Radiocarbon dating (also referred to as carbon dating or carbon-14 dating ) is a method for determining the age of an object containing organic material by using the properties of radiocarbon , a radioactive isotope of carbon . The method was developed in the late 1940s at the University of Chicago by Willard Libby .
RADIOCARBON DATING : Radiocarbon dating is achieved by two methods . The traditional "Beta-counting" method is based on the detection of radioactive decay of the radiocarbon (14 C) atoms . The AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) method is based on the detection of mass of 14 C atoms in the sample (and therefore its ratio of 14 C to 12 C) . These techniques are made possible by sensitive electronic instruments developed in the late twentieth century .
Radiocarbon dating is a method that provides objective age estimates for carbon-based materials that originated from living organisms . 1 An age could be estimated by measuring the amount of carbon-14 present in the sample and comparing this against an internationally used reference standard .
The dating principle . Once an organism dies the carbon is no longer replaced . Because the radiocarbon is radioactive, it will slowly decay away . Obviously there will usually be a loss of stable carbon too but the proportion of radiocarbon to stable carbon will reduce according to the exponential decay law: R = A exp(-T/8033)
In contrast, for radiocarbon dating the amount of 14 C simply reduces over time, producing an inversely proportional relationship between 14 C quantity and age of the sample . At time zero, a given sample U-Th ratio would be made up entirely of uranium .
Radiocarbon dating is simply a measure of the level of 14 C isotope within the organic remains (8) . This is not as clear-cut as it seems as the amount of 14 C isotopes in the atmosphere can vary . This is why calibration against objects whose age is known is required (14) .
The introduction of radiocarbon dating had an enormous influence on both archaeology and geology—an impact often referred to as the " radiocarbon revolution ." Before Libby's research, investigators in these fields had to rely on methods of dating that were merely relative, such as comparing the layers of a site in which artifacts were found, presuming that the layers of a site were laid down chronologically .
14 Carbon Dating . Radiocarbon dating is different than the other methods of dating because it cannot be used to directly date rocks, but can only be used to date organic material produced by once living organisms . 14 C is continually being produced in the Earth's upper atmosphere by bombardment of 14 N by cosmic rays .
