“Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat” is a nursery rhyme from England.
It was first published in 1805 in the collection book “Songs for the Nurseries”, London.
It is unsure who the lyrics of this rhyme refer to, but most probably the queen mentioned in Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat is Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603). Some other sources believe the queen mentioned in the rhyme is Caroline of Brunswick (1768-1821), wife of King George IV.
This particular rhyme is a very loved one, as it is easy to memorize for children.

While there are numerous reasons people call their cats pussycats, the main cause remains “out of love.” Over the period, pussycat has become a word for cats.
The word originally originated in the sixteenth century. It relates its roots to the Dutch word “poes,” which is Dutch for “cat.” But why are cats called pussycats? To find that out, keep reading this article.
The word pussycat might have been a Dutch word, but many similar words were found in the Danish, German, Swedish, Irish, and Lithuanian dialects – ”puisin.”
Coming to “puss,” another variant used in the replicated form is “puss-puss.” The name puss-puss originally started as a call name for cats like many people today “here, kitty kitty.”
Are you wondering why “poes,” “puisin,” and “puss-puss” became “pussy”? Well, it is mainly because cats are lazy when it comes to reacting to their names. However, the double “ss” at the end of “pussy” creates a hissing sound, which attracts your little feline’s attention.
This is tried and tested, and if you go right now calling “hey, puss-puss, come here, puss-puss,” you will see them coming jumping towards you!
The word has been quite prevalent since the 17th century. Then, the term “pussycat” was used for a girl or a woman who is attractive, cunning, clever, and playful.
Some people say “pussycat” is a term for female cats, like “tomcat” is a term for male cats. However, this has been ruled out as a possibility because female cats are not referred to as “pussycats.”
Instead, they are called “Molly,” for a young cat, “Queen,” for a cat who has given birth to kittens, and “Dam,” for the old cats.
The word became a bad word for quite a while and was negatively used to categorize men. Around the 1940s, “pussycat” was used as a word of contempt to mean “an effeminate” or “a coward” man.
The word has also been used as slang in both negative and positive contexts over time.
However, the world’s most basic and popular context still remains a term for cats used by kids. Teachers in schools use the word “pussycat” to teach children about cats. Kids’ books also use the term “pussycat” for cats.
You might be wondering why cats would not recognize their names. However, it is not that simple. Yes, your cat understands that you’re calling their name, but they choose to ignore it or not to listen to it.
Therefore, we try to call them weird names to grab attention, like the hissing sound at the end of “pussy.”
Researchers have proved that cats do recognize their names, but they are not as efficient as dogs in showing if they did. So, your feline definitely heard you calling them, but do not come running to you like canines.
Cats are creatures with mysterious social behavior patterns, and you cannot argue otherwise if you are a pawrent. No matter how much you call out “hey, pussy-pussy” or “hey, kitty-kitty” or even their real names, you might notice an ear twitch or a head turn. But they will not budge from their positions most of the time.
Imagine calling your cat’s name for fifteen minutes straight, and there is no sign of them turning up, let alone coming to you. This might get a bit hard for you as a parent, as you will have to go to them and feed them. Cats are not very responsive. The question here arises how you can fix this.
Well, it depends. Sometimes it is used in a positive context and sometimes vice versa. The word “poes” originally means cats. Therefore, it is clear that it never really had all these foul contexts; we created them.
You calling your cat pussy is perfectly fine because that is how the term is supposed to be used.
So, why are cats called pussycats? To be honest, there is no apparent reason except to seek your little furry friend’s attention, as they tend to be misers in that case.
Cats are mysterious creatures, and the research on cats is much slimmer than research on dogs. Therefore, it is hard to understand their behavioral patterns.
However, if you feel your cat is acting out and is less responsive to its name, try calling them by “hey, pussycat,” “hey, pussy-pussy”, “hey puss-puss.” Since these names were created to grab the cats’ attention, it might make them more responsive.
