affair , she said: “I knew what was going to happen.
“He always said he'd bury me out there. I actually thought I was dead.”
Galleghan, who was jailed for eight years for the heinous attack, assaulted Beadman when she broke up with him at a party before chasing their mutual friends away with a knife.
After bashing her skull on a coffee table, he dragged her to a shipping container at the back of the property where he tied her to a shopping trolley, gagged her and wired her mouth shut, before wrapping her head with a yoga mat so she could barely breath.
Beadman described the rape, saying: “Not in a sexual way. In a torture way, so I couldn't have kids.”
Galleghan also stomped on his former lover's stomach.
When officers Peter Venz and Danny Rahe attended the property, Galleghan told them he had been assaulted.
However as the cops searched the home they heard faint cries from the shipping container and busted it open to find Beadman inside.
Sgt Rahe spoke about the moment he found the distressed teenager.
He said: “When the doors opened we’ve seen the trolley, like a fridge loading trolley, and we could see a body strapped to it.
“That’s when we went inside and probably saw the most horrific thing we’ve seen. My heart actually sank
“It was evil and depraved what I saw.”
The officers filmed the rescue for evidence and feared Beadman would not survive.
Sgt Venz said: “She had a blue yoga mat strapped around her head with wire and she was wired all the way down the shopping trolley.
“The wire was so tight it was just cutting into her skin.”
The teenager had been dating Galleghan, who was 12 years older than her, for three months before the incident.
But as the warped thug became increasingly abusive, the teen repeatedly tried to break up with him leading to Galleghan threatening her and her family.
The brutal assault happened when the scared girl said she was going to live with her mother to be closer to work.
Galleghan was sentenced to eight years behind bars and will be released in 2021.
The maniacal lover, who had a previous conviction for attacking a man with a samurai sword, was on parole for assaulting a police officer at the time of the incident.
Brave Beadman told the news outlet that she is suffering from lifelong injuries.
She said: “I have got a twisted backbone and two rotated ribs, that in any sort of movement or any sort of exercise could pierce one of my lungs.
“I have got multiple sprains all through my back; I have got sciatic nerve damage; I have also got nerve damage in my right arm, that I still couldn’t use for a year-and-a-half after — which was from the wire.”

A man tied up a mother and made her listen to him rape her children, with one teen jumping from the window naked trying to escape.
A serial rapist’s victim jumped naked from a first-floor window, as she tried to escape a horror attack in her home where her mum was tied up, a court heard today.
Joseph McCann, 34, is said to have bound a mother with electrical cord and forced her to listen to the muffled screams of her children, as he allegedly raped them both, until one of the victims jumped from the window.
Just hours after the first sick attack, he allegedly kidnapped and attacked another woman, 71, after snatching her and a teen, 13, forcing them to drive far from home.
Mr McCann met the mum in a bar in Haslingden, in Greater Manchester, in the UK in the early hours of Sunday, May 5, and noticing she was intoxicated, offered to take her home in a taxi, the Old Bailey Central Criminal Court heard.
When the pair arrived at her house, Mr McCann allegedly used electrical cord to tie her to her bed.
Mr McCann then woke the daughter, 17, and boy, 11, and allegedly raped them both in the next room as the mother, restrained to her bed, was forced to watch.
While the boy, 11, cut his mother free from the wires binding her to the bed, the daughter, who was naked, leapt out of the first floor window to escape the attack.
As she fell, she fractured her right heel as she ran to the home of relative where she called the police.
The teen’s escape was captured on local CCTV and played to the jury today in pixelated footage.
She told her family, crying hysterically and gasping in pain, “I need the police. I just jumped out the window. He has got a knife. He cut me. I really hurt my foot.
“Please come before he hurts my brother and my mother.”
Mr McCann left by the front door and escaped on a child’s bicycle towards a bus stop.
The court was told the woman was “very drunk” and Mr McCann “exploited her vulnerability” by going with her to her house in the taxi.
John Price, QC, prosecuting, told the court: “There were various comings and goings during the night at the house, of friends and family, until there came a time when apart from the woman and her two children, he was the only person there.
“It was then that he struck,” Mr Price said.
Jurors heard Mr McCann may defend the sexual acts as consensual, or deny they ever took place.
The next day, Mr McCann is alleged to have moved on to Ramsbottom, eight kilometres away where an elderly woman, 71, was loading her shopping into the boot of her Fiat Punto about lunchtime.
Mr Price said, “He opened the door and got into the front passenger seat. She told him to get out.
“In response he punched her hard in the face and ordered her to drive.
“She was to be detained in her own car during the following five hours or so. Amid other gross sexual indignity and violence inflicted upon her, she was orally raped by this man.”
It was not until 6pm that evening that she was able to escape at a motorway service station in Knutsford — almost 50km from where she’d been detained. A girl, 13, also escaped with her.
The court also heard when Mr McCann allegedly violently kidnapped and raped his first victim, he was wearing a wig.
The woman, 21, who had been walking home from a nightclub in the suburb of Watford in northwest London, described the attack to police, who played the tape to jurors during the trial.
