Where the condemned found themselves trapped in a metal cage, hanging in chains for all to see. This grotesque spectacle, meant to deter and horrify, is known as gibbeting. An ancient form of public execution and punishment, gibbeting is one such method that casts its own haunting shadow throughout history.
At one point, being placed in a metal cage alive to die of thirst was used as a method of punishment, but most often, a criminal was already dead when placed in the cage or hung by chains. Some of the bodies were left on display until their clothes rotted.
