RESOLUTION OF CONTRADICTIONS

RESOLUTION OF CONTRADICTIONS

T-shooting Heuristics

Resolving Contradictions is one of the most powerful tools for solving non-standard problems. Use the following methods:

1. Resolution in Time:

  • Separate contradictory requirements over time.
  • Find a way to switch between states.
  • Make state changes automatic.

Examples:

  • Napoleon at the coronation: the pope blesses the crown first, then Napoleon places it on his own head.
  • Ford only paid repairmen for the downtime of equipment.
  • Sostratus carved his name into stone and wrote the ruler’s name above it, which eventually wore away over time.

2. Resolution in Space:

  • Distribute contradictory properties across different parts of the system.
  • Use multi-level structures.
  • Apply the nesting principle.

Examples:

  • Gangway steps are arranged in a staggered pattern – half the width, same functionality.
  • Different tire pressures to change clearance.
  • Bimetallic strip for automatic greenhouse ventilation.

3. Resolution in Relationships:

  • Make the system display different properties in different interactions.
  • Use various operating modes.
  • Employ selective action.

Examples:

  • Pills with protective coating: harmless for adults, induce vomiting in children.
  • Threaded filter: permeable to water, impermeable to debris.
  • Anti-reflective coating: reflects certain wavelengths, transmits others.

Key Application Rules:

1. Formulate the contradiction clearly: "It must be A to... and it must be not-A to..."

2. Consider all three methods of resolution for each contradiction.

3. Look for ways to make the state-switching automatic.

4. Use the available resources of the system.

5. Strive for an ideal solution.

Indicators of a Strong Solution:

  • The contradiction is fully resolved without compromises.
  • No additional costs or resources are required.
  • Switching between states occurs automatically.
  • The solution is universally applicable to similar problems.
