Written by Johnny Quid Living loud doesn’t mean screaming at the top of your lungs all the time. It doesn’t mean creating havoc wherever you go, wrecking whatever finds itself in your path. Living loud is not nihilism. Neither is it narcissism. Living loud sometimes means you need to go quiet. Getting the max out of life also requires you to know yourself. To know what makes you happy, what makes you sad. To realise how you impact others. And to be able to manage all of that in a responsible way. Living loud means you are able to embrace the silence. In the latest Live Loud-podcast with icon DJ B-Front, we asked him about the craziest thing he experienced in ten years performing on Decibel. We expected an answer somewhat in the vicinity of crazy after parties, a crowd going completely bonkers or stuff not suited for daytime television. None of these came close to the answer Bob gave us. “The craziest thing I ever experienced on Decibel”, said B-Front, “was having a panic attack on stage.” And he wasn’t joking. It wasn’t as a matter of speaking. No. B-Front experienced a genuine, authentic panic attack while on one of the biggest stages in his career. “I already felt it coming up just before I entered the stage”, he said. “It felt really hot. I had no idea what happened to me. I just wanted to get away and leave everything behind.” But he didn’t. “What I did, was focus on the track list I prepared”, Bob continued. “Just go from one track to the next. Just concentrate on the next thing to do and keep it rolling.” “I don’t remember a lot else about that specific show. Afterwards people said it was an amazing show.” B-Front said. “I had no idea what happened to me.” This vulnerable side B-Front is showing here, is also very much a part of living loud, of getting the max out of life. If you push the pedal down all the time, going through life at 200 mph, there’s no nuance, there’s no texture, there’s no contrast. At a certain point, a crash is inevitable. In the LIVE LOUD-podcast Bob also talks about coping with corona and using mindfulness to feel happy again. Balancing out your mental state, living healthy and finding your happy place is all very much a part of that LIVE LOUD lifestyle. Every kick is only a kick because there’s no kick just before. A drop in a song only feels climactic because of the silence and the build up that introduces it. Living loud is all about knowing how to balance that contrast. How to live in the silence, knowing when to get loud again. And good news for all of us, is that as of this moment Decibel 2021 is still very much on the calendar. After all these months of silence, the loudest city on earth will open its gates again this August, for as far as we can tell right now. Even better news, B-Front will be performing on Decibel as well. Enough of this era of C-Silence, it’s time to get loud again!

Written by Johnny Quid There are many ways a person can catch the Vinyl Virus and start collecting vinyl records. But there aren’t many better ways than how DJ Ruthless did it. He literally caught a vinyl. During one of the famous hardcore parties in the Energiehallen in Rotterdam DJ The Prophet threw a couple of white label records into the audience. DJ Ruthless, being over 6 feet tall, happened to catch one of those records. With which he also caught the Vinyl Virus. We’re talking about DJ Ruthless here. One of the pioneers of the scene. A man that lives loud in all possible ways. So when he starts collecting vinyl, he goes hard. In the Live Loud Podcast, episode 3, we talked with Ruud about his time when he worked for a hardcore record label in Maassluis. In the hall, filled to the brink with records, he had a SL1200 turntable where he could play vinyl all day. What an awesome way to fill yourself up with beats, tracks and themes while at work. It formed DJ Ruthless and his vision on Hardcore and Hardstyle. As a young fan he saw Hardcore, or gabber as it was known in the nineties, rise and fall. As one of the producers of Jekyll & Hyde he saw Jumpstyle come and go. But DJ Ruthless stayed. And grew, within the scene, with his own unique style, always pushing the boundaries. And then Pussy lounge happened. Inflatable bananas and broken backs Pussy lounge and DJ Ruthless, that’s a match made in heaven. “It’s the crazyness on stage”, Ruud said in the Live Loud Podcast, episode three. “Everything goes. That’s how it’s supposed to be, also with our music. Not giving a fuck, everything is allowed at Pussy Lounge.” No longer bound by a genre, no longer dealing with discussions about credibility and the rules of the game, Pussy lounge liberated DJ Ruthless and vice versa. They helped each other to live loud and get the max out of life. “DJ Darkraver and me, we said yes to everything on the Pussy lounge stage”, Ruud goes on. “Which is why we jumped into the audience on an inflatable banana, for instance. Or played and stage dived in Sumo-costumes. Or drunk, with three, four DJ’s at the same time and some dancers on the turntables. I think I almost broke my back a couple of times, jumping into the audience. Things go crazy fast at Pussy lounge.” Twenty years DJ Ruthless at Decibel outdoor This year, there will be a very special performance of DJ Ruthless at Decibel outdoor, to commemorate all the craziness, all the stories and all the friends made along the way. It’s his twentieth year as DJ Ruthless. And where to celebrate better than at the Pussy lounge stage at Decibel. “It’s going to be a lot of fun”, Ruud said. “We’re preparing everything now. Some special acts will perform, it’s going to get crazy, off course. You’ll have to be there.” DJ Ruthless lived the scene, but also enriched the scene. He was there at the beginning, has seen everything and created his own area within the scene. We love icons like that, who know how to live loud.
