I write about sex a lot. I meet all sorts of interesting people with the kind of sexy hobbies that leave me equally confused and intrigued.
But of all the niche kinks I’ve seen, ‘human puppies’ have to be one of my favourites.
I first met up with real life pups at Sexpo in London. Olympia was filled with adult retailers and in the middle of it all was a group of men dressed in, well, not very much.
They all had on puppy masks – neoprene or leather, complete with ears and snouts. And they were very friendly – within minutes I was sitting on the floor surrounded by men dressed as dogs, bouncing and begging for treats.
When Channel 4 broadcast The Secret Life Of The Human Pups last year, the response was largely confusion mixed with disapproval. Viewers struggled to understand why someone would want to wear a latex suit and eat from a bowl on the floor.
But I found it fascinating – why shouldn’t people do what they want, so long as they’re not hurting anyone else? And most of the pups I’ve met have been very well trained!
‘I’ve been a human pup for three or four years. Being a pup isn’t always a kink or fetish (although it can go that way) – for me it helps my mental health.
‘I had a nasty separation from my partner of ten years – I went into a deep depression and had severe anxieties. Being Gus helped me to be more positive and able to confront people I wouldn’t have otherwise, as my anxieties would peak and I’d go slipping down into that spiral of depression again.
‘Closing my eyes, stripping away all external and human aspects and tapping into my ‘core animalistic’ nerve is when I feel at home and at peace – we call this as going into our ‘head space’.
‘Some use trigger words or putting on their pup hood/mask, but for me it’s being alone in a room, tapping into my core, where I find Gus. I bring him forward and let him be one with my body, my voice and eventually everything that’s around me.
‘My family aren’t aware of me being a pup although they are very much aware and that I’m gay and open with it. My friends and my work colleagues are aware and supportive.
‘As Ashley I usually wear my dog collar and tag around my neck – it’s an indication that I’m a human pup. All or most pups will have a form of collar.
‘The use of a padlock is to communicate that the individual is ‘owned’ and not to be played with without the owner’s permission. I have three keys to my padlock – one is with my boyfriend, one is with my Alpha and the other is with me in case I have to take off my collar for work reasons.’
Puppies need to shop for their outfits. I first met The Kinksters at last year’s Sexhibition .
‘It’s hard to define. We get people of all ages, but it’s mostly younger guys between 18 and 30. Pup play is certainly growing in popularity, we have more and more new customers looking to experiment.’
How did you get into the ‘pet’ market?
‘We have always been close to the pup community and we have some pups working in our team.’
To the outside observer, the pup look is almost always kink-influenced – does it invariably involve kink, or do some people simply like the ‘acting’?
‘Pup play is what YOU make of it. A lot of pups we know got into pup play to help overcome anxiety and social discomfort. They just want to play with their ball and cause mischief, like a real pup.
‘If they enjoy the sexual element, there’s nothing wrong with that. We all have preferences, and as long as nobody is being hurt, we say go for it!
‘Each pup has their own “pawsinality” from bouncy and playful, to shy and quiet, and even some aggressive puppies! Each individual pup uses puppy play for their own reason, and that should be respected by other members in the community.’
You run a club night – are such events becoming more popular?
‘They certainly are! Our all male KINK event started in 2014. We welcome guys from up and down the country (some even fly in). We have a dedicated pup play room full of toys and cushions. We even include bubbles which can really confuse some of the poor puppies!’
Zentai Spot has become something of a media star of late, since his appearance in the Channel 4 documentary The Secret Life Of The Human Pups. He was the inaugural Mr Pup UK .
Spot and I have history – I was once encouraged to zap his electric collar when he was on a trade stand at an adult expo. I felt a bit guilty, but he didn’t seem to mind.
‘My life as a pup started well over 10 years ago with my ex-fiancée. One thing which felt right was wearing a collar and we bought a cheap orange collar and lead set. I couldn’t wait to get home with it and try it on. It felt wonderful.
‘Another thing that probably led to becoming a pup was my love of skin tight clothing. My fiancee didn’t understand the appeal, but was able to relate it to ‘fancy dress’ and allowed me to buy a Dalmatian print Zentai suit.
‘When I put it on the feelings from my orange collar came back and I ended up buying more and more – different collars, puppy bone name tags, leads, puppy toys and bowls. Eventually I bought a cage, big enough for me to sleep in.
‘In 2008 I went out [as a pup] for the first time in public. I finally realised it was an actual kink – I went to a club after I was asked in public if I was a puppy. I also around this time started my blog .
‘Eventually my fiancee and I parted company and I put out a ‘lonely hearts’ type ad. I was ‘adopted’ by a new owner who encouraged me to the point that I was eating the same dinner as their bio-dog – chicken and rice.
‘I was going out for walks around their grounds and spent a lot of time sleeping in my puppy cage there. That didn’t last long due to the long distance and so I ended up with my current owner/handler. We are now very close friends and housemates (and sometimes more).
‘My love of being a puppy is that ‘everyone loves a puppy’. Just look at how people react to a biological puppy – their hearts melt. I love the affection that you get from people. You can just focus on the simple life of squeaky toys and tummy rubs.
‘You switch off from the outside world, clear your mind and have fun. Being put to bed in a puppy cage is my safe home – it’s not used as punishment, it’s where puppy feels safe.
‘Friends and family were accepting of it from early on, because I’d forget to take off my puppy collar and was just honest about it. I was lucky in that sense – I didn’t have to hide it. It allowed me to be happy.
‘Since being on TV I have been fortunate that negativity has been minor. The positive aspects have been huge – it’s more accepted by the general public and more people are admitting to being a human pup.
‘I often get approached by these ‘newborn’ pups for guidance and advice.
‘We’re not out to cause any trouble, we just want love and attention in the same way you give a bio-pup love and fusses. We all have our own reasons why we want to be a pup, but ultimately, it’s the love you get from everyone around you.
‘It’s a magic feeling and one you can never get tired of.’
