Originally posted by NotContinuum: I thought some of the anti-rheumatoid arthritis drugs were being looked at for Crohn's, mostly because they block TNF action, which can also lead to inflammation in the intenstines. Wonder how that turned out.
Originally posted by LTParis: Well the good thing is if you have Crohn's, it's better than Ulserative Colitis which is more prone to go cancerous. I have lived with Crohn's for nearly 20 years now. I'm now on Asacol (was on Sulfazalazine for 15 years) and have been feeling great.

I had my colonoscopy today, and it was one of the worst experiences I've ever had. I was talking to the nurses when they gave me the Versed and Fentanyl. Anyway, that's always a nice feeling. So I probably fell asleep except for the last, worst part. Going through my colon was no problem, I don't remember that at all, which means I was probably asleep. Then all of a sudden incredible pain. I remember jerking up (I was laying on my side) and one of the nurses caught me. They turned me on my back with my legs spread, and the pain stopped just as quickly as it had come. Anyway all of a sudden it started again and I ended up trying to get up, The nurse caught me again and pinned me down, and I remember yelling and begging them to stop, and I bit her shoulder. I remember them saying a few minutes later that they were done, and I was awake while they took the scope out, which was painless. It turns out that the pain hit when they entered the small intestine, which is apparently still inflamed -- which likely means Crohn's. I am not happy about this. Anyway, it was the worst most awful feeling ever because the pain is deep way up inside of you and all you want to do is make it stop but you can't. I didn't cry but I sure wanted to. I have to say, that nurse was pretty fucking strong, because I'm pretty strong and she had no trouble holding me down. They took some biopsies, and I'm supposed to call them in five business days to get the results. She was cool about it afterwards and said I did fine. I dunno -- maybe I did, but I felt like I acted like a baby. Honestly it hurt so bad I can't even describe it. The cramps that sent me to the ER were nothing compared to this pain. Nothing. They wheeled me to the recovery room and I slept for *maybe* five minutes. The nurses thought that was weird -- they had given me all of the drugs that they'd brought (which is unusual), but I was still up and about much quicker than most people. Most people sleep for 30 minutes at least, but I was raring to go as soon as they were done. Same story with my wisdom teeth: as soon as they were done I wanted to go. Anyway, I left about 15 minutes after they were done. I don't really remember much until about an hour after the procedure. I was awake and interacting with people, but they're all little snapshots as though I was sleep walking it. I'm a little tired now, but I made a shitload of home-made potato chips and a steak, and I'm full and happy for the first time in a few days. -- View image here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif -- I'm so glad it's over, I don't want to repeat the experience, and if I do have to do it again, complete anesthesia is the only way I will do it. No more of the conscious sedation bullshit. It hurts WAY too much. Random note: My heart skipped a beat while I was attached to the EKG machine and it sounded completely normal. I thought that was weird. It was just before I went under -- I was idly wondering what it would sound like if I skipped one, and then it happened. Completely normal. I find that reassuring.
Pain is pain, I wouldn't feel like a wuss. I had a root canal once. One of the roots was in a twisted part of bone. Let's just say that it took so long to get to, that once they did, enough anesthesia had worn off that I felt them touch it. I've never experienced pain like that. I think I jumped right out of the chair. I think hearing your story, I'll go for the complete outage myself, when the time comes.
Well I'm not sure if they normally go into the small intestine. I think they do go into it a little ways, but the only reason it hurt (according to the doc) was because of the inflammation, otherwise it shouldn't have hurt. I dunno. I'll do the complete anesthesia regardless. I don't even want to take the chance.

Holy shit, (hah), I was hoping this was a DoD thread.
shit I just had a crohns disease scare. I hope that whatever I have doesnt relapse.
Good luck Hanser. and... Happy Belated Birfday!
My GI shut down one day, and I was in fucked condition. Harvard ER put me through to another local hospital once it got insanely painful, and then I was stoned the rest of week on morphine, while they failed to determine the cause. They never figured it out, so it was chalked up to a severe case of foodborne illness. I had to have a "low residue" diet for the next week.
Well the good thing is if you have Crohn's, it's better than Ulserative Colitis which is more prone to go cancerous. I have lived with Crohn's for nearly 20 years now. I'm now on Asacol (was on Sulfazalazine for 15 years) and have been feeling great.
Morphine makes me vomit. I know I've had it before when I was in the hospital the first time.
I was given morphine once. I didn't find the experience the least bit pleasant. I have a hard time understanding how anyone can find the experience of opioids pleasurable. I think I can honestly say the worst pain I've ever felt was when I had a kidney stone. It's sort of like a cross between a cramp and being kicked in the nuts really hard. I was in the hospital for that when I was given the morphine, but the pain really came and went at pretty random intervals, so the morphine didn't do a lot for it. Sympathy++
You know, when my cat bit an orderly who was giving her a shot (pain response too, only person she's ever bit), we had to quarantine her for two weeks, as it was the law. Do you have to be quarantined? Being stuck at home sucks. -- View image here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif --
note <----------to fucken lazy to use google
Crohn's is, well, inflammation of the small intestine. AFAIK, they haven't really pinned down a cause for it. (Ulcerative) Colitis is similar, but in the large intestine. GI==Gastro Intestinal. If your bowels stop moving/functioning and they don't start up again, soon, Bad Things happen. Hope ya' get to feeling better, hanser.
I have a friend with Crohn's. He had some sort of awful fistula and kept bleeding blood and… other bodily nasties out. The docs kept trying to plug him up with stoppers and glue, but it never lasted long. Actually, I haven't heard him mention it for months or maybe even a year, so maybe he's okay now.
Crohn's sorta runs in my family. My mom has it; about eight years ago they did a bowel resection, took about six feet of small intestine out, mostly dying tissue. She's done well on meds after that, and hopefully will avoid future surgery which could result in the dreaded bag. I'm just short of 26, but my doctor recommended early colonoscopy for me, since the family history is there. It's fucking brutal. General "knock me the fuck out" anesthesia is the only humane way of doing this
