When you're a rock or a metal artist, you're bound to touch upon a controversial topic, anger the regular MTV audience, or do something shocking that would get you banned in an entire country. In line with their general image and actions, some of the music videos those artists put out are so risque not only the tame MTV bans it from airplay but it also disappears from YouTube. Let's take a look at the 7 biggest rock and metal videos that got banned or heavily censored at different times.

Nine Inch Nails made their big splash with "The Downward Spiral" and a big attributing factor to that was the music video for "Closer" which was as popular as it was controversial. Of course, in order to receive the airplay it received, the video was heavily edited to fit the MTV standards, and it made sense since the director's cut included nudity, animal cruelty, BDSM imagery, and enough creepy visuals to make it the second most weird video on this list. A lot of fans would argue that another Nine Inch Nails song received an even more disturbing and outright banned video, but "Happiness in Slavery" was never intended for the MTVs of this world and it wasn't nearly as significant as "Closer".
Rammstein are known to be provocative. For years they've used fake penises to sodomize each other on stage, had sexual references in almost every song, and even their version of Snowhite was far from the Disney one. Music videos were somewhat tame until 2004's "Reise, Reise" when they started taking risks. First was "Mein Teil" with an angel performing fellatio on Till Lindemann, then the band teamed up with Jonas Åkerlund for "Mann Gegen Mann" which had so many naked oiled up men fighting each other you would think it's a perverse version of WWE. But the pinnacle of Rammstein going all out with provocative videos was 2009's "Pussy" which featured all six members of the band engaging in full-on hardcore porn scenes. Due to obvious reasons, the video is banned from YouTube in its original edit and was instead premiered on a porn site.
What do you do for your first music video if you are a young gothic-influenced black metal band? Correct, use gallons of blood, extensive nudity, gore, and a lot of disturbing imagery to scare any sensible channel from ever showing your video. For their debut music video, the band hired Alex Chandon, who specialized in micro-budget horror flicks, and shot "From the Cradle to Enslave" that immediately got heavily censored to be eligible for airplay. The unedited version appeared later on the band's DVD "PanDaemonAeon".
Marilyn Manson is just about the only artist who can battle Rammstein for the crown of the biggest and most provocative metal performer. Manson's videos were always filled with sexual imagery, obscene references, and a healthy amount of nudity here and there, but for "(s)AINT" he really outdid himself. Self-harm, gratuitous nudity, drug use, BDSM — just about everything not allowed on TV. Needless to say, the video was heavily censored in order to receive some airplay, however, the unedited version is available on YouTube despite definitely violating some o the community guidelines.
Not all videos get censored for nudity or extreme violence, sometimes the director and the band will touch upon such a controversial topic the video, that doesn't actually show anything shocking will be censored. Pearl Jam have based their song "Jeremy" around a real-life story of a kid named Jeremy Wade Delle who shot himself in front of his classmates during an English lesson, and so the director Mark Pellington created a re-enactment of the tragic story for the video. The shot of a boy putting a gun in his mouth was edited out due to an MTV policy, but this move created an ambiguous ending where it could be interpreted that the protagonist shoots his bandmates instead of himself. Despite the negative backlash (or maybe because of it), the video became a great hit and even received awards, but after the events of Columbine, Highschool Shootings was taken off the air indefinitely. The unedited version is now only available on YouTube.
Only such weird band as Mr. Bungle can have their video banned by MTV for "weird imagery". The things that made the channel uneasy were the bodies hanging off the meathooks, but looking back on it, it was probably just an official reason not to put that kind of weirdness on the air. In all fairness, it is difficult to imagine anything less weird as a music video for Mr. Bungle.
"Smack My Bitch Up" is a weird one since it receives airplay once in a while, always late at night, but at the time, it was one of the most famous "banned" videos out there. Shot by Jonas Åkerlund from the first-person perspective, it presents a day in the life of an individual who shows no regard for his wellbeing or for being a productive member of society. The video features vomit, extensive nudity, drug use, abuse, and just antisocial behavior in general, so no one really expected it to receive heavy rotation on MTV. Interestingly enough, it is banned by YouTube, despite some of the more hardcore videos on this list being readily available.
