"There's a fine line," author Oscar Levant once said, "between genius and insanity." In this fascinating first novel by GVR Corcillo, the heroine Lisa Flyte traverses that line in a high wire balancing act of breathtaking gracelessness. Yeah, that's right; Lisa's kinda clumsy. She's also totally impulsive. She doesn't have much fashion sense, is apt to misread social cues and when it comes to dancing--Let's not even go there. You'll just have to read that scene for yourself. Worst of all, despite being thin (relative, that is, to the plus-plus size she hit before going into a coma) and rich (due to a settlement from the Burger Barn where, after trying on wedding dresses, she was ordering her standard comfort meal of double everything when the drive-thru crashed down on her--hence the coma, and hence the weight loss), Lisa awakens to discover she still isn't happy. Why? Because she's afraid of fast cars, heights, big animals, how to dress, what people think of her--okay, just about everything. So to "get brave" (and thus finally gain happiness), Lisa embarks on an extreme self improvement course comprised of tackling extreme sports in order to bolster her extremely low self esteem. Surely, Lisa reasons, if she can overcome her physical fears, emotional well-being will follow. With this goal in mind (and with all the blundering stubbornness that characterizes this heroine) Lisa chases through the forest after Jack Hawkins (owner of "Into The Wild", a company which produces extreme sports gear) to convince him to help her. Despite major reservations, Jack agrees to let Lisa test a new line of "novice" equipment, thus spurring the physical action in the book forward at a frantic, tumbling pace. The emotional build, however, grows much more slowly and steadily. Cautiously, in fact. Mostly because Jack is--okay, I'm just going to say it--such a guy. Yeah, he's sexy, and strong and protective. And when he gently cleans Lisa's scrapped palms after she falls off a huge cliff (her view) or rather slides down a steep hillside (his view), Jack melts hearts. But although he's physically brave enough to climb tall mountains and leap from speeding planes and has a great hero-sounding name to boot, whether Jack's emotionally brave enough to fall for such an unconventional heroine is another matter entirely. Because there's no doubt about it, Lisa has a wild mind. Her thoughts, revealed through first person narrative, are jumpy, surprising and LOUD! She consistently relates to the world via her favorite films (for example: "As Jack examines my scratches, I notice that he's not the brawny man-hero type at all. For one thing, he doesn't scowl all the time, making a big furrow down the center of his forehead, like Hugh Jackman does when he's Wolverine") and she persistently acts before she thinks. If you're seeking a polite, restrained, traditional romance, or--because of the completely misleading title--a rough, sexual romp, seek elsewhere. If you're looking for a book that will make you laugh, think, feel and cringe (mightily at times), snatch this one up. A definite wild ride of a story from beginning to end.

Every once in a while there comes a book that grabs you from the first sentence and doesn't let go...until long after you've read it. A book that begs you to read it all in one sitting. A book, that at times, is so real - you wish you could jump into the story and live it. A book that you know you'll read several times. One that has found its place among your favorites. This is that book. She Likes it Rough is written in first-person, a common perspective lately in ChickLit books. Honestly, I've had my fill of that perspective. Not because it's overdone or it's the new fad. I'm over it because I don't feel like you get the whole story. You don't get everyone's thoughts, their feelings, their deepest darkest secrets. You get one point of view. One. And that doesn't usually work for me because I'm nebby. I want to know what everyone is thinking, what they're feeling, what their deepest darkest secrets are. I want to know what makes the love interest tick. I want to know the whole shebang. By page two, I didn't even notice I was reading a first-person perspective. The author does a fantastic job of showing the reader everything they want to see. I could feel Jack's frustration with Lisa. I could feel his passion. I could feel his humor. I understood why he was the way he was. It was amazing. Another thing I loved about the book? Lisa's voice. She's scatterbrained, she goes off on tangents, she's not afraid (despite what she thinks) of showing her fear, she questions herself. She's so real. I love that. I love that I could relate to her. She's funny, she has a heart of gold, people adore her, she loves animals, and yet she has no idea of her worth. So many women, I'm sure, can relate to that. We're so busy pleasing everyone else that we forget our own worth. And I love that by the end of the book, she realized it and stood up for herself. She took a stand, drew that line in the sand, and she refused to deviate from it. And Jack. Oh Jack. He's flawed, he's gorgeous, he has cobalt blue eyes, he's a man, he has principles, he has a sense of humor, and he likes animals. He's practically perfect and a definite contestant for Book Boyfriend...hell, Book HUSBAND. There is so much to him, yet you feel like you know him so well. This book has it all. Love, Romance, Family Drama, Friendships...and Humor. Lots and lots of humor. I laughed so hard at times, I had tears running down my face! It's definitely a good idea to have a couple of tissues on hand while reading, not just for the laughing tears, but also in case of sad or romantic tears. You won't be disappointed if you buy this one. You won't be able to put it down once you start reading it. And after you're done reading it, you'll want to read it again...and again...and again. Two thumbs, way up, GVR Corcillo!

I, personally, really liked this book. I did find Lisa annoying at first, but all of us, at one time or another are annoying and whiny. She pulled it together in the end and became her own person. I thought the book was well written. I also thought the ending was wonderful. It brought tears to my eyes. I felt that Jack and Lisa were real people, not the oh-so-perfect couple you find in most romantic comedies. I do wish the author had dealt with Lisa's relationship with her parents and sister. I found that a little disappointing. However, I will definitely read other books by this author.

Standout comedy!

You all have to know how much I totally heart both the books and personality of this author, whose work is always incredibly beautiful and yet full of energy, twists and over the top comedy (see previous posts on Geralyn here ), and so I am gutted I never got to this before, a book about Lisa Flyte, possibly one of my most stand-outish, brilliantly done characters ever. Lisa, on waking up as a millionaire from a coma after a drive thru nearly crushed her car (which the media had a field day with), decides things have to change- sheโ€™s been afraid of life for too long and wants to woman up. And how better to help her than Jack Hawkins, an adrenaline junkie who scales mountains and scuba dives in his sleep. I loved the way the two of them met, and loved Jackโ€™s indifferent attitude to everything and bemusement at her and her constant references to film, which at times were so spot on I almost jumped about! When he asks Lisa to help test adventure gear for beginners and we get in depth look at various equipment and techniques, I literally hung on every-single-word. The comedy was top notch, as were the smile out loud moments and wonderful, wonderful romance, that wasnโ€™t always obvious but that made you suddenly put a hand to your heart and inhale. A special moment for her awful family who were like something out of a Roald Dahl novel! All in all just such a special book and again, one that is ridiculously highly recommended! Rating: 5/5

A very entertaining read.

This is the story of Lisa and Jack. After a freak accident which involved a burger joints roof collapsing on her car, Lisa decides she needs to start enjoying her life... Intro... Jack. Jack lives life to the fullest. He hikes and jumps out of planes and Lisa wants to be just like him so they make a deal. He will teach her to be brave and she will test his adventures equipment for beginners. While they battle through family problems and Lisa's unwanted fame, this leads to a number of hilarious moments that leave you wanting to cheer for Lisa and often wanting to punch Jack. The book is very well written and the characters are totally believable. They are in no way perfect and at times you want to scream at Lisa, telling Jack isn't good enough. Despite his flaws he pulls through in the end bringing their romance to a very satisfying conclusion. Which I am extremely happy about since I only like happy endings. While I think the climax to the book could have done with a little more explanation as to how Jack arranged it all it is still a very good story that will make you laugh and leave you happy. (The big foot bit is now permanently etched in my memory and still makes me giggle) All in all its a very good book and well deserving of a read

Worth pushing through

I honestly almost didn't finish this book, in the first few chapters I found the story progressed a bit slow and I found the MC to be a little annoying with her my life is awful attitude. However I decided to go one more chapter before giving up altogether and I'm glad I did,the pace picks up and the MC finds a backbone. The plot twist is pretty unexpected and the ending is satisfying.

This is a fun book. Lisa is completely bonkers and Jack is all rough and outdoorsy. It's a book about pushing yourself and overcoming your fears. I dithered about the number of stars because a few bits were a bit too convenient (like the number of times she managed to be naked!) and Jack got a bit annoying at times. But the thing that swung it for me was the author's voice. This lady can write. The narrative is deeply embedded in Lisa's point of view, but you can tell how Jack is feeling from what Lisa observes. That takes some skill to pull off. As far as I can tell, this is Geralyn Corcillo's first book. I'm looking forward to the next one.

An Enjoyable Read

Lisa Flyte finds she's a millionaire after waking up from an accident. With a fiance who cannot get away from her bedside quick enough, and a family most people would cut ties with, Lisa knows money can't buy happiness. She decides to do something worthwhile with her life and money. She begins by seeking the help of Jack Hawkins, determined to face her fears and become brave with his help. Before long she's not only falling from planes, but for Jack also. This is a fun read with plenty of laugh out loud moments. You can't help but pray Lisa gets her happy ending. Well done Ms Corcillo!
