Puerto Rico Declares State of Emergency Amid Surge in Dengue Fever Cases

San Juan, Puerto Rico – April 17, 2025

Puerto Rico’s government has declared a public health emergency following a sharp rise in dengue fever cases across the island. Health officials report over 1,500 confirmed infections this year, more than triple the number recorded in the same period last year.

Governor Pedro Pierluisi announced the emergency measure on Tuesday, allocating $10 million in emergency funds for mosquito control efforts and public awareness campaigns. 'We are taking swift action to protect our communities,' Pierluisi stated. 'Dengue is preventable, and we urge all residents to eliminate standing water and use repellent to avoid mosquito bites.'

The outbreak has strained local hospitals, particularly in densely populated areas like San Juan and Ponce. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has deployed a team to assist with surveillance and containment efforts.

Dengue, a mosquito-borne virus, causes high fever, severe headaches, and in rare cases, life-threatening complications. Experts attribute the surge to heavy rainfall and warmer temperatures, which have accelerated mosquito breeding.

Health Secretary Carlos Mellado advised residents to seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms and warned that cases could rise as the rainy season continues. Meanwhile, municipalities have intensified fumigation efforts in high-risk neighborhoods.

This marks Puerto Rico’s first dengue-related emergency since the 2012–2013 epidemic, which saw nearly 5,000 cases. Officials hope early intervention will curb the spread before peak transmission months.
