How to get from Athens to Pylos: 4 Ways to Paradise

We continue to crawl our way around the south-western Peloponnese at the rate of miles per day. Now huddled cozily inside Ernie on a cold morning, drinking tea, playing Scrabble and watching a cat belonging to our German neighbours, which is sat on the dining table in their awning licking its bum. At Finikounda there is a lovely campsite backing onto the long, sandy beach, as it was a dull day we decided to stay for a night to top up our batteries and do some laundry washing. The site is a temporary home to an assortment of long-term residents, mostly retired, predominantly German with some British, one or two Dutch and French. Their site, Bessy on the Move makes interesting reading as they have visited and documented trips to various locations on our itinerary and they had some useful advice on taking a motorhome into Turkey. Tempting though it was to stay for longer we have an appointment in Athens on 20 January to have our new shock absorbers fitted, which have finally arrived from Italy — I think they came by gondola. We then need to point Ernie towards Salonika Thessaloniki from where I fly back to blighty for a few days at the end of January. The return flight from Salonika to London Stansted cost a grand total of — get this — 38 Euros! About thirty quid. I have to travel via London in order to have my dabs taken at the Russian consulate, as part of the visa application process. If all goes to plan, Jude will enjoy the same palaver when she next flies home in late March. Next stop was two nights spent at the port at Pylos , better known as Navarino. In the town square there is an impressive trilateral monument to the British, French and Russian fleets who fought a decisive naval battle here in during the Greek War of Independence, sinking the Turkish fleet and defending the fledgling Greek Republic. The Battle of Navarino. Much to his dismay, Eric has had a haircut. Unfortunately due to his tail which curls around like a Cumberland sausage, when the fur on his back is short his tail taps his back constantly. This bothers him when out walking as he thinks he is being followed and will suddenly turn around to look at what is behind him. When he has had enough he tries to get one of us to carry him, jumping up into our arms like Scooby Doo. Poor lad is tormented by his own tail, we will have to leave his back fur longer next time in a sort of canine-mohican style. At Voidokilia there is a beautiful sandy beach, the tide channelled in through a small inlet around a crescent shaped bay. My knowledge of Greek mythology is sketchy to say the least but apparently this is supposed to be the place where Hermes hid cattle that were stolen from Apollo. Yesterday we drove inland to Karytaina, and parked overnight at the edge of this picturesque mountain village, from here we are going to explore the area around Lousios Gorge and one of the highlights of this part of the world, ancient Olympia. Public tap at Karytaina complete with mid-January nativity scene. Progress — peaceful coexistence in the double dog bed. We take torches when we go round Methoni castle so you can go in the underground bits…. Take care- yours in envy….. Hi Maggie, it would be fascinating to visit at different times of year, we are both loving Greece and it is so tempting to stay here through spring and see all the changes. So glad you are having such a wonderful time!! Missing you both on FB. Hugs to Cleo and Eric. Thanks for sharing your adventure!! Take care, Shaun and Jude. Finikounda Beach. Methoni Castle.
