The thesis examines how people appropriated Christianity, and especially charismatic Catholicism, as well as mobile phones. It argues that persisting ontological premises have influenced the way people made these new things their own, thus stressing continuity within change. Via prayers, spirit possessions, and phones villagers currently call on spiritual others who are an intimate part of their lifeworld. While Christianity has been influencing Sepik lives since the first half of the last century, mobile phone technology has only recently been introduced. In Timbunmeli village received access to the mobile phone network. Most villagers use mobile phones to talk with relatives and friends in other places, but some villagers also started to use them to talk with dead relatives. They influence the way humans act and perceive themselves, things, and the world. However, although people are influenced by mutual understandings of their experienced world, they also influence their lifeworld through their actions. They shape it and may change it through their practices in dialectic interaction between what is given and what they actualise by engaging with others and things in the space constituting their lifeworld. The data for this thesis was collected during a 14 months long fieldwork in Timbunmeli. The main method of data collection was participant observation, supplemented by interviews and group discussions, a household survey, a study about female fishing activities, and a mobile phone network analysis. Furthermore, the thesis includes personal and methodological reflections about experiences the anthropologist had with her interlocutors that have strongly been influenced by her being perceived as a dead person from the village who had returned in a white body. Furthermore, the local understanding of personhood assumes that a spiritual substance, called kaik, is crucial for life. Persons in Timbunmeli are composite beings, embodying different entities and identities. They are composed of maternal and paternal matter, names, as well as kaik that intimately connect them with past and present beings, their cosmos, and its creator, who today is called God. After death it returns to the invisible part of the world as a spirit of the dead. From there it might return to the living to communicate with them via mediums or to visit them in a new, usually white, body and deliver messages, money, and goods. In fact, people have established a lived relation to the realm of death that seeks to access the dead as a source for change. This is reflected in practices of prayer groups that aim at strengthening their relations with the dead via prayers and offerings. People have always had different techniques to communicate with spirit beings, but today also prayers and mobile phones are means to bridge over into the invisible realm and communicate with dead relatives, who nowadays are understood as being spirits of God. After converting to Catholicism people had temporarily distanced themselves from former practices and beliefs and came to perceive their own traditional spirits as evil. However, currently a re-interpretation process is taking place that re-legitimates their own spirit beings as spirits of God, and in fact understands God as being an ancestral being as well. The way people engage with God and His spirits shows continuities to their interactions with local spirits in seances and healing rituals of the past. Women deliver the talk of God, who works through His spirits in their bodies to heal, preach, and talk prophecy. Currently an egalitarian process is taking place, concerning the access to and representation of the spiritual sphere, that offers women and uninitiated men the possibility to extend themselves into a domain that was formerly only inhabited by initiated men; a process that has engendered intensified struggles for male leaders. These premises have influenced the way people in Timbunmeli have made Christianity and mobile phones their own and have to be considered as being rather stable factors in processes of change. In the comparison, 27 laboratories from 8 countries were involved, and CT scanned two items selected among common industrial parts: a polymer part and a metal part. Altogether, 27 sets of items were circulated in parallel to the participants. Different measurands are considered, encompassing diameters, roundness, and lengths. The results of each participant are kept confidential. Each participant can identify their own results in this report using an anonymous identification number provided by the coordinator. Measuring instructions distributed by the coordinator were followed by all participants without problems. Participants carried out measurements and sent their results to the coordinator. All single items were measured by the coordinator using coordinate measuring machines before and after circulation. Both the metal item and the plastic item have shown a good stability over the total period of approx. Systematic errors were detected for some participants on the diameters and lengths, for both plastic and metal items. The roundness measured by the participants for both plastic and metal items was higher than the unfiltered reference value. A clear influence from the surrounding wall thickness on the measurement of roundness was documented for the metal item. Each participant can use the comparison results in the report to investigate the presence of systematic errors or an underestimation of uncertainties. Statistics related to the used equipment and procedures show that participants, in general, have followed state of the art procedures for their measurements. The industrial items are suitable artefacts for CT measurements of this kind, and each participant has been offered to keep a set used for the measurements in the comparison. In this dissertation, we present methods for the effective use of these platforms for the acceleration of two production molecular modeling applications: molecular docking and binding site mapping. Molecular docking refers to the computational prediction of the structure of the intermolecular complex formed when two independent proteins interact. Binding site mapping, on the other hand, aims at finding the region on the surface of a protein that is likely to bind a small molecule with high affinity. Docking and mapping find vi application in drug discovery which involves docking-based screening of millions of drug candidates for a given protein target; mapping helps identify the site on the protein where the binding is likely to occur, thus limiting the docking-based search to a small region. Both docking and binding site mapping are computationally very demanding, requiring many hours to days on a serial processor. This makes it impractical for biologists to run them interactively on their desktop computers; production docking and mapping programs typically run in batch on large clusters. In this dissertation, we present the FPGA and GPU based acceleration of the production molecular docking program PIPER and the production binding site mapping program FTMap, enabling desktop based molecular modeling solutions which are fast and cost effective as well as more power efficient. The acceleration of mapping computations on FPGAs and GPUs poses further challenges for two reasons: the process is iterative, with relatively little computation per iteration, and a large fraction of the computation is serial. We address these issues on the FPGAs by creating highly customized, deeply pipelined processors. On GPUs, we introduce two new data structures that enable effective parallelization. Many of the proposed algorithms and hardware structures are general and can vii be applied to a variety of other applications, both in the field of molecular modeling as well as other domains such as object recognition, n-body simulations and full-field biomechanics deformation and strain-measurement.
