Aquaponics is a sustainable fish and vegetable production system that combines traditional aquaculture aquatic animal husbandry with hydroponics growing plants without soil in the water in an integrated environment. The fish waste provides organic food for growing plants, while the plants naturally filter the water that the fish live in. Our Aquaponics system averages 30 pounds of fresh vegetables weekly spearmint, basil, lettuce, mint and every 3 months a tilapia harvest of pounds. When founders Ted Kheel and Frank Rainieri started Grupo Puntacana more than 50 years ago, they encouraged their workers to raise bees and produce honey to generate additional income. Beginning in , the Foundation has led an innovative worm composting project to convert organic waste from the resort's kitchens and gardens into worm hummus. The project uses a species of earthworm that consumes its own weight in organic waste every day, turning the material into highly productive black soil. The Foundation works with the resort's kitchens to turn tons of food waste into compost for landscaping, golf course maintenance, and vegetable production. History Staff Contact Partnership.
