Excellent book on how to start playing guitar for the novice

I rarely write reviews but, you need to know how valuable this book is. In summary, I wish I had bought it sooner. When I took lessons years ago, I was taught some of the exercises (spiders, etc), but, I didn't know there was a book that collected all of them. Look, classic/finger-style guitar playing is a challenge largely because of the technical problems that the student has to overcome. Technical issues include: holding the guitar correctly, developing finger independence, striking the strings accurately, developing muscle-memory, making a "clean tone" and on and on. Adding to the technical burden is the fact that the classic guitar is an instrument with limited dynamic range! Take it from someone who has purchased a lot of guitar books (methods, etc), most of which are in storage: If you are serious about fixing your technical issues I HIGHLY recommend you purchase this book. I started doing the exercises about two weeks ago. Since then. my left-hand finger independence has improved dramatically! For a long time I have felt that my guitar playing had plateaued. Working with this book has moved my progress forward again. I liken the exercises in this book to a boxer "jumping rope" or hitting the "speed bag". They are challenging exercises and you'll need to GO SLOW at first to make sure you are doing them properly, but, you will notice the improvement in your playing very quickly. One last thing, a bit of preventative medicine: I've found that "unlearning" poor habits is more difficult than "learning" correctly the first time. I have also known a couple of guitar players who have hurt finger muscles because of poor technique. If you do the exercises in this book you will PREVENT both of these things from happening. With Respect, A Fellow Traveler

I like the book and the approach. Many complain that this is not a tutorial or complete method but that's not the need this book attempts to fill. The focus of Pumping Nylon is to "solve various technical problems." There are a million downloads or websites where you can get scales and right-hand technique instruction on using p-i-m-a and variations on the theme. Pumping Nylon focuses on the less common, more complex or difficult right-hand patterns crossing one or more strings, arpeggios, more complex speed studies and great sight-reading practice. The book is good but I found the DVD to be worthless. The volume is so low that, for most of it, I could not hear it with my face inches from the speakers on my PC and the DVD player and PC volumes maxed out. Maybe it would be better on a TV or external, amplified, PC speakers. Besides not being able to hear most of it, the content was not of much value anyway. 2 hours of DVD going over very rudimentary things such as nails, posture, holding the guitar, etc. with very little actual playing or practice instruction. I think the book is great but I recommend skipping the DVD version and saving 10 or 12 dollars by buying the original version.

I can definitely feel how these exercises will help me get finger independence. They are a challenge so be ready for these as they look much easier than actually played. Great Technican book for the fingers. I would definitely recommend.. Thanks for creating this book....

The supplied music is not for the beginner like me, but the excercises are useful to me and I can feel some improvement. Note on the spiral edition: the spiral has a wider spine with the title on it so folding it in half to have only a single page is not possible (wont be flat at all)! The audio is not quite useful and relatively short.

After a few years of not playing I figure I would give this book a shot to gain back flexibility and get my fretting hand back in shape. This book does not have tab, only sheet music. (I never learned to read music) I guess that is good as I was going to relearn guitar and learn to read music. So I guess this will sit on the shelf until I am able to read this material. Now with this being said, There are videos on YouTube with these exercises. So if one is a visual learner, this may be one avenue you might explore. Just search Pumping Nylon in youtube's search bar and you will find it. I am giving it 3 stars for not having Tabs, then at which time I am able to read music, I will re-asses my review.

This book is not the best choice for someone like me who is teaching himself and who has no background in music theory. The book does not explain anything about how to read music or where the notes are on the guitar. The book does, however, focus on technique. In this respect it is very good. The book also has excellent exercises for strengthening and positioning the hands. The pieces of music that are offered for practicing are, in my opinion, far too hard for a beginner. One the the strengths of this book is the CD and DVD that come with it. It is very helpful to be able to watch Scott - a real maestro - demonstrate technique. I will probably get more out of this book in a few years time when I become more proficient at playing. In conclusion, if you are a complete beginner, and you are learning on your own,I believe that you would profit more from Frederick Noad's "Solo Guitar Playing 1".

I like the book but there were no guitar tabs. The guitar tabs version came out years ago so why can't the latest version contain tabs as well. If we are talking about the loose-leaf version, the recycled paper was a bit too rough for me - too pulpy, feels like paperback paper. I am sure the paper is actually fine but it just don't feel as nice as non-recycled paper. Forget about recycling and come up with something that feel better please because this book was meant to be read hundreds of time. Save the recycled paper for a novel because most people don't read a novel more than once and few people read a novel 3 times.

Awesome product

If you really want to learn the guitar like a classical guitarist, not just strum a few cords, then this is the book. The video is a must to go with this book. The author uses an unconventional method of teaching guitar, but by jingles it works. Like everything else, dedicated practice is needed to achieve I would recommend this teaching manual, which takes from the right fingernails to playing a peace from Bach in no time. One thing to remember the DVD is authorised for ZONE1 USA only. This is important if you have a single Zone DVD palyer

Decent guide - odd that he seems to talk about ...

Decent guide - odd that he seems to talk about quite complicated stuff before starting on the basics - but I just ignore that for now
