“I wanted to leave you on a rather nice note,” a male French voice coos in your ear. “So I brought up some wine...I mean, how can a French guy get off without some wine…”
This is the first couple minutes of the track “French Goodbye.” The 10-minute recording features the soft voice of a French man (or at least, a man putting on a French accent) as he fingers his lover — the listener — one last time before he boards a plane to Paris the next morning.
“French Goodbye” is just one of many stories on the audio erotica platform Quinn . The site, which launched this month after a beta period, was founded by 22-year-old Caroline Spiegel, sister of Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel.
As I soon learned, accented voices — French, English, Australian — are extremely popular on Quinn, according to Spiegel. “Our most popular tag is ‘lesbian,’ which is the same thing with visual porn,” she told me when I visited Quinn’s office, a loft by the Williamsburg Bridge.
“We have over 150 tags, so there's a lot to choose from,” Spiegel continued. Other popular topics include Daddy Dom/Little Girl (a consensual, non-incestuous dom/sub pairing) and BDSM in general. The most popular track is “Harry Eats You Out,” which is Spiegel’s personal favorite, too.
Audio erotica is having a bit of a moment. While subreddits like r/gonewildaudio and the popular site Literotica have been around for years, it’s only recently that audio porn has started to get the same Silicon Valley treatment as non-erotic podcasts. The app Dipsea , a startup that offers paid subscriptions for audio erotic stories made in-house, raised $5.5 million earlier this year .
This makes sense given the audio boom we’re currently experiencing in general, with podcast listenership soaring and investors pouring money into the industry to keep up with it. In February, for example, Spotify bought podcast networks Gimlet and Anchor for $340 million . Just this week, the streaming giant released a new Your Daily Podcast playlist , which shows they’re doubling down on their interest in podcasts.
While Quinn and its peers have incredible timing, it’s clear that they are not merely “sexy podcasts.” In fact, Spiegel pushed back when WIRED called Quinn the “Spotify for audio porn.” “We get that comparison all the time,” she told WIRED. “But we’re obviously really different.”
Quinn was born out of a sexual discovery period Spiegel had following her recovery from an eating disorder. Visual porn did not appeal to her, so she found audio porn on Reddit and Literotica. “I was blown away,” she said, “I’m a huge fan of all these audio porn creators.”
The issues with mainstream porn have been discussed ad nauseam , and there are few places people can go for accessible, more ethical content. Feminist, ethical porn absolutely exists , but some, like Spiegel herself, may not get off on visual porn at all — or just prefer something different. This is where audio erotica comes in. It’s sexy, ethical (in Quinn and Dipsea’s case, at least), and leaves more room for fantasy than visual porn. Audio porn, according to Spiegel, is a “kind of a contrarian take. Everyone's like, ‘oh, the more graphic the better,’ but actually, I think human desire is more complex than that.”
Given the old adage that “men are visual creatures,” there may be an assumption that only women would want audio porn; Spiegel and her team soon realized that was not the case. The beta version was geared towards women, but now that it's fully launched, they intend to keep all genders in mind. The breakdown of users is approximately 50/50 men and women, and the site is actively seeking creators in categories they lacked in beta, such as queer stories.
What separates Quinn from other sources is that it consolidates the audio porn listening experience. Creators “tape together their experience,” as Spiegel put it. “They're linking to Soundgasm and then they’re linking to their Patreon and people are going all over the place.” Quinn streamlines this — and it was made not only to play audio, but to play audio porn. Creators, then, have a place to call their own.
It’s the creators that separate Quinn from Dipsea, as well. Dipsea releases three stories weekly itself; they work with writers and voice actors. Quinn, however, only hosts content made by creators. At the time of publication, Dipsea is an app-only experience while Quinn is a website — but Spiegel said that will soon change. “There is an app in the works,” she said. “We're probably going to face some issues with the App Store.”
Spiegel was referring to an ongoing battle that Quinn, and many other porn host sites and creators themselves, have experienced especially since the passing of sex-trafficking legislation FOSTA-SESTA . Just one day after Quinn’s launch, Spiegel tweeted that Instagram took down Quinn’s account (it has since been restored ). Earlier this month, PayPal announced they would no longer support Pornhub payments — just the latest in an ongoing list of payment services and social media platforms that are hostile towards sex workers.
Given the struggles of providing a space for porn creators while navigating FOSTA-SESTA, Spiegel emphasized that she and her team want to make it work with companies such as Instagram. “We're not taking to the streets right away and having our users write into these companies,” she said. “We’d love to just hash it out with them and be super flexible and work it out.”
Spiegel continued, “We understand the complexities of the porn industry the best we can, and why it's a difficult industry to support. And we’re trying to distinguish ourselves from the mass.”
All content on Quinn is free, but they’ve made it part of their mission for creators to be compensated fairly. Conversely, Quinn is also ad-free (for now) and users can compensate creators by giving fan tips. While Spiegel did not reveal much about how they plan to make money, she did say there may be some surprises in store for users in the upcoming year — surprises that Spiegel implied users would be excited to pay for.
With its cutesy wink logo and emphasis on providing pleasure — at one point, women’s pleasure specifically — one may assume that the site is riding the wellness and self-care trends. “Sometimes we get bucketed into this sort of wellness movement, and this sort of self care movement,” Spiegel said.
She was quick to debunk this line of thinking, however. “I just like to make it clear that we're not something that you have to work into your routine to make yourself healthier, like boost your metabolism, or whatever.”
According to Spiegel, Quinn’s goal is to support creators and build a community — and to hopefully make audio porn more mainstream. That and to provide an enjoyable, ethical space for both porn creators and listeners. As she said, “We’re more about having fun and feeling good.”

CFRA Research media and entertainment analyst Tuna Amobi reacts to Netflix missing its growth forecast.
The "audio porn" app created by the sister of Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel is gaining traction as it recently surpassed 300,000 subscribers.
Quinn, which offers erotic content geared toward women, was founded in 2019 by 24-year-old Caroline Spiegel. It was created to give women an alternative to the standard, visually-dominated porn that is normally consumed by men, she said.
Like Peloton, the app invites users to create their own content and submit 10-minute fantasy-based audios that are "like the kind of good sex people want" and which are "designed to make you orgasm," Spiegel told The Information (paywall) .

Some creators can earn as much as $5,000 per month by submitting stories which users can access for $2.99 per month. Creators also have a landing page similar to that provided by Spotify so that listeners develop loyalty to particular contributors.
Spiegel and her staff curate the audio submissions from creators. While the creators have autonomy over the final product, they are not permitted to violate company rules banning anything that promotes nonconsensual sex or rape, incest, sex with minors, or zoophilia.

The app’s popularity has earned it more than 100,000 followers on TikTok as well as a specially-branded podcast that focuses on issues like body image, dating, and women’s rights.
Spiegel said that the app seeks to transcend conventional feminism.
"It’s more about how I think it’s empowering to be turned on by content that is made ethically and is genuinely very hot," she said.
"It’s not watered down. It’s not what people think women want. It’s made directly in response to what women want — and that is something new."
Spiegel said that she came up with the concept of Quinn after she was forced to leave Stanford University during her junior year due to an eating disorder .
Her bout with anorexia also led to sexual dysfunction, which can be a taboo subject when it affects women.
Evan Spiegel — whose net worth is valued at $6.5 billion — has not invested in Quinn, according to his sister.Sipa USA via AP (AP Newsroom)
The stigma surrounding sexual dysfunction and female masturbation inspired her to strive to create a platform where women can feel comfortable in pursuing sexual pleasure on their own.
Spiegel’s company is close to a Series A financing round. She said her older brother, Evan, 31, whose net worth is pegged by Forbes at $6.5 billion, has not played a major role in building her company.
"He’s more of a friend and a brother and a family member than he is a business partner," she said of Evan Spiegel.
"He’s definitely a mentor in my life, but he didn’t invest in Quinn. He’s very supportive and often gives me advice, but I don’t think he’s particularly involved more than any other member of my family.’
Evan Spiegel told The Information: "Caroline embodies an entrepreneurial spirit and I’m really proud of her."

Let’s address the elephant in the room: Sometimes, mainstream video porn can be uncomfortable, or even disturbing for women. And when you're in the mood, using that valuable brain power to read erotica just can feel like it requires too much energy.
If traditional visual porn and written erotica had a lovechild, it would be audio erotica. It has the narrative fantasies of smut and the sensory experience of produced porn, but minus the visuals. Audio erotica can be anything from smut audiobooks, guided masturbation, pont-of-view fantasies, or just straight-up sex noises.
As a film school brat , I’m very picky when it comes to the visual porn I consume. I don’t like when the lighting is bad, or when I notice a boom mic or stray wire hanging out in the back of the frame. But it’s not just the aesthetics that upset me. It’s the fact that some of the most powerful figures in the porn industry are men . And as a result, a lot of the free porn on the internet is shot and created through the male gaze (not to mention there's a concerning link between pornography and sex trafficking ). While sites like Bellesa , a female-run and curated porn website, offer free consumption of ethical porn, I still get sensory overload when it comes to watching porn. Where’s the mystery? The romance? The fantasy ? When it comes to visual porn, there’s nothing left to the imagination.
Needless to say that when I came across audio erotica, I instantly felt the need to try it out. What, you mean I can get the auditory sensations of video porn along with the rampant imagination of my favorite Wattpad smut ? Say less.
After researching some great places to listen to audio porn, I decided to try out the up-and-coming, self-described “ Forbidden Spotify ” app, Quinn . In 2019, then 22-year old college senior Caroline Spiegel decided to try her hand in ethical porn — but with a twist. Instead of the traditional library of visual porn, Quinn features strictly audio erotica: sexy stories, point of views, role plays… everything you can find on a site like Bellesa, but minus the video aspect. Best of all? Quinn’s team is also composed entirely of women.
So, the last time I felt the urge to give myself a ‘lil love, I decided to give audio erotica a shot. Here’s what I learned.
In this day and age, free porn is all over the internet. And that includes audio erotica. But Quinn is different: while downloading the app itself is free, after a week-long free trial, you’ll have to shell out $4.99/month for exclusive access to Quinn’s entire audio library.
And if you’re anything like me and still living on your parents' AppleID, those purchases can easily show up on your parents' subscription records (talk about awkward). So, I finally girlbossed and grew up: I created my very own AppleID and linked my PayPal in case I wanted to continue with Quinn after my free trial (which I marked the ending of in my calendar: pro tip).
While I was apprehensive about the price at first, I soon realized that the unlimited library is vast. Quinn doesn’t skimp on content. You’ll have access to porn that caters to all the kinks you could possibly imagine: voyeurism, daddy (mommy, too), phone sex, rough POV, BSDM, “butt-stuff…” really anything you can think of.
Not only does paying for porn open the door to more content, but it also helps the people in the sex work industry to get paid fairly. The money you give to Quinn will be given to the creators that record content for the app along with helping to fund the small, all-women team behind it. And, if you think about it, $4.99 is just one less Starbucks drink a month.
After downloading the app, I took a deeper dive into the category page and found content for almost every (ethical) kink I could think of. They had different paces of porn (gentle, passionate, rough), a variety of fantasy scenarios (boyfriend/girlfriend, vacation, friends to lovers, overheard sex), and even a wide range of kink-centric files to let those fantasies fly (DDLG, BDSM, dirty talk, strong language, praise).
Not only are there a ton of great, kinky categories on Quinn, there’s also a ton of options within these categories for your listening pleasure. Under each category, I found a well of audio files to try out. None of that one-video-per-category B.S that’s all too common on porn sites — on Quinn, I could potentially listen to kink-centric content for weeks.
Without the visual aspect, getting into audio porn can feel a little different. I was a bit rusty at getting into the mood by using the visual part of my imagination. Especially with it being months since I had had sex, I found it quite hard to visualize a situation in that way. It was like reading a book without pictures, except the book was porn.
Regardless, once I was able to dive into my once-neglected sexual imagination, I really understood the appeal of audio porn. I could place myself in specific places and scenarios (and even with specific people *wink*). It made some of my sexual fantasies come to life in a way that couldn’t be achieved with watching two random actors in some weird Airbnb on a screen. Instead of thinking about the physical act of sex, I found myself fantasizing about my desires and the way those desires made me feel. It felt liberating, validating, and really, really great.
As someone who was raised Catholic, masturbating wasn’t exactly encouraged in my household. While I’ve grown more comfortable expressing and acting on my sexuality (I mean, I’m literally writing about my masturbation journey right now), even masturbating can feel shameful and uncomfortable, especially to visual porn. But I’m not alone in this: A 2021 study with Volonté and Dr. Ian Kerner — the creator of Coral , an app designed to teach people how to have better sex — found that in comparison to the 25% of men who reported masturbating daily, only 8.7% of women engaged in daily masturbation. Furthermore, only 24% of women said they masturbated two to three times daily, versus 35% of men. Women shouldn't have to feel weird about masturbating or learning how to make themselves feel good, and Quinn knows that.
Quinn even had a category dedicated to guided masturbation. In these audio files, I could choose a voice that told me exactly what to do, and how to do it. And while this could totally be a submissive kink, I felt myself learning more about my body and what it enjoys in terms of sex and touch. It gave me a chance to explore my body in a more intimate way that I never had
