Ranma is a pretty bad guy, so Akane ends up getting hurt more often than not. I think they couldn't put up with each other, but in the end, they were able to reach a point where they thought they liked one another.
I think probably when Ranma said "You're cute when you smile" is the first time she's aware of having a crush. The first big fight Ranma has with Ryoga shows that Akane already clearly cares about Ranma's well being, and there's the big girl/girl hug scene.

Because it isn't just the arranged marriage between Ranma and Akane.
