From there they would come down in small groups to cross into Mexico. In those days, many of the RVers made friends with each other and then over the next few years they would all plan their trips together. Now there is only Playa del Oro and Playa Bonita. In those days, once past the Mayan Palace area it was dirt road for many miles. Sometime it was smoother driving in the desert rather than struggling with the ruts. In some places the road had 4 lanes going each way. Before the new coastal highway from P. Calles which now leads to El Desemboque, Puerto Libertad, Punta Chueca and Kino Bay you could drive through the asparagus fields, snow pea fields and Thompson grape vineyards and buy a case of which ever you would like directly from the processing plant. Within that area there was and is so much agriculture grown including olives, pecans and citrus as well as cattle ranching. Back to the caravans. Many of the groups consist of 20 or more rigs, so getting through the border was not easy. Now a local Rocky Point businessman Russ Black organizer of the Mermaid Market has a program that will meet the caravan on United States side of the border and then they have a police escort to get everyone through Sonoyta in an orderly fashion. The weather is fantastic, the Sea of Cortez is warm, food is fresh and cheap, and gas is a lot less. I imagine all of these things factor in when snowbirds decide on a vacation spot and here in Rocky Point we have it all. Plus lots of activities, places to explore, and plenty of peace and quiet as well. Grab a beachfront spot for your rig and enjoy the beach and our gorgeous sunsets. Now why in the world would you want to go anywhere else? Just a few years back the beaches were one RV park after another, but unfortunately most have given way to high rise condos or the plan to build on the land. And both have a restaurant and bar on premises. RVers make reservations well in advance as they return to our fine city year after year, but they most likely still have room for your rig. As far as travel goes, all roads leading to Rocky Point are in condition for large and small motorhomes whether or not you are pulling a trailer or vehicle. From someone who has driven the highways for many years — and in consideration of other travelers, it would be great if you could leave some room between RVs when caravanning so that those wanting to pass can do so with care. Also, since there is now a check-point on the U. If you can leave just a little room it would make it a lot easier for those who want to get across. Traffic becomes backed up along Hwy 85 near the border and if travelers do not leave room, there is no way to get across the highway. Same goes for those exiting the Lukeville strip mall heading north. Some will want to get into the line going south — and I am one who hates cutters too — but if we all could just let them in it would keep the line moving and frustration to a minimum.
